What do you love about where you live? Hate? Would  you move if you could? Where?

christine1 -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 7:01:02 AM)

i live in a state where the wages are low and the taxes are high...that is my biggest complaint here.  on the other hand, my town is surrounded my gorgeous mountains and mountain lakes and all kinds of outdoor activities are minutes away.  also, lots of places are closed on sundays and the alcohol laws are ridiculous as the majority religion dictates so many things here.  i do think that in the next 3 or so years i will probably move somewhere where the taxes aren't astronomical and the wages are a little more decent.  any one have any suggestions?

Hi Level, and happy new year.

I love that the town where I live is on the seacoast; I love its quaintness and cute shops; I like that it's a liberal town with generally high standards of education. I like that there are a few independent bookshops scattered around. Its rose garden is lovely.

I don't like the fact it's that small that one can walk around the town center in under half an hour. Its weather's a bit extreme for an ex-European accustomed to a more temperate climate. It's parochial. And there's a few too many Ralph Lauren wearing preppies with blond hair and tanned skin hanging around.

All in all though, it could be worse. Hell! I could have ended up living in the South [:D] !

KatyLied -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 7:10:06 AM)

I probably would not move.  My family is here and I lived away from them for 20 years.
The thing I love/hate is the same....it's a small town.  People help each other, but you also have a sense that they watch you coming/going.  For example, I work two jobs, some of the neighbors didn't know that and wondered what was going on in my life and why I was "never home."  That is creepy and comforting.  I live one hour from a city, plus I live within  10-15 miles of some of the best bike trails.

New to the forums...usually just a casual browser but I guess I couldnt resist posting to this one lol.

I live in a small-ish town which is very...very conservative...it's hard to find anything terribly exciting to do that doesn't cost money, or that's just any fun. I don't do the bar scene, I don't do the hunting scene so that leaves very little. The good thing about this town is they have a college where I can FINALLY get the degree I've been trying so hard to get, and I'm almost done with that adventure then off to Portland Oregon for me where I'll finally be able to relax and be myself for once without hiding who I am.

Off to work for me, have a good day!

Youngstown, Ohio is the stereotypical Rust Belt area.  We've been in an economic downward spiral for about 30 years now. It's a dying town with a proud working class past, full of empty steel mills and urban decay. There are hardly jobs, most of the city's schools are in fiscal emergency status. I don't really see this area having any real future, although there are groups of people trying very hard to revitalize it.

When you scratch the surface, you see some "Old World" European flavor that's hard to find outside of the NE part of the US. We have a very colorful, ethnic history showing itself in Catholic Church festivals, specialty food shops, archtitecture. I don't think there's anything I hate about Youngstown. Hate's a strong word, I feel more sadness then anything else. I wouldn't recommend anybody moving here, but I love it anyway. It's my home. =)

Our roots are right here, so I doubt we'll be moving until the kids are safely established as adults. We were thinking about retiring in West Virginia. Away from malls, away from suburbs, somewhere I can putter around in a plot of land to my heart's content.

Let's see, I live in North NJ, right near NYC:

Love: living right near NYC, lots of access to cultural arts which I love as well as access to really anything you want honestly, live right next to water with a great view, beautiful park on other side, family lives within hour drive, beautiful state if you know where to look, great shopping, opportunities for jobs, Bruce Springsteen.

Hate: congestion, impossible to find parking, horrible traffic, impossible to get anywhere, expensive, the nonstop overdevelopment of ruining the waterfront with huge condos, living in an apartment (would love more room), the bad jokes about Jersey (its not all Sopranos), getting taxed as a Jersey resident working in NYC, extremely competitive environment and while there are so many people here in the tri-state area, it is actually difficult meeting people since people here are not as friendly and open as the rest of the country. When I travel, people actually say hello and have conversations, here people have road rage, talk on cells all day while walking around and generally act like they are in their own little bubbles.

That is why it always amuses me when people say, what?? You have not met the right guy yet with all the men in NJ and NY? Actually, I think it might be easier to get to know people living in a place where life was less frenetic and accelerated.  There was a study done about how isolated many people in big cities actually are and how hard that was to believe but if you live here, you would know why.

Obviously, every place has it's pros and cons and it is you who are the common denominator after all, but location does play a role in life, I am a believer in that.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 7:45:58 AM)

i love that its home and its familiar and comforting.

i hate that the folks wont approve any new construction for homes under 300k or so-and eventually i wont be able to afford to live here any more.  my lil old neighborhood is the last of small frame ranches, and everyone around me had been bought out to build mcmansions.

i also hate that most of the signs on the main drag are no longer in english, and the dq we used to cruise when i was a teen closed down last week after 49 years.

OH wow...what I love about my hometown.

