And yet the writer of those two paragraphs was Rene Descartes, in his discourse on the method of rightly conducting the reason and seeking truth in the sciences.  He originally wrote them in French.  To emulate profound thought by someone for whom English is not their native language, I translated them into English using babelfish.

Last I checked, Descartes isn't here on this site, sending emails to dominant women.  And if he is.....well, if he writes like an incomprehensible twit, his mail will go in the circular file along with the rest of the useless gits who I can't make sense of (or don't care to.)  My world, my rules :-)

MsRose -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/5/2008 9:15:46 PM)

I used to feel offended by anyone who butchered the English language in their correspondence to me (being 1. English and 2. an English Comprehension major, I was rather sensitive). Now I'm a little more compassionate toward those for whom English is not their first language. That's one caveat. If I were trying to write to someone in Italian, I'd be rather poor at it and would have to make a disclaimer about my mistakes.

I can understand how mistakes are made. We are all human after all. But to make little or no effort to compose an intelligable sentence? That triggers me.

slavekal -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/6/2008 8:22:38 AM)

I have known a lot of people whose native language was not English who had much better grammar than many Americans.  There is no excuse to be non-lingual.

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/6/2008 8:38:27 AM)

Just a note here - it's not just Dommes who are put off by sloppy English. I am not referring to poor grammar and word usage by those for whom English is a second language, but to just plain sloppy use of one's native tongue.

Textspeak, as I've seen it called, is fine for text messaging, but if you're sitting at a computer keyboard, take the time to do it right.

If you're after a relationship with me, no matter the nature of that relationship, I lose respect for you if your English is not passable. I don't ask for impeccable, but at least make it understandable!

Grammar=Intelligence

I noticed alot of reponses from people who equate the two.If the grammar, punction and spelling are poor, the person is illiterate.

Awfully presumptuous of you.

Give me a break.True some responses are ill conceived and poorly structured, but a little leeway should be exercised.

Has it come some of the people's attention there are brilliant people, but are poor at English.Surprise,surprise. I'm famaliar with a university math professor who admits his weakness, grammar, but he is superb in math.I'm not the greatest in English either,I'm a math nerd, love calculus, but that doesn't make me any smarter or dumber than anyone else.

No one said it did.

The condemnation I see is abhorant and all too famaliar. One of my favorite authors is William Faulkner, a great in the literature world.I haven't seen anyone on these posts come close to his mastery of writing, but these same people are the biggest critics of English structure.

I feel that some of the subs should be given a chance to impress and show some of their other fine qualities and strengths.

All are give a chance to impress. However, if you squander that chance, who is really to blame? It's a button. Click on it and see what happens.

MadameCris -> RE: Reply to Falcon and Everyone. (1/18/2008 12:28:18 AM)

Bad grammer, spelling, or other faux paus, indicate to a Domme that the sub is careless, uneducated, or lazy about his communication. It communicates a lack of concern for the person who will receive (and decode) the message.

I do give allowances for those that speak more than one language because often, english is their 2nd language and therefore, they are bound to make occasional mistakes.

(disclaimer: i'm dyslexic and didn't spell check this because it's way past my bedtime)

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/18/2008 9:05:02 AM)

Goodness! Reading this thread from the beginning to the end is an exercise in futility: each time I think I'm on the last page, another page appears.

In my profile I state that I am a "language nerd." I do believe that the rules of grammar can be relaxed somewhat in informal settings. I don't correct anyone's grammar or spelling until I know them well enough to be sure I won't offend them by doing so. But (and Strunk and White said it was OK to start a sentence this way) that does not mean that I haven't noticed the "infraction." Given my preference for clear communication, I expect someone contacting me for a possible relationship to honor my preferences.

I use adaptive software on my computer to assist me in reading text. This software is not able to interpret textspeak, slashspeak, and misspelled words. This becomes confusing and frustrating. Granted, this is a specific and probably uncommon reason for desiring good spelling and grammar, but there it is.

Dnomyar -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/18/2008 12:16:04 PM)

Mmmm I do not spell very good and have a lot of run on sentences. But I do not have to go begging for subs like a lot of english majors on here do.  Have any of you ever given a sub/slave a spelling test or have them given one to you? Snickers at the bunch of you.

And yet, you don't have one of your own, nor can I recall you ever having one during your tenure here.  Yeah, things seem to be working out very well for you.

Articulation is a MUST for me.I do understand  shortening words for sake of limiting time or words is acceptable in some cases. In my job, I do require if you are with me to carry a conversation without embrassement to me. If you can speak to me online with good grammar, then  I have knowledge you can speak well.   I dont always talk the talk==I make the attempt. Since I'm the Domme  in this piece--I want what I want.

MzStripes -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/25/2008 9:44:06 PM)

As a Domme, it is the first impression from a submissive. If they are sloppy with their message - spelling & grammar errors it leads me to believe their submission would have the same quality. Does this mean I dismiss someone if they have a simple error? No, I take it all into consideration when making a decision.

And sammiebabygirl:  You can lead a horse to water...but you can't make him drink. He probably wouldn't get the point.

KnOcala -> RE: Why Dommes judge people based on grammar? (1/25/2008 11:34:08 PM)

I understand the desire for good grammer when contacting a mistress.  I always try to be careful typing a letter to anyone and of course occasionally a mistake will get through.  I beleive most people are not english teachers looking for proper grammer but to see that you are halfway intelligent and have shown some respect to make an effort to form a legible letter.
Now once I get chatting, typing quick responses and without my reading glasses, stand by, I have a tendancy to make more mistakes.
I really believe if you take a little time and show a littel respect most people will accept a few mistakes here and there.
