Tonight as I had a pint of English Ale in a Swedish pub, I had to laugh.What I laughed at was a row of handwritten signs along the top of the British beer pumps.That word was 'slut', I take to mean none left, gone, finished or something of that order,my Swedish is not that great.But I found it amusing the word 'slut' and how often one hears it,but here meaning something entirely different than the type of slut that sits in my mind. A woman in a shop, a conversation going on about something or other, and then the shop assistant saying 'slut' to the other women, well it makes me laugh to myself. This experience with the word 'slut' got me thinking to how many other foreign words there are that mean something entirely harmless, when we of a different language hear it, we have a private snigger and think of other things. Has anyone else come across words such as this?

In Germany they're always talking about "Preishit," which is their clever way of saying "reduced-price sale" (literally "price hit").

Even within the same language words can have very different meanings in different countries. A while back there was this hair removal goop from Australia that was being marketed here. The name of the stuff was Nads. Well, I don’t know what nads means in Australia but in my part of America nads is a slang term for testicles. I first found out about this while walking past a store (I’ll leave their name out of this) one day. I saw some people pointing up at the store’s street sign and laughing. The sign said (and I swear to God, I’m not making this up): Just in from Australia: Nads, two for $9.99. Well now I was laughing along with everyone else. People were making jokes. One man wanted to know what was wrong with good, old fashioned, American nads. One women said that Aussie nads might be an interesting change of pace from American nads. Another woman wondered if "two" nads meant two individual nads, for a complete set or two sets of nads. I feel sorry for the guy married to the woman who said that she could use a set for her husband. Needless to say the sign came down before the end of the day. The only thing I don’t understand is why the store owner didn’t realize what he was doing.

In the UK a cigarette is a fag but here in North American a derogative slang term for a homosexual male.

I long to meet someone called Mr Shuft or similar Because, "mister Schuft" has the most wonderful meaning in German. (yes, I know, it was backwards - but I've been at the Bailey's so there!) E

Being a swede myself i can tell you we are strange :) and its not because we are naturally blonde!!! [:D] they even give us metal DOG tags when we are registered birth certificates.

Though that tends to be expensive. Red works better with my skin tone than blonde does. Wish i could get it strawberry blonde...but i have to bleach to do that apparently...which is really expensive and may not work. Red also works well because i have some cute little freckles on my face.

I decided to make my hair blonde when I was 18 (the signs were there from early on) It turned out the most delightful strawberry blonde the world has ever seen - I went from nerdgeek number 2 to being nearly cool, overnight. If only I'd worn the heels and the skirt to college, eh? anyway, since taking HRT my hair went sort of blonde anyway (and every colour from brown to blonde too) E

I believe Sweden also once had a breakfast food named "Cock." Recently, a Japanese company changed the name of their drink, originally titled "Calpis." On the flip side: The Chevy Nova didn't do very well in Latin and S. America because "no va" means "it doesn't go" in Spanish. Nescafe had problems also, because in certain Spanish accents it sounds like "no es cafe" or "it isn't coffee."

I should have known better, and did sober, as I am first gen Scottish American and knew what a fanny was there. Here it's your ass, there it's your pussy. Oh yeah and the time in the market that I let slip ''oh they have fanny packs!'' The woman smiled and said I have heard it before petal. Could go on all day regarding UK and US language.