What I love about my hometown is that I live right across the street from a gentleman who takes a genuine interest in my children. He is the son of the town historians and has stories galore of life around here from when it was nothing but a Chippewa hunting and fishing locale to modern times as told to him by his parents. He's in his 80s and when he was younger, he used to come to our schools to share those stories after his parents had both passed away. Up until this past October, he would go every day as early as he could and spend the day with his wife who was in a nursing home. We'd go outside after snowstorms to find our driveway had already been cleared - he'd gotten out earlier than we did and gotten it all done. He once showed up at my door asking how my son was doing in school. Turns out he'd been planning on taking his grandson to the ballgame but when that young man didn't do well in school, he took my son instead. He does this for most of the young people around here. We take him food and cookies and invite him to dinner so that he doesn't have to cook and be alone. All the neighbors do this. Most of the people around here are like he is. Some of them aren't. We're extra nice to them. Many times, they find themselves being grudgingly nice to us in return. It's the way things are.

What I like about my hometown is that when I moved back after getting a divorce, I took my family to dinner one night. As I was getting everyone back into the car during a snow storm to make the drive home, a couple of men came out of the restaurant where we were and took the brush I was using to clean off my car right out of my hand. I got nervous. They just smiled and said "go ahead and get the car started, we'll take care of this." When I protested that I could manage, they just looked at me and said "This is N.B. This is how we do things around here."

What I like about my hometown is going to football games on a Friday night and discovering all the names on the jerseys are the same names that were there when I went to that school. Now, it's my classmate's families and I sit in the stands with many of the people I went to school with 30 years ago.

What I like about my hometown is the HUGE christmas tree in the center of the street that everyone has to drive around every christmas - and the fact that it's decorated with decorations made by the students at the 5 elementary schools around here. I like that on the first weekend of December, the entire town (for the most part) gathers at the christmas tree, sings christmas carols led by the choirs at the schools and everyone used to walk down the street to the restaurant I was mentioning before to have hot chocolate and say hi to everyone.I say they used to because last year, the restaurant burned down.

What I like about my hometown is the fair that comes every June right around Father's Day. I like that I can ride the ferris wheel to the top and look out over the lake to see the sun glistening and the islands out there looking like little emerald gems. I like elephant ears and riding the rides. Then, after a day there, I take my family home, get cleaned up and head back that night to the beer tent, where everyone over 21 gathers. Inside the beer tent are the carnies, motorcycle gangs, senior citizens and young adults. Everyone gets along (ok, there's the obligatory drunken fight between a few people, but the police are always on hand - their precinct is right next to the beer tent) and we dance the night away. I like the fact that two hours before the parade on Sunday, all the shady spots along the route have been taken and no one is watching anyone's chairs. People simply came, set up their spots, complete with chairs, coolers full of soft drinks and umbrellas, blankets, etc and then went home knowing full well that all their stuff would be there when they came back in 2 hours. I even like the millions of fishflies that the town celebrates in an "if you can't beat em, join em" attitude with the fair. They stink to high heaven and we all love to watch people new to the area going "ewwww." Then we teach them about fishfly kisses and watch new groups of people come to appreciate our locally loved pest.

What I like about my hometown is that the three main churches in town all look exactly alike, with white siding, a huge vestibule with steps leading up to the doors, and giant copper steeples. I like that on Sunday mornings every church bell in town is ringing.

What I like about my hometown is that it's changing. More people are moving in, bringing different cultural aspects with them and for some reason, we seem to be doing things right with all these new groups of people being accepted. Sure we have our problems, but when those happen, people tend to support those who are having the problems and life moves on.

What I like about my hometown is that my family members know that if they ever do anything wrong, at least three people will know about it at all times and they will know people who will know people who will eventually know how to get in contact with me. And I like how we all keep track of those who might otherwise get themselves into trouble and help them stay out of it for the most part. Yes, we do have our crime - some of it big enough to make national headlines (the Selenak murders), but even then, what I like is that our community pulls together in the worst of times.

What I like about my hometown is that it's less than an hour from Detroit, which means I'm close enough to enjoy all the city has to offer (and it's quite a bit, contrary to what some people might think) and far enough out to enjoy all the things that rural living on a lake has to offer. I love boating and theatre and camping and going to concerts in the city on hot summer nights. Here, I can have it all.

What I love about my hometown is that at the ripe old age of 48, I can still have a pollyanna-ish view of the world because for the most part, where I live helps to make me feel safe enough to believe that people are essentially good. Yes, over the years, that's been tempered with a realistic view of people, but still, that idea that the world CAN be a good place if we all work together has held with me.

What I like about my hometown is that for the last 10 years, I've never had to lock my doors at night. Sometimes I do, but for the most part, it doesn't even occur to me that I should.

