Houses with metal boxes built into the wall next to the door for deliveries from the milkman and the bread man.
Houses with coal chutes leading from the driveway down to the basement.
Racing slot cars at the hobby shop.
Plugging the storm drains on a rainy day and riding our bikes through the flooded intersection over and over again.
Overhauling the crank and hub bearings on our bikes the next day.
Putting my ear against the metal box on a pole at an intersection to hear the sound of the traffic light changing.
Playing  behind a factory in puddles full of "rainbow water".
Sneaking into abandoned houses to get the mercury capsules from the thermostats.
Playing with mercury.
Digging a real deep hole in the yard because we wanted to see how close to Hell we could get.
Me and my little friends asking my mom which way to Disneyland and wondering how long it would take to walk there so we could be with Annette.
Annette
Walt Disney introducing his show.
Micky Mouse ears.
Buying a brand new TransAm for $5,150.
Seeing acts like Cream, Hendrix, the Yardbirds, Zep, Tull, and Traffic for...I dunno...5 bucks?
Thinking 5 bucks was a lot of money.

I kept my black rotary till about ten years ago. If I had a second jack in the apartment, I'd get another rotary. Wouldn't it be great if someone made a rotary cellphone. You could have a wee stylus for dialing.

Google "rotary cell phone", dc [;)]

She always came back for more though, she must have liked the squishy cold feel.

The next year my father did not grow tomatoes, but cucumbers, and before your mind thinks, I was not mature enough at that time to know what to do with my father's prize cucumber.(I remember, a good twelve inches and at the time , I could not get my hand around)I was only ten.

MasterKalif -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/12/2008 3:38:57 PM)

I remember in the early 80's in Chile (where I am originally from) there were only 4 channels, no cable, we had one VHS (vcr), one old sony tv triniton color, and I remember all kids went to bed when the "angel" cartoon representing the Catholic channel would come on wishing goodnight, of which an action film would come on later. I remember playing in the streets until night time, knowing 90% of my neighbors, hearing my neighbors discuss or complain about the Military government in power at the time, over barbecues, etc.

I remember when my father bought an American car, a Cadillac Malibu, 1985, blue exterior and blue interior, was a beautiful car. I remember the heat to defrost the windows didn't work well so my mother would pour hot water from a kettle to "defrost" the windshield...LOL.

Do you guys remember "Kojac" on tv? I believe he was Greek-American...

Kojak, I think. And yes, I do remember. Telly Savalas, who played him, had given up smoking, so they worked into the script that Kojak sucked a lot of lollipops.

Who loves ya, baby?

What a privelege to choose to remember the good things and laugh at the good times again . .. and to laugh with others and say to our selves " I hadnt thought of that in years"....and yes to be able to pretty much know the posters age by the memories lol.... lots are remembering things I bought my sons ... but its ok for its still wonderful memories ... a great thread with no flameing just a coming together of shareing of good memories and gentler times that made all of us who and what we are today.  We all know there were bad times and things out there during all of this .. but can put those aside for a while... and smile ... what a concept... and to all of you posters ... " thanks for the memories"

Exactly, MissH!  Why talk about the bad when we can remember the good things in life that make us smile...if only for a little while??

Now, someone help me please. There was a toy, it was plastic, one end was round that you stuck your foot in and attached was a plastic bendy stick and at the end of that stick, i believe, was a ball, about the size of a tennis ball. Object of the toy, sticking your foot in the round part, making it go in a circle and you jumping over the stick part. Anyone remember that?

my friends & i would put aluminum foil on our teeth to pretend we had braces [:)]

Fun Dip!  So much better than Pixie Sticks!
Being able to go outside to play all day in the woods behind my house and Mom not having to worry about where I was or if someone had stolen me.  (Definitely more poignant now that I have a son.)
Super Nintendo being the newest, coolest gaming system on the market.
Not being plunked in front of a television the entire day.
Catching fireflies in a jar and trying to feed them grass.  I suppose now that's unethical.
Having a neighborhood where we knew all of our neighbors and were friends with them.

Edited to add:  I suppose the thing I miss most about my childhood was that indomitable sense of the world being my oyster, of endless possibility.  Wonders are possible when you're a child.  I also miss that undeniable sense of safety and love that I was lucky enough to get from my parents and relatives.  Mommy and Daddy would always make everything better.  Once the world hits you full force, it's impossible to carry those things with you.  I'm lucky enough to have people who love me dearly and to realize that I'm lucky, so I'm still able to carry some small piece of those things with me even now, and I try to share it with my son.  I want him to be able to hang on to those beautiful traits as long as possible.

Honestly, I miss feeling that safe and taken care of, and I miss that boundless hope and imagination.  I'm just lucky that I get to relive them through my little guy.
