greetings sam,

i agree - i would not vote for him because he's black, i would vote for him because he's the only candidate with a chance of winning that i can still vote for and look at myself in the mirror, you know?

but on the subject of "white candidates" - that's what gets me. a candidate who is a "white candidate" or a "female candidate" or a "black candidate" is theoretically supposed to be about advancing their own race above and beyond others. i realize this is idealistic and obviously perceptions of this will vary depending on people's varying level of cynicism regarding public office, but i like to think, regardless of the fact that our presidents have all been white christian men, and the real honesty of it is our next president probably will be, too, that they are in office to serve people who may not be white, christian, or male (that's one of the things that worries me when i read about huckabee and romney and some other candidates, as a person who is not christian - i worry about what life will be like for those who do not fit in their demographics). the same goes for a candidate who is non-white, non-christian, and female...and i don't think obama is in it just to serve black people anymore than i think ron paul is in it just to serve white people, or anything like that, i guess. and i get kind of upset because people say things to presume that obama is in it just to serve black people - whereas the same people would not imagine saying that about any of our white candidates today. and then people wonder why others think that racism is very much alive and well in this country.

just some thoughts. thanks for your response! :) hope you are having a good monday.

annabelle.

My point...
We happen to have a woman, a black male, a Morman, a Funamentalist Christian, a liberal disguising himself as a Republican, an ex-military prisoner of war, etc.  And then, of course, we have Ron Paul.
They are all American candidates for the American Presidency.  This country is already very divided and pointing out these things makes it more and more so.  I believe it was the 1960 Kennedy/Nixon election that first broke down the demographics of the vote to such a ridiculous extent, and we have never turned back.  When I walk out of the voting booth, if anyone asks Me who I voted for, I tell them it is none of their damn business.  It is private.
I do not agree with Barak Obama's general stance on issues, and I agree with the pont that it is very hard to get anything specific from him.  From what I have been able to see, he has worked to position himself very middle of the road and does not take a strong stance on issues.  Apparently that is working for him.
But I do appreciate the fact that he is not running as a "black" candidate.  Because it should not be about race.  And, at least he is making that effort.
If we can get to that point, that they are simple candidates, maybe we can start dealing with issues rather than special interests and get somewhere.  Until then...*Sigh*
I thought Colin Powell could have been a shoo-in too...

...i think that speech he was told to give the UN regarding WMD's broke his heart for politics......

One of many travesties of the Bush administration...To let a man of honor swing for a reckless and unwarranted agenda.  It is a true tragedy.

I found it amazing how easily people let his resignation go by without barely a word being spoke about how this man's reputation was so easily sacrificed.  Cocksuckers each and everyone of 'em.

Popeye: Oh my God it's the Mexicans....Oh my God it's the Mexicans....

One track mind, deluded by the new 15 minutes....I find it amazing how easily people will allow themselves to be diverted from the serious problems that this country is facing....

Look it's an illegal homosexual Mexican trying to get married.  Hide the kid's eyes.

Sure........Like I am gonna listen to the black guy on a sensative topic like this.

Jeff

African American?

FR:  While I would like to believe our country is making progress on issues of race, I think it's difficult to tell what effect if any his race has to do with this election.  There are so many people that want to distance themselves from Hillary and anyone even remotely involved with the current administration, Obama may be leading by default.

As though he weren't complicit in his own sacrifice?  I don't recall seeing anyone holding a gun to his head during his speech at the UN.

That has been typical of the past 7 years.the tragedy is not just that it happend, but that to many people are going along with their own demise

The problem with Obama is that he's not black enough for me.
I'd put him in the Jesse Jackson camp for blackness.
I STILL hope Al Sharpton runs.

You know, I suspect that people are going to say that a person of different ethnicity than Caucasion can't win an election till it happens.  Look at Kennedy- before he was elected, people said that a Catholic would never become president.  I find Obama to be most similar to Kennedy's political message- I hope he's the 21st century's version of Kennedy, because we sure need one.  My fear is that he'd turn into Jimmy Carter- an honest man who failed at the necessities of political compromise.

From my perspective-people don't have any choices about the genes they've been handed- they have much more choice over religion.  While there are some deep seated prejudices against darker skinned folks that may be hard wired (humans are afraid of the dark) I hope that our intellect is powerful enough to overcome these irrational fears.  There's lots of genetic diversity in darker skinned folks, more so than in Caucasians.  Thus, making sweeping generalizations based on race is inaccurate- the amount of melanin in the skin is not a good indicator of anything.  Note that to a geneticist- race is largely useless.  (OK, Asians have a smaller genetic pool and are more likely to be interrelated than either Caucasians or Africans.)  So if not now- when?  But yeah, I was surprised at the results of the Iowa caucus.  Obama in my perception went from not being electable due to the race card, to being electable- I've sold my fellow citizens short.  I think race may be a red herring in this election.

Sam

I think Obama has found the magic way to reach out to everyone.  I don't think we're colorblind because of this country's history.  But, I think that there are so many opportunities to become whatever you want in this country for people of all races and for women.  Perhaps people question a woman or non-white as president, eventhough they have every qualification in the book because the spot has never been held by one.  But that's what they felt when women didn't hold positions of power yet 30 years ago, people wonder if it can actually be done because it's never been done.  Just like the first man walking on the moon.  Who knew that it was safe?  Everything in the book said it was safe to walk on the moon, but people were still leary because it's never been done.  That's analagous to a black man as president.  It's never been done.  I think the Iowa caucus shows that it can happen, eventhough its something new that people would be questioning about.  In my opinion, there's no better time for a black or woman candidate to be president than now.  Race, sex, or whatever, the climate is ripe, and in this day and age of our world becoming such a smaller place, is seems to make sense that this would be possible.  I also like that the candidates don't bring up whiney things like race or sex, but see and look towards what's best for the United States, the country that made it possible for them to run for President.