I've lived in other places, both rural, suburban and urban. I have lived in other states. I can't tell you I love the snow when it shows up in February...and March...and April...(In April, we all "get religion" and figure what God put on the ground, he can take away cause we're sick to death of shovelling snow) but I wouldn't live anywhere else. I've never found ANYWHERE that has the same sense of continuity and community to it.

That's what I love about my hometown.

I tried to think of what I hate about my hometown...I suppose that I'd have to say I hate that I live so far away from my friends. Of course, when they come out on a summer day and exclaim how they wish they lived out here then, it's all good. But on a late night when I'm struggling to stay awake for the drive home, I do wish I lived a bit closer to the places I go at night.

My hometown and  residence is Columbia, South Carolina.

Hates: The Good Ol' Boy System, people with their heads up their asses, Zealot Bible Thumpers. Red Necks and the fact that we are sandwiched between Atlanta and Charlotte because no one notices us.

Loves. The South: where family and traditon and a slower pace of life are important. Because living here means I am not a Damn Carpet Bagging Yankee. Traditon, Honor

Chicago:

i love the shopping, the diverse ethnic cultures and neighborhoods, the food, museums, sports, the view along the lakefront, the cold winter weather (bring on the snow!), the awesome music venues, the clubbing nightlife, the Rock-n-Roll McDonalds and public transportation that runs 24/7

i hate the hot summer heat, the crime, rush hour traffic, high taxes

however in less than 7 months i'll be trading all of this for scenic mountain and ocean views, less snow during the winter, more independent bands to review from L.A. to Seattle

no love or hate at all.

acissej -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 9:15:23 AM)

I live in Central NJ, about two hours from Manhattan.

I love that I live only a few miles from the beach and I'm within walking distance of water.  I like that my town is liberal, artsy and relatively ethnically diverse (though I wish it was much more diverse), even though it's small.  I like that there's good shopping nearby and I don't even have to step inside a NJ mall.   I adore my house and yard, and love that the soil and sunlight let me have thriving flower and vegetable gardens.  I like that I have enough room for two dogs and my baby grand piano.

I don't like that my town isn't NYC--my commute is significantly longer than the ten minutes I had to travel in the city; I can't have Korean BBQ or Ethiopian food delivered at 4am; it's an ordeal to see friends and family on evenings or weekends; I can't rely wholly on public transportation (I hate driving!).  I wish my town got more snow--I'm one of the crazy people that actually likes to shovel.  I hate that my town's library has been under construction for the three years we've been living here.  I hate fighting shore traffic in the summer.

Would I move?  Yes.  Where?  I'm not sure.  We're going to have our first UM soon, so I don't think I'd want to move back to NYC (too expensive for too little space), but I would like to be able to take advantage of the city on a more regular basis and be closer to friends and family.  We're only two hours away now, but those two hours can make a big difference.

bipolarber -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 9:35:17 AM)

I'm in Central Arkansas.

Love: I'm in a 3 university town. Lots of college age kids running around. Makes for a very youth-oriented vibe.

Hate: It's in a "dry" county. (a leftover from prohibition era) No alcohol sales. No stores, no nightclubs. THAT sucks!

If I were to move:  (providing I could afford it) I think I'd move to San Francisco. I was out there for a week a few years back, and just fell in love with the town. And any city that has a "sex" button on it's official website is okay in my book. Folsom St. fair, numerous BDSM clubs, a thriving GLBT scene...  yeah, if I win the lotto, San Francisco here I come!

subfever -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 10:05:56 AM)

I love Chicago. It's a diverse, vibrant city with almost unlimited things to do. My children all live here, as do my parents, siblings, other relatives, and most of my long-term close friends. The business I've worked for decades would have to be built up from scratch, if I relocated. So, for all of these reasons, I don't intend to leave anytime soon.

The cold winters I could do without, however. And sometimes the traffic annoys me too, though I'm typically able to avoid rush hour.

It's the Sacramento area, need I say more?!  I mean, what's culture around here?  The area is full of people who cashed out in the Bay Area & LA, and could suddenly afford homes they thought they never could and think they're rich.  There's a false aura up here that doesn't appeal much to me.

