Many of the submissives I speak to seem to fall very short of their full potential. Two have the potential to get straight As all the time and have very high IQs (based on my questions about their standardized test scores) and yet they dropped out of college and do *nothing*. Another barely took any courses needed to get into college even though when I saw her HW assignments, I can see she is good at school.

I myself do the same thing, but not as badly as some of the girls I speak to.

Do submissive girls have a serious tendancy to avoid their full potential? Or is it just a coincidence that I speak to such people?

These girls are still young.

I think your suggestion lacks merit. I have been into BDSM since age 16 and always had straight A's. I am successful in business. So your sample size is probably too small to be statistically correct.

The sentence might be equally true if you replaced the word submissives with people.

some folks do not measure themselves, or their successes, according to their academic aptitude or university degrees.

this slave has met and interacted with many fine, well-adjusted, intelligent, fun-loving, well-rounded individuals who shun academics and those that hoist them up on pedestals for their book-smarts like the plague.

valuing intelligence over all else is just as shallow as valuing beauty over all else, in a submissive, a Dominant or any other individual.

I am more professionally and educationally qualified than most people I meet and way above the average. In terms of IQ, EQ and SQ I am (without boasting) probably on a par with Einstein.....neverthless I am a sexual slut and have a submissive personality.
I am however only a sample size of 1 so maybe you will have to question a few hundreds more of me taken at random. Even so that won't prove anything........

cautiousiasub -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 7:58:57 PM)

I'm not sure if all or most subs have the tendency to underachieve. I certainly hope not. Some people are late bloomers, and don't go straight to college after high school. Ten years ago, you might have called me an underachiever..I worked a full-time job that didn't require a college degree (I didn't have one). My interests and goals weren't focused on college, they were focused on doing the best job I could at work, spending time with my family, and having fun. My achievements were not through good grades, etc., but through the satisfaction of doing my best no matter what.  For some people, college and grades are not how they measure their potential. For others, it's very important. I've seen both ends myself, and once I did go to college, overachievement reared it's ugly head.

Agreed,  my son has a 150 IQ, never completed high school and even failed classes on purpose ..... he got bored with classes plus got fed up being called a brown noser, he was content at the time to settle for less, just because a person has the ability  they may lack the motivation  or see no need  or circumstances in their lives may prevent  them from achieving their full potential

TemptingNviceSub -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 8:05:54 PM)

The only underachievement I would reflect upon, would be a LIFE of underachievement..a life of consistent selling ones self short..a life of giving up before even attempting to start..a life of no hope...a life of no goals what so ever...a life where you stop learning ANYTHING new...This kind of underachievement to me, is the disease......Tempting

juliaoceania -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 8:11:17 PM)

I Graduated from college at the top of my class, with honors, president's list, etc. I pushed myself to achieve these things and had never had a dominant when I began my pursuit of academic excellence. Many other submissives that post here are high achieving and successful at their chosen endeavors... so if you feel that you are not living up to your full potential, that has nothing to do with your submissiveness in my opinion.

These girls whom you speak of may not want to reach what you see as their full potential, and I find that term to be rather subjective.

Edited to add... I will never reach my full potential because there are so many ways to have potential that we cannot possibly act on all of them in a given lifetime... just my view

I have never met *anyone* anywhere to underachieve quite like two of the sub girls I know.

I also nearly failed out of high school. Depression mostly.

And I never knew anyone that claimed to be as educated and as intelligent as you claim to be engage in such logical fallacies.... think about that, two submissives out of many many submissives... that is called a faulty generalization.

kitttty -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 8:15:44 PM)

I have tended to notice that this is not essential to submissive personalities. Clearly many sub women are high achievers.

But this reminds me of the first sub girl I ever met, who had a 1.7 GPA her freshman year before she met her Dom. She married him and now is getting a PhD.

Think about that one- how much would one have to do to compensate for 1.7 GPA and get into a PhD program? A fucking lot.

You're missing the point. I have not observed that most submissives underachieve, I have observed that the most severe cases of underachievement I have seen were young female submissives.

Aileen1968 -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 8:18:19 PM)

So based on your theory...every sub would be underachieving.  Everyone?
That is such a broad generalization that it's ridiculous.
Did you ever think that it's more likely that you just tend to gravitate towards people more like you in terms of drive and goals in life?

I had a 2.01 GPA when I graduated high school. I had a 3.90 when I got my BA and I am applying to get into a PhD program for my discipline at one of the top universities in this country... I did not have a dominant that made me apply myself, life happened  and I learned how much I love to learn...

Now some people may need someone to push them, but I have to say, in order to become a doctor of anything, one usually has to be intrinsically motivated to do that work on some level

How many cases of underachievement have you seen? Two? I have met many people who were happy just to get by no matter what they were doing.

Where is the generalization? Go read my posts and go find the generalizations. Did I say that submissives have a tendancy to underachieve? No, actually. Try making some other inference.

No. These are girls that randomly found me online.

Four. Four extreme cases. That is getting passed the point of coincidence.

juliaoceania -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 8:24:49 PM)

I think it is rather common for young people to not have a real idea of what they want or where they want to go, and I am assuming that these are two young women just starting out in life. Many young people are like this, and that is what life is about, learning about yourself and what you want.

You think this is a submissive trait, it is most likely a trait of the very young... just my opinion

kitttty -> RE: The underachieving disease (1/1/2008 8:25:09 PM)

I should note that all four cases were of self identified slaves and not simply submissives.
