Penny candy.
Coke in a bottle.
Super clackers.
Slinkies.
Mr. Potatohead.
Getting up at dawn to play outside...barefooted I might add, and then throwing a fit because mom or dad had to drag me in at dark.
Bikes with one gear.
Hanging laundry out on the clothesline because no one in town owned a dryer.
Sun tea.

I know I can think of a lot more but those are the first that came to my mind. A lot of very good memories of when I was a kid.=]

Mr. Potatohead.

The original - where you had to supply the potato.

Those wonderful VW Bug ads on TV
S & H Green Stamps - got 'em at every grocery store and gas station

A lot of what I remember from my childhood was new then, but has come back into fashion again, like Hula Hoops.

MissMorrigan -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/11/2008 8:54:09 AM)

As a child it was typical (during holidays) to spend literally all day/evening outdoors with friends, even when I was as young as 8. I had no fear of people, I knew that I, and my friends, were safe.

I also remember being able to go to the corner shop and get my grandad's beer as it was still legal.

I haven't had a jamboree bag or a jubbly (did I spell that correctly) since I was 10.

What happened to the Pogo Stick?

And pea soup fog?

popeye1250 -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/11/2008 9:20:28 AM)

I was born in 1950.
One of my earliest childhood memories is being in my bed one night and hearing "wooooo, woooooo" in the distance.
I got scared and went out into the kitchen and told my mother and she said that it was only a "choo choo train."
The train tracks going from Boston up to Lowell, Mass were about a half mile away and you could hear the steam locomotive at night in the distance, "woooooo, WOOO-OOOoooooooooo!"
Very haunting and very beautiful!
Too bad most people don't know that sound these days.
And of course we had metal ice cube trays and an ice box.
And."party lines" on the telephone so you could pick up the phone and hear other people talking.
And of course a milkman who recently died and I found out through his obituary was a highly decorated ww2 veteran.
He was a glider pilot with the 82nd Airbourne.

carlie310 -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/11/2008 9:24:09 AM)

Gave one of my UMs a pogo stick for Christmas!  Of course, she wears a helmet.  (Not by law, but because she's likely to end up in the ER if not.)

The old VW, with the motor in the rear.  That floated.

In high school, piling twice as many kids in the car as would be legal today. . .sitting on someone's lap, squashed against another, someone copping a feel. . .not being able to figure out who or even if it was intentional.

I remember when summer was in, going to the pool and hanging out from before noon, until it was dark, and no one worried, there were no cell phones to call, and your parents knew, sooner or later, you would get hungry or tired and come home.
I remember old rotary phones, that the ear piece unscrewed and you could hide your money or whatever in there, from your parents, mostly, lol
I remember when the VCR came out, replacing the beta, and it was the coolest thing, with the long wire, running from the machine to the remote, but it was cool, cuz it was a remote, lol
I also remember the best music, The Police, The Who, Wham!, The Cars, and Depeche Mode, just to name a few!
I remember that Video Killed the Radio Star, was the first music video played when the music TV station debuted.

ItalianM, you like The Cars eh?
One of my best friends growing up in Woburn, Mass was Dave Robinson who went on to become the drummer for The Cars.
His mother was from England and anytime a British Warship pulled into Boston she'd have a bunch of the Sailors over to the house for a party.

i cried too!  i lay in my uncle's basement for hours listening to "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues when Freddie Prinze killed himself!  Sorry about putting the BC Rollers "Sat Night" in your head.  i just knew someone would post that accusation! Hopefully the "Nights in White Satin" replaced it?  But just in case......................

Keep on dancin to the Rock and Roll,
On Saturday Night, Saturday Night.
Dancin to the Rhythm with a Heart and Soul,
On Saturday Night, Saturday Night.

I-I-I-I just can't wait,
I-I-I-I gotta date.

At the good ol' Rock and Roll,
folk show, I've gotta go!
Saturday Night, Saturday Night
Gonna rock it up, hold it up,
do it all, have a ball
Saturday Night, Saturday Night.

S-S-S-Saturday Night(x3)

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night! (x4)

Gonna dance with my baby till the night is through,
On Saturday Night, Saturday Night.
Tell her all the little things I'm gonna do,
On Saturday Night, Saturday Night.

I-I-I-I'm love her so,
I-I-I-I'm gonna let her know.

At the good ol' Rock and Roll,
hope show, I've gotta go!
Saturday Night, Saturday Night
Gonna rock it up, hold it up,
do it all, have a ball
Saturday Night, Saturday Night.

Yes, i do remember Spiro Agnew. i cried like a baby when Nixon resigned! lol, didn't know why, just the fact that he was crying made me cry!

Once upon a time, there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours,
Think of all the great things we would do

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

I recently found a real cardboard origonal ticket to "A Hard Day's Night"!!!!

You knew you were growing up when you were taken to a real Ladies Hat Store to select your first hat.
