Obama, projected winner. Can someone explain in teensy words to me, why such an archaic system such as the Iowa Caucus is the major turning point? Why is is blind with the Reps and up front seen with the Dems? Why do the Dems get to try and sway people when they've not the 15%? I do not get a single part of the procedure.According (to much earlier in the day) a CNN poll 71% did not understand it. It is nice to have company in my confusion. ~le sigh, caucus conundrum, completely confuzzled.

Looks like the fundie christian kooks have come out in full force to try to get a baptist preacher in the White House.

As for the Democrats...I couldn't be happier that Hillary lost.

       It really isn't, anymore.  The media makes a big deal, because they don't have anything else to talk about.  The results on Feb. 5 will erase any significance here tonight.  Rudy didn't even bother with Iowa.

Iowa has no real significance other than momentum. They are the first of 49 states (Kansas does not participate in the primaries). The only thing this does it tell people who won't be the nominee. Right now this was a major loss for Mitt Romney who spent a fortune in Iowa and now if he loses New Hampshire the losses could snowball on him. Huckabee's win helps both McCain and Guiliani in a strategic way.

As I recall, Kerry won Iowa, but then found his path much more difficult afterward... Iowa doesn't mean much, beyond they give a significant bounce to whoever the actual winner is. I'm watching MSNBC with Matthews and Oberman, and so far on the Dem side of things, it's a three way dead heat.... 32%, 33%, 33% with only about a third of the caucuses reporting in so far.

Statistically, you can't draw any conclusions from that. So close that even the <15% throw from non-viable candidates isn't going to have much of an effect on the final.

CNN has projected Obama as the winner with 37% with 85% reporting.
Clinton and Edwards are fighting for 2nd and have gone back and forth all night.

 Please please, no digs from anyone to anyone. This is my firstest ever political thread and I'd rather it be interesting.. not full of anger or emotion over any sort of past posting history. I began it because I wanted to learn more about something that's obscure [to me], and because it is going on right now. So can everyone play nicely?[:)]

Yes, I agree, things shouldn't degnerate to calling people who vote for somebody you don't like as "kooks" just for having beliefs that don't reflect yours.

I, for one, am happy Huckabee won and even happier that Clinton lost.  It makes things a little more interesting than six years ago(when the election started, I think :-p) when it was just supposed to come down to Hillary/Guiliani(It still may, of course)

It amazes me that it seems to take three years to select a candidate for a four year term in office.

Got back from the caucus about an hour ago. In my precinct Obama got 5 delegates, and Edwards 3. It was also hot, chaotic, and kinda fun.

Here's her take on the Iowa process:

The official season kicks off with a rite so arcane that even many of those participating don't understand it. The Iowa caucuses are like evening coffee klatsches with a serving of trigonometry. Those who show up at one of the state's 1,784 precincts huddle in various corners of the room depending on whom they're supporting. Then the folks in each "preference group" are counted and the math begins: multiplying that number by the number of delegates allotted to a precinct, then dividing by the number attending the caucus. Or at least I think that's right. Even veterans admit confusion, and tutorials are routinely offered. Keep that in mind when you hear the deceptively straightforward news that a candidate won in Iowa.

He was a committed Southern Baptist (still is, I think) and a Sunday School teacher. I don't think he was actually a preacher, though.

I thought Jimmy Carter was a Methodist.
Both Hillary and Mitt need to win in N.H. or they're in trouble especially Hillary comming off a third place finish.
If she doesn't come in in first place in N.H. her candidacy is effectively over.
She's not well liked in the South and S. Carolina is next after N.H.
I think Mitt can come in second in N.H. and still keep going though.
Edwards made the best speech after the caucus by far!
He'll start to pick up momentum in S. Carolina and the other Southern states. He may even take N.H.

 The real significance,is that twice as many Iowans voted in the Democratic caucuses,than in the GOP caucuses.The Dems got almost all the independents, going to their caucuses.Which bodes well, for the Dems.

I`m mused a bit,that the GOP leadership,plus all the rightwing wackos,like Ann Coulter,are dissing Huckabee and trying to kill/fight/ignore his campaign.

I heard Coulter say today,that everyone wants Huckabee,b/c Bill Clinton said he liked him.lol.  I wonder how the Huckavites feel about that comment.

Maybe it was Chuck Norris,and not Bill Clinton,that did it for Huckabee.
