This is sexy site, but is it really at the elegant edge. I adore the sensual feel of custom-made corsets, and wear them regularly -- as do many other French women who don't care to admit it.

Don't Americans like corsets? Every American fille  I know from Le Crazy Horse or Le Moulin Rouge loves them. Is the difference cultural. In Fance, you know, we have them custom made in silk and satin!

Please explain to this corset-loving Parisian!

My best guest would be cultural. Corsets give a different silhouette to the body, and it would seem unusual in many professions to be wearing a corset under clothing.  Also, many Americans do not know how to wear a corset as they were worn historically.  They do not understand that you need to wear a chemise or other layer under your corset, to protect it from dirt and body oils.  Do the french wear them that way as well, or do they wear them next to the skin??

This fille Americaine enjoys wearing corsets, but doesn't get the opportunity very often anymore.

Zut alors!

With the large number of custom corsetieres in the US, your question seems somewhat ill conceived.

Being of French heritage and raised by my great grandmother.... I've had a corset since I was about 13. Various corsets for dress, and play. I still have my original training corset and wear it frequently.

I wear a corset or waist cincher at least three times a week for 5+ hours or more, and I do wear them under clothing, out into the public. A waist cincher gives you a great hourglass figure with a pencil skirt and a nice tight sweater!

I'm American and I adore my corsets.  My family is involved with historical costuming and I've been wearing various corsets (usually Victorian style, though sometimes Elizabethan and Georgian), since I was 12.  We usually make our own.  Some are silk, satin or brocade, while others are more "underwear" and are simply made of sturdy cotton coteille (sp?).  If I didn't have to do so much movement with the class I teach (4th graders) I would likely wear one everyday.

i am new to corsets and love those i own; however, as i'm single i find lacing them by myself quite difficult.  Does A/anyone have suggestions as to how this task can be made easier?

I am in Canada  and have several but do not wear regularily simply because the corset is too restrictive for the type of job I have as an autoworker,  the reason I bought my first corsets was to help support my back after an injury , and restrict movement  to help keep the spine stable between chiropractic adjustments

Bonjour Mme.

Many of us American girls love corsets. There are 2 recent posts about corsets in fact.

I own a few myself, and I make custom corsets for others.

It depends on the girls upbringing here, and style. I live in the South, and many of the women I know down here have worn a corset. Up North when I lived there that was not the case, it was exotic.

I do medieval re-enactments.. so corsets are a must to get the right silhouette for my Elizabethan gowns. I have worn corsets since I was 15.

I love wearing and making my leather, silk, and satin corsets... I also have a exactant replica of a Elizabethan corset I just made as well.

Gwyn

Whatever do you mean, Americans don't love corsets?

I'm looking at a vendor list for an upcoming event I'm presenting at and there is no less than 10 different corset vendors, most of whom are custom corsettiers.  Having sold them myself as manager of a large retail fetish boutique and as a wearer, I'm extremely puzzled by your statements.  What logic or fact are they based upon?

I think the impression is that the general public in America do not do corsets, while the general public in France does.

Of course, big old generalization.

Yes......but the OP isn't addressing mainstream america.  This is a BDSM/kink board.  For pete's sake, we're deluged with corset makers.....LOL

That's one way to rationalize the OP's question but I don't think it works -- I've not noticed the general public in France being obviously corsetted.  And, even if they were, there are non-corset-wearing countries much closer to France than the US!

I just bought my first corset and LOVE it! Being very large breasted it's incredibly comfortable; I can't wear it for everything I do, but I've noticed that an evening in tight lacing for fetish reasons leaves me more shapley the next day or two. The first time I wore mine to a party I was checked out by every single guy in the park the next afternoon- walking the dog in sweats!
Even my very vanilla mother has expressed an interest in corsets. I think it's lack of knowledge and the fact that yes, they are difficult for some jobs and activities. Driving a car in a corset is hell, and that may be a problem with a ready made but still, modern life and steel boning can be perplexing.
I also wonder if the emphasis on custom made and the price of same don't run a lot of women off. A first underbust off the peg at a good price for experimentation would probably get women to take the plunge. I have a ready made leather one that needs more bones but the price was good for a toe in the pool.

I have a question for those of you who make your own corsets...

Do you use coutil for the lining or do you use a less expensive alternative?  If you use an alternative, what do you use?  I have found that I can get silk at my local fabric store at a reasonable price (keep an eye on sales and get it for less than $10 a yard) but the only place I have ever found coutil is online and boy is it pricey!

Ooohh I love corsets.  I am waiting on a leather one to arrive right now.  I would like to try my hand at making my next one.  I have sewn everything from wedding gowns to christening gowns, but have never done a corset.  Since I live on the Gulf Coast and we have a few Civil War era forts on the Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, there is a rather large contingent of Civil Wat re-enactors and I know quite a few women here corset.  It would still be interesting to know how many of my fellow shoppers at Walmart on any given Tuesday morning are wearing a corset while shopping for shamoo and chicken noodle soup.

Well I'm a Frenchspeaking Belgian and close French neighboor...Corsets isn't mainstream in France. It is still a strong erotic symbol , so it is usually part of the toys/symbol you sherish as a woman but I have never met a single French woman wearing it  in her daily life (except for medical reason). I think US/French are pretty similar as far as i know.

My grand mother (born in 1911) used to wear somekind of a corset but it was called something else(don't remember)...There was strictly nothing erotic, in fact it was pretty conservative.
