LadyEllen -> 666 - Disestablishment of the Church of England (1/10/2008 11:42:39 AM)

Channel 4 just reported this

apparently a paper has been submitted in Parliament for the disestablishment of the Church of England - and quite by chance, the number it got in the running order was 666.

A sign? an omen? Or just a coincidence to what would be a great idea?

E

that would certainly be most interesting Lady Ellen. and the number on the documentation being 666,my humourous side is laughing about that. but on the religious side of me,seeing as i have studied under a friend of mine who lives in England who is a druid, I would be curious if you could post on the progression of this.

Lady E, 666 is just too funny. I'd also like to know of the progression of this bill. Odd, no matter how many times people are told that 666 actually translates from the old Greek text to ''Nero Caesar'' who was believed to be the anti-Christ of the day, they will still translate it as the mark of Satan. It's just one of those things that stuck and won't let go.

Please keep us...um....posted?

Are you implying that you don't believe in antidisestablishmentarianism?

Sounds like some religious clerk or whoever numbers them probably put it in that spot.  Or perhaps an athiest with a sense of humor.

Would it be any wierder if the number was 69? [:D] or maybe 420? [:D]

IvyMorgan -> RE: 666 - Disestablishment of the Church of England (1/10/2008 2:52:35 PM)

Or 616?

(Some other theology geek can explain)

MasterKalif -> RE: 666 - Disestablishment of the Church of England (1/10/2008 7:02:05 PM)

What  shame LadyEllen! The UK is losing its historical traditions one by one, where one day the British will wake up and realize they are no different than the USA and other countries, having lost all its peculiar centuries old British tradition that set it aside from other nations in the world. This is something that was established if I am not mistaken, before king Henry VIII. Maybe next they won't allow the Queen to open the session of Parliament? Awful!

Vendaval -> RE: 666 - Disestablishment of the Church of England (1/10/2008 9:36:26 PM)

Maybe some of the Parliament clerks thought this would make a good joke?

TheHeretic -> RE: 666 - Disestablishment of the Church of England (1/10/2008 9:40:30 PM)

Pure coincidence.  Didn't you Brits have some sort of big fire in 1666?

Hi All

Well, its something that interests me to be fair - my view is that the CofE as part of the State is an anachronism if we truly are living in the much famed "multi cultural society" (calm down Seeks!) - in fact its link to the State and the presence of its bishops in Parliament must end if we are to hold that "all faiths are equal" (or similar).

If we truly do live in a multi-cultural society where all religions are equal then we should have either representatives of all religions (and I mean all - including pagan/heathen reps, JWs and Mormons - and Jedis since the last census showed a large contingent here) or representatives of none. I'll be looking out for any updates on it and will be sure to report if I hear anything.

E

Well LadyE I hope you heard the PM programme report tonight (Fri I think) lol
Bangladeshi youths attacked a white group with bottles machetes etc and hurled racial abuse etc etc etc
When a Bishop announced that there exist no go areas "controlled" by Muslim youths all the self appointed Islamic spokespersons denied it.
I bet not many whites venture on that estate after dark.

Honour killing. Coronor reported that a young Asian girl had been the victim of an honour killing. Her family accused the police of racial stereotyping during investigations into the incident.
Police Officer gave a grovelling apologetic interview on the BBC saying that all the info. that he had led back to the family  but he was really very sorry and realised how difficult it must be for all concerned etc etc etc
Feel their collars my son, leave the social work to others.

And so it goes on !!!

Just a few sticks set alight to warm a few hands - no harm was done; everyone appreciated the warmth.

IvyMorgan -> RE: 666 - Disestablishment of the Church of England (1/11/2008 2:30:29 PM)

It did sort of stop the spread of the plague, which was probably a good thing.

And the CofE was established by Henry VIII, partly cos he wanted a divorce fom Catherine of Aragon, partly cos he quite liked the idea of not sending lots of money to Rome all the time, and partly cos, well, redistributing the wealth of the monastries/abbies/convents/devout Catholics was a great way to win supporters and purge those he was less fond of.  It doesn't pre-date him, Kalif.

LadyE, there are Sikhs and Rabbis and Immams and some Hindu priests in Parliament.  Not as many as their are Bishops though.  But, the number of Bishops who automatically got a seat was reduced by Blair during the rejig of the Lords and hereditary peerages etc.
