Heavens.  My home town is the Susquehanna Valley- central PA.  As I drove in last night- my blood pressure lowered. I love to many days of clear blue skies. I love that people live the golden rule. I love that folks look out for one another. I love that there is law and order. I love that I can live here in one house- by myself- and not be dependent on a rooom-mate. I love the mountains and river. I love the mountain mist and the accent.

Now the bad. I wish to move further out. We are becoming a vast suburb-with sprawal noise traffic- and what we politely term as "influx".  [city slickers migrating the drug-gang-crime ways here]

Also- I miss my mom.

Governor  "Cadillac" Deval Patrick.

not sure where the nickname came from...but pretty sure it has to do with him being African-American...but pardon me if i'm wrong... hasn't he just become governor? How exactly did that affect you personally?

Iron, I'm from Boston origionally.
I listen to the Howie Carr Show on the computer every weekday.
When Patrick became Governor of Massachusetts he refused to ride in the Ford Crown Victoria that Gov. Mitt Romney had as the official governor's car.
Instead, he wanted a Cadillac and state police escorts in other cars ahead of and behind him.
Finally after much controversey he agreed to pay for half of the Cadillac with the Taxpayers picking up the tab for the other half.
Evidently the Ford Crown Vic that Mitt Romney rode around in wasn't good enough for His Highness so now they call him "Cadillac Duval" a name play on "Cadillac Deville."
And one of his campaign slogans was, "Let's reach for that!"
You can imagine the fun that Howie Carr and his listeners had with that one!
Demanding to be driven around in a Cadillac!
A real, "Man of the People" that one!

Washington, D.C.

WHAT I LIKE

-- Beautiful city, great for walking

-- Lots of smart and talented people

-- Beaux Arts architecture

-- Incredible museums, most of them free

-- Vibrant gay community

-- Aunts and cousins in the area

-- Liberal churches

-- National Cathedral

-- Lots of green spaces

-- Good and abundant bookstores

-- Canoeing on the Potomac

-- Neighborhood that feels like a friendly village

WHAT I DISLIKE

-- Housing prices

-- Dysfunctional local government that's a national joke

-- Urban sprawl

-- Crowds on Metro

-- Not many jobs in my field here

-- Taxation without representation

-- Congress's ability to overturn local laws

-- Long drive to the beach

-- Overzealous security, especially after 9/11

After working most of my life in NYC,I was so glad to retire home.We live in a small town with one stop sign, everyone just about knows everyone

The down side is that everyone knows what Fred and Ethel is doing, who comes to visit and what they had for dinner...WE moved to the old family farm on top of the mountains and love it.Drinking coffee as you watch the horses and deer playing and wild turkeys in the back yard.Yep the country life for me..

Hell, yes.

I work with them, go to church with them, hang out with them.

Why they put up with me is anyone's guess.

My hometown, Charleston, South Carolina has been voted The Friendliest City in the Nation for 10 years in a row.  Manners are abundant like saying "Sir" and "Ma'am" and holding doors open for others, people say "please" and "thank you", law and order in most areas, (unless you are in or live in the section 8/government assisted housing)

What I don't like about South Carolina is the closed-mindedness of the powers-that-be and the fact that the BDSM and Occult societies are way underground and hard to find...that's why I love living in Seattle now.

I'm fifth generation born to where I live.  It made history class's very interesting.
Now dating it was a different story, at times it seemed I was related to half the boys I met.
Can't come completely out of the closet about the lifestyle (unless with family) out of respect for other family members who are working in high profile positiions.

What do you love about where you live? Hate? Would  you move if you could? Where?

What I love about where I live, my adopted home on the border of South  West Devon and North East Cornwall, is the people, and their attitude. So layed back and  accepting,a slow pace of life, where one's life comes before their employment.A magnet for artists and craftsmen countrywide. Then of course the wonderful countryside and mild weather.A beach ten minutes walk away and a similar distance to any one of three friendly pubs selling good beer, with good cheer.

Hate, well, that would have to be the rise of crime, in particular youth crime that is over the passed year becoming a problem.A problem which affects all of the UK , but here the constabulary always had a reputation, for taking no shit, a kind of 'nip it in the bud' attitude, which this year seems not to have been applied, much to everyone's dissaproval.

I could say many things that do annoy me, but me as a recent resident to the area, really has no complaint to what can be annoying to all, but at the end of the day brings commerce to what can be a poor part of the country.Crime to me is a problem, wherever I may go and it is the thing I hate most about any area.

Move, that may come in years to come, I am where I am, the land of my ancestors, to fulfill a purpose. That purpose is to become a fully able metalsmith, specialising in the black smith arts, at one of four independant specialist art colleges in the UK.This one being the best equipped in the country.

If I do move, then I will go where I and my craft is welcomed, where I can just be and do what I do with the pleasure I need.Dartmoor maybe, Exmoor, Bodmin moor, any out of the way place in Britain, even abroad.I do like Sweden, so much space and privacy.A place where one can be what they want to be and there is thousands of miles of forest and lake to live in.I have just stayed a week in an old torp in the forest, the simple living does appeal, firewood and water being the chief concern.Always at these places there is a workshop of sorts, and in this one even a farriers forge.A place where in dreams I can live and be and exercise my art of crafting kinky metal for kinky people.

It's a suburb and you have to drive everywhere. I would much rather walk or ride my bike...

The Winter sucks ass....Otherwise I really wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I really love where I live.

What I hate about it... It's not Chicago:(

MissSCD -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/31/2007 3:56:23 AM)

I think John Mellencamp's "Pink Houses" describes my home town.  I still live here with my family and friends.  I went into the miiitary for three years and got to see the other side of the country,
Basically, this town is still small enough to know everyone, but large enough to hide some times.
It is a small town without little opportunity.

Regards, MissSCD

Rumtiger -> RE: What do you love/hate about your home town? (12/31/2007 5:42:10 AM)

Pros: Booze, Sex, Gambling, and easy to get these and pretty much anything else you want on someone else's dime if you know what your doing.

Oh yeah, and it's all just basically a stones throw away.

Cons: Rent costs a shitload. All the people who decided to live here instead of just visiting are fucked things up.
