Spelling/typing/grammatical errors happen, but if I feel like I'm translating gibberish into English, then I'm not interested.  I happen to have dyslexia and I have enough trouble sometimes getting the gist of what is being posted without trying to read posts from someone who types like an epileptic babboon.  I've been told off repeatedly for this, but seriously - if I get a headache trying to read and make sense of a post/e-mail, what's the point?  I have worked hard to overcome my problem with typing, I expect at least some effort from others.

A "Leet" is a furry, cuddly creature resembling a rodent. Living up to their name, leets speak in leet speak and have a strong following of players. The names of the various kinds of leets found in the game world plays on the term, with progressively stronger leets named Eleet, Leetas, Soleet, Phear Leet and Supa Leet, in addition to special unique leets named Joo, Ownz and brb. Their cuteness has in many ways made them a mascot for the game, with calls for plush leet dolls being common.

Bah, skip the definitions. Go read Megatokyo. Asside from being somewhat entertaining as a webcomic it's darn near a primer for L33T speak.

Now why you'd NEED a primer for such an annoying thing, is beyond me, but it's actually entertaining in the context of the comic.

I saw this post and HAD to reply...Being literacy-oriented Myself, I have had guys ask why it is such a sore subject with Me.  The whole "your"/"you're" thing, "its" vs. "it's", especially "seen" instead of "saw"...To someone like Me, poor grammar comes across as carelessness.  Typos are one thing, and, yes, I am guilty of abbreviating as long as the meaning is well-known.  But to consistently misspell words that are commonly used, esp when it is important to the recipient, can be disrespectful.  Like Me neglecting My hygiene, for example.  Has anyone else thought, maybe it could be a trait with dominant personalities to be a little anal about the details?
regards,
MD

I'm a linguist and it grates on my last nerve to see spelling and grammar errors. For me, it's a personal preference. If the person has poor spelling and grammar, I wouldn't have as much desire to read anything they've written.

It's sort of like trying to have a serious conversation with someone who has something stuck in their teeth. You'll find it hard to concentrate on what they are saying at all!

While poor writing skills may not be an indication of personal intellect, it certainly seems that way when trying to decipher something that's badly written.

If an individual choses to use this medium - online - as a means of reaching out and contacting others, then yes, they should take the time and make the effort to be careful with their writing styles.  Most of us make some errors from time to time, but some emails and posts are so badly written, it's nearly impossible to understand what the person is trying to communicate.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/2/2008 6:30:53 AM)

What the other ladies (and Kumasan) said!  :)  It is not only submissives who are guilty of Evil Grammar:  I have seen some dominant profiles pop up that just alarm me.  What self respecting woman would submit to someone who can't even spell-check his profile?    I used to have a sig line, "If you can't spell it, don't ask for it!"

thetammyjo -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/2/2008 6:48:15 AM)

I'm dyslexic but that doesn't mean I can't try to use simple English. Words get underlined in red if they are misspelled so I can try again or use a dictionary.

Does this mean it takes me a bit more time to write than the average person? Maybe except I'm a quick writer so I think it evens out.

So is someone is spelling things using online slang or no concept of periods, sentences, or paragraphs it strongly suggests they are not concerned with how well they are communicating.

If you don't take that time, should you honestly be surprised when your message is misunderstood or ignored?

I don't think that is an excuse though for others to be rude and attack people for poor writing skills even if they ask for feedback. One can give feedback without being mean such as saying "I honestly can't understand what you've written. You might want to look into improving your written communication skills".

Grammar and spelling so not need to be perfect to communicate but when the impede understanding or discourage others from attempting to understand the only person who can fix that problem is the person writing.

It has merit if one is incomphrehensible.

If one is bitching about a misplaced comma or semi colon? Might be the desperate power grab of somebody with a need to be a control freak.[;)]

I am a sub male, and that is a sore spot for me. I can accept informal languge, but some people write like they never went to school at all. And use a dictionary. The original poster used a word that he didn't know how to spell. Why didn't he look it up? The word is ABHORRENT, not ABHORANT.

Misspelled or not, you did understand what word he was trying to spell, right?

Therefore the amount of misinformation this caused was minor if any.

A post with every other word misspelled or lots of slang is far more likely to impede communication.

In that case, if someone is upset by minor errors does the fault then solely rest with the original writer or should the person reading take a second to understand his/her own reaction? Perhaps it is an over reaction and the fault rests on the one who refuses to attempt to understand something that is not perfect.

I suspect the condemnation of poor spelling and grammar are due to those who see no excuse for it since computers have spelling/grammar checkers. If one wishes to make a good first impression then perhaps it would be worth while to take a few extra minutes to compose the original email in word, use the spelling/grammar checker then copy and paste it to the recipient.

BINGO!!!!!  If they aren't willing to put for the simple effort of using spell check, how in the hell are they going to put forth enough effort to maintain a D/s relationship?

MissSCD -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/2/2008 7:01:02 AM)

Things are a bit different now than when I was in school.   Glances around the post.
We did not have spell check, grammer check, calculators, and all of the above to enhance our ability to write.
We did not use computers to teach us how to communicate.   We used books, pencils and paper.
For someone to judge how one uses a computer is simply insignificant in my opinion.
The spell check has never worked on my computer on this forum.
If that is how you judge me, then I really don't care.  I am going to be creative and go paint something.

Funny enough I had some guy on yahoo message me just tonight, with the sole purpose of calling me a bitchy fool because I had on my profile that people who write 'h r u' etc will be put in iggy.
I know i stuff up with punctuation etc. You'd think a writer would know that shit but I don't.
But I hate poor spelling, true we all have words that we mess up on, I know I do. But when its a common word that just smacks of stupidity to me, particularly if its repeated and not just a typo.

And it is language not languge. Why didn't YOU look it up?

That being said, an occasional typo I don't mind at all. I do it myself and I often mispell words I do not type alot even though I may use them alot in my verbal communication. So sue me.

I just cannot read a whole long email of grade school spelling errors or text type. U 2? etc. I also will ignore the whole slash type because that just tells me "internet fantasy wanker"

Far more important than anything else is content. If someone is going to write to me, only about kink, they will soon disappear from my happy little internet world.

The fact that I knew what he meant is no excuse.  If you don't know how to spell a word, look it up.  I cood spel stuf funeticly all day and youd no wut I meen, but it still cums off as ignorant.  If you want to use a word you're not sure of, look it up.

slavekal -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/2/2008 8:41:57 AM)

That was a late night typo, not a true misspelling.  I know it's LANGUAGE.  By the time I noticed it, it was too late to correct it.  Why does the EDIT option disappear?
