On the internet, in the cyber world, everyone can be whatever he or she likes. It is easy to be a fake, a lot easier than in any real life situation, where all kinds of clues can give away what/who you really are. So, the cyberworld attracts those who need a fake identity. It is my impression after quite a few years on this and other sites that there are a lot of fakers around. After many sincere and polite attempts to make contact, it would seem that internet invites a lot of people that are not ready to make the least investment in social contacts or display a modicum of politeness and good manners. Anonimity doesn't always bring out the best in people. Each and everytime one complains about this, the standard reaction, by the dozen, is "what do you expect, this is internet, welcome to the cyberworld" and one is chastized for being so naive (or worse). Fakeness seems to be an accepted standard on the net. I do not like this one bit, but I accept it, as it seems to be the price of literally having the whole world at your disposal. I do prefer this over the modest impact of an add in the local newspaper. Besides the real fakers, that see this site as a mere source of amusement to the detriment of the more serious seekers here, there are the 'would-be's' that just spoil some of the fun, especially here on the boards. One form of borderline fakeness in my opinion is people consistently giving "funny" answers to questions that are intended seriously and kill a thread by hijacking it. Or people making posts just for the sake of it (you know, some of the 10,000+ posters in just 3 years) or to prove how 'twuely' genuine and seasoned lifestylers they are. Some funny comments really are hilarious and appreciated though (thanks Ron & others!). To balance this all: I have met quite a few wonderful people here, often people solidly grounded in a lifestyle relationship or community, lacking the need to prove anything. It just takes a lot of tenacity and resilience to sort out these people from between the chaff. And I have learnt a great deal from frequenting the message boards, from people willing to share their knowledge, experience and wisdom. Before the end of the year, during a lifestyle weekend in a wonderful place, I hope to get to know better a lady that I met through the internet . . . Well, even on this site, now I've come to think of it! So, maybe all's well that ends well; even this truly disastrous year for me :-) Bless you all and a very happy and fulfilling 2008! P.S.: I think accusing people of having issues about a subject themselves if they are just asking a question is a bit cheap, Katy.