Yes!!  And I'm going to!  The beauty of getting laid off is this gives me lots of time to find a new job and place to live.  :)

I'll be moving minutes away from Mr. Wonderful.  It was planned for February but pushed back to the Spring.  I can't wait!  [:D]

slaveboyforyou -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 10:21:41 AM)

I live in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  I love a lot of things about it here.  I grew up here, and it's small enough to drive through in 20 minutes.  It's the only city in the United States that completely surrounds a national park.  We have the hot springs here, and you can jug it for free downtown.  Free mineral water, you can't beat that.  It's a artsy town with a very colorful history.  The entire downtown area is filled with art galleries, bars, and some of the most beautiful architecture.  The history of Hot Springs is fascinating  This used to be a wide open town with gambling and bordellos.  Al Capone and other noted gangsters used to vacation here.  Bill Clinton and Alan Ladd grew up here.  There is horse racing in the spring, and I love horse races.  There are 4 lakes in the area, and they have some of the clearest water in the United States with some of the best fishing.  It's cheap to live here.  You can buy a really nice house here for under 100K.  Less than 2 hours away is a diamond mine that's open to the public. People for the most part are friendly and they aren't in a hurry.  There is a lot to like.

However there are things I don't like.  It's a small town, and it's in Arkansas.  We are more liberal than a lot of towns in Arkansas, but there is still a undertone of Baptist fundamentalism.  It's a resort town, so most of the jobs are in the service industry and they don't pay well.  The crime rate here is pretty bad for a town with only 35,000 people.  We were ranked the 13th most dangerous metropolitan statistical area in the country.  We are the only town on the list with under 100,000 people.  People around here raised holy hell about being on that list, but it's the truth.  There are places around here I won't go at night, and that's bad for a small city.  Because it's a resort town, we have a lot of retirees living here.  Most of those retirees are Yankees.  They are often at odds with the locals, and they kind of look down there nose at those of us that grew up here.

The only think i love about where i live are the lakes and reservoirs i am close to that provide a beautiful setting, i am about 1 to 2 hours from the Catskills so we have small mountains around us, yet we are close to the LI sound where if you drive out to Jones beach you are right on the ocean.

i hate that there are no sidewalks and very few places to go or things to do unless you want to go into NYC - which is an hour train ride or car ride - less by car actually.  i hate the absense of community - outside of being involved in your ums school theres nothing.  i used to enjoy living in the city and saying i would be back 10 minutes from the deli only to run into people along the way and return an hour later, seeing so many familiar faces say hello to me and ask how so and so is and just generally feel that connection.

i would move if i could but i made a committment to my um's that they would grow up rooted in one place and not have their educational experience interrupted - i want to give them stability i never had (i went to 3 different elem schools, 1 middle school and 4 high schools) That SUCKED.

When i first relocated i thought out of the city would be better on the ums - not sure that was a correct assumption.  i also still go back to my old neighborhoods to shop - not as much as 10 years ago - i am starting just now to cave in and do the mall thing *ugh*

i still hate the deli's and chinese food up here [:'(]  i miss the ethnic food that was so readily available - and i mean authentic ethnic food not Applebees and Chili alltastethesame crap.

Where - closer to NYC - if not in the city itself. Doubt i will ever be able to afford it though - i will ALWAYS regret giving up my beautiful large rooms, ground floor, nice neighborhood, rent stabalized apartment - if i still had it i would only be paying maybe 600 a month for it now [sm=ofcourse.gif]

rubberpet -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 11:02:50 AM)

My hometown of Crowley, Louisiana is a nice little town.  We have so much fun here.  I remember when we got our first stoplight, we had the colors picked out ahead of time because we were so excited!  But the other day, they had to close the library because someone checked out the book!  The messed up part is when they brought it back, they didn't even finish coloring it!

Seriously, though.  It's just big enough where you do feel like you live in Mayberry, yet small enough where lots of people know your name.  Hell, we even have a Wal-Mart, so we made the big times!  But there isn't a whole lot to do at night for entertainment.  We have one movie theater with four (that's right...count them...FOUR) screens and about 17 bars to get drunk and play pool at.  Other than that, there ain't much there...LOL.  Although, be sure to be there the third weekend in October...it's the International Rice Festival.  There are rides for the kids, games, craft booths, LOADS of Cajun and Creole food vendors, and 24 hour music and street dancing (and they play everything from country and rock to cajun and zydeco.  Believe me, we know how to party down here.  Too bad it comes only once a year, though[&o].

Aileen1968 -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/29/2007 11:32:24 AM)

I live in Central/Northwest NJ in a very small rural town (actually there isn't really a town...just a bank, post office and local convenience store that has everything you need).
Love: that they know me at the bank, post office and convenience store by name.
that there are no sidewalks and street lights.
          that there are farms galore
that I live in the country, but drive an hour and I can be in NYC, Philly or at the beach.
that my home, while rural, retains an incredibly high value because of it's location to the city.
that, while rural, I can shop at any store you can imagine...all under an hour's drive.

Hate:  that my taxes are incredibly high
          that it's not culturally enlightened

If I could live anywhere...North Carolina coast.  The Outer Banks!!!!
