DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."

After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone -- by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.

"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady."'

The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.

Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week -- just for the feedback.

Damn... I would hate to be that kid. Seems a bit extreme if she believes him that someone else left it but I guess if it was in the car he had been partaking at some point. Not always the case but I guess that is most likely.

Yeah, see, no... my mom is the Meanest Mom in the World. Just ask my eleven year old sister who snuck into my room and stole my condoms and dildo while I was staying with my mother over the summer to help her with her new baby. She handed the condoms out to her friends and when she got busted and my mother told me, I went through my room and found out my dildo was missing.

Of course, my sister also has the, "Meanest Sisters in the World," and the, "Meanest Brother in the World," and the, "Meanest Grandparents in the World." None of us are ever going to let her live it down.

She's also grounded for an undetermined period of time, which she just keeps adding to by taking other things that don't belong here...

On a related note, does anyone know of any good military schools for juvenile delinquents? Especially kleptomaniacs...

Well, at least that will teach the kid the much needed lesson of public humiliation as an educational tool. Plus, it will give him a great way to develop sensibly, dealing with responsible use of alcohol.

I mean, as anyone who has ever signed a contract can tell you, if the rule is no booze, that can get enforced. But seriously, unless this kid has a history of alcoholism or drunk driving, it's a pretty drastic measure.

I don't advocate underage drinking, but I do advocate an early exposure to vice so the kid learns to deal with it, not fear it.

Oh this happened in Iowa ? Hell believe it ? Now I think we got less than half the story.

Milking cows on prom night comes to mind.

I got a family member who will never be allowed to drive in Iowa, and this is a fine upstanding pillar of the community, not like me.

Anyway, that notwithstanding, Meanest Mom has my kudos. First of all the kid got stopped, there must have been a reason. The booze ? It doesn't matter, it is still the kid's responsibility who gets in that car. And nobody with a half a brain would never think a kid of early driving age, or any of their friends would ever abandon a bottle of booze. What are you crazy ? We used to take hostages to get people to go to the liquor store.

Meanest Mom gets my vote for President. Get this straight, I drink, but I don't drive. I know how, and I am not saying I never will drive, but I know better than to do it with booze. I drink, but a teenager is an inexperienced driver, and probably goes too fast, and doesn't yet know about certain "shit" happening. Add to that a cellphone in their ear and all you need is a little bit of booze for a hell of a night.

I guess my Mom was nice. She did say "Quit driving like a fucking animal" but she did not sell the car out from under me. But things are different now. What happened then was appropriate for those times, Meanest Mom was appropriate for now.

Master and luna teach their ums that the most important thing left on this earth is your word. Without it you have no meaning. Honor is everything. If my um gives me his word that he will have no booze in his car then this girl doesn't care if the bottle is his friend's or if an alien left it - it shouldn't have been there at all. you broke your word, bye bye car. now luna doesn't approve of prohibition so its not the booze itself that would bother luna - if they had been inside and behaving there would have been no problem. but luna has a HUGE issue with booze/drinking and driving. so yea, luna thinks Mean Mom is pretty awesome!

oh, btw, benji's back!!!! benji's back!!!!! (sorry if luna is just realizing it benji - been a bit out of it with the pregnancy!)

I don't see a problem with taking the car away, even selling it.

I am confused about something though, if it is uncool to advertise the faults of others in our personal relationships, why is it becomming ok for parents to do so to their kids?

Seems overkill if she believes he didn't do it, and what would it matter if he locked the door and still gave the friend who left the bottle a lift?

Plus publicly humiliating him is really going to foster a strong relationship. (Sarcasm).

lol i LOVED this story myself! She bought the car, she made the rules. He broke the rules, she took away the car! At 19 years old, he can damn well go and buy his own car, and make up his own rules. There are consequences for breaking rules, as he found out.

sorry, but the meanest Mom on the planet award doesn't go to the Iowa Mom Who OverIndulged an Adult Offspring and is crowing about putting him in his place because the overindulged turned out to be irresponsible. At 19, shouldn't he already know consequences for breaking rules?

Meanest Mom on the PLanet award, in this slave's opinion, would have to go to the one who didn't teach them to drive, didn't take them to get their license at 16, didn't provide a potentially deadly weapon(car) and the expensive insurance that goes along with it like it is some sort of "right" for all youth.

Instead, she preached to them incessantly that their generation needs to conserve fuel, work on coming up with alternative energy/transportation sources, carpool and use public transportation, ESPECIALLY when they are in the group that cause the most accidents---males under 25.

It is this Meanest Mom ITW's opinion that adult offspring should act like it, and take responsibility for their own transportation needs, not expect or rely on Mom to reward/punish them indefinitely, as if they are stuck in a 2 y/o mindset, just beginning to learn consequences of actions.

Then he went on to tell me that he instantly thought of me when he read it and rattled off a few incidents from his checkered past where there were similar repercussions. Though, none of them involved a newsprint add. Yes, I am just as mean as she.

Oh, and by the way, I am very very close to both of my adult children. My son, who suffered the worst punishments because he was the worst violator, is an awsome young man and a fantastic father. Parenting in much the same style as I did with he, and his sister.

Just thought of one more thing..... I refused to buy either of my children a car. I bought them bicycles. They had to work, save, and buy their own cars if they wanted one.

To everyone who made their kid buy their own car... no kidding! My parents made me get mine, and because I slaved (har har) two summers in a row in order to get myself something that wasn't a total piece of junk, I followed the rules and never did anything that could put myself or the vehicle that I earned with my hard work and sweat in jepoardy.

Because of that, the decent car I've had for two years and bought for $6000 is now getting sold for $4000 and I'm going to have a nice down payment for an even nicer vehicle now that I am older and have the means to get a loan. I don't plan on going overboard... maybe just a couple years newer, less miles, and better gas mileage. After all the only reason I even decided to sell was because it was cheaper and less of a hassle than trying to bring a car from the lower 48 to Alaska.

So what came out of me busting my ass for my own vehicle? Because of the fact that I was determined to take care of what I worked for, I still have a large part of the original investment, I haven't damaged my driving record with tickets or accidents, and I haven't put my own life and health at risk.

I hated it at the time, but I am glad my parents were too mean to help me buy my car.
