RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at the end of a campaign rally, aides said.

"The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred," Bhutto's lawyer Babar Awan said.

A party security adviser said Bhutto was shot in neck and chest as she got into her vehicle to leave the rally in Rawalpindi near the capital Islamabad. A gunman then blew himself up.

Crap...

Sanity -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 7:55:05 AM)

It's sad, but I'm not surprised. She was far too Liberal to suit Muslim extremists. She was seen as very dangerous to their primitive world views, an affront to Allah.

Lashra -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 7:59:36 AM)

It is a damn shame. She was a light in the darkness and could have done so much good for those people. Its too bad so many of them still live in the dark ages.

When I first got on this morning I saw that headline -- my heart sank.  I have no idea what all this is about, other than someone wanting a return to the dark ages.

My heart is truly saddened by this event.

This will drive Pakistan into so much turmoil that it almost ensures the fall of Mushareff as well. I met her once at the UN and always hoped she would return to power and stabilize that part of the world for a while. Now I am wondering if this will be the event that leads to the nuclear genie getting out of the bottle. A black day in history for sure. Right up there with the assassination of Anwar Sadat just when there was a real possibility of peace in the Middle East.

Are you suggesting a conspiracy in both cases?

HaveRopeWillBind -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 8:53:50 AM)

Sadat was killed by the same extremists who eventually morphed into Al Queda. It would not surprise me to learn that they are behind or involved in this killing as well.

We all know that al queda was financed by the USA. So the USA controlled the puppets that murdered Sadat?
We also know that president Musharraf supported the unwarranted attack of the USA against the innocent people of Afghanistan. Bhutto was in opposition to Musharraf. So it is most likely that she was killed upon the instigation of Musharraf. Or else by al queda on behalf of the USA?

cyberdude611 -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 9:15:51 AM)

No...Sadat was assasinated by a different group called Egyptian Islamic Jihad, lead at that time by Ahmad Al-Zawahiri. Zawahiri merged with Al-Queda in 1998. Prior to 1998, Al-Queda was a seperate group.

Unlike Bin Ladin, Zawahiri has never been on the US payroll...he's always been an enemy. Today he is believed to be hiding out in the northern regions of Pakistan. The US bombed one of his safehouses in Afghanistan back in late 2001 killing his wife and children but he wasn't there at the time of the bombing.

Al-Queda wasn't even really a major group until the late 1980s where the US financed attacks on the Soviet Red Army while they were occupying Afghanistan.

HaveRopeWillBind -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 9:17:07 AM)

Al Queda had no connection to the US when its progenitor killed Sadat. The US only financed Al Queda while it was opposed to the USSR in Afghanistan. There is no current connection and has not been one since the fall of the USSR. Mushareff did not care for Bhutto, but he is smart enough not to assassinate her because she did have popular support. If anything he would have exiled her again had it been his choice.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 9:25:23 AM)

This whole thing puts Musharaf's power in jeopardy. Although he didnt like Bhutto all that much, it would not bring him any benefit at all to see her killed. The death puts his government in a very vulnerable position.

It must be a Christian-Hindu-Zionist plot to frame Islam. Islam cherrishes its women and would never do such a thing as blow a woman up unless she allowed her self to get raped.

How do you figure that? It seems to give him ample excuse for another crackdown.

In times of fear and uncertainty people will always choose that which is familiar to them.

(edit: 'In times of...' bit added.)

Surely all assasinations are by definition a conspiracy. I agree it looks as if Al Queda and its forerunners, could be behind both killings. Bhutto could have cut deals with the Army but not with the hardliners. I`m not so sure she ever did a great deal for the country while in power though. Mainly due to opposition from the ruling elite.

She wanted change though and its a great shame for Pakistan that this has happened.

DarkDaddyZ -> RE: Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack (12/27/2007 12:39:10 PM)

and so 2008 the shit continues.  I was so hoping to be wrong here.  When they let Mandela out of prison in 1989, I said "He wouldn't last 6 months."  South Africa proved me wrong.  When Bhutto returned, I said the same thing and I was hoping to be wrong.  They got her and the shit continues.  It's about to get even uglier, watch and see. Very sad situation.
