Come on that's like saying video games make people violent or people wouldn't kill without guns or bdsm makes people violent.  Religion wasn't the cause, the guy obviously lost it.

Naw, that's like saying people who torture small animals are more likely to become murders or BDSM makes people more likely to enjoy even more hardcore kinky sex.  (The examples you provided were of similar things, not different magnitudes of the same thing.)

If this guy honestly believes in the Bible- which plainly says the bit about the mark of the beast- and in the idea that he must please God to get into it.. isn't he just being a great Christian in being willing to give up his own hand to avoid God's displeasure and wrath?  Hell, he went so far as to try to destroy the hand afterwards to ensure that it wouldn't displease God any further.

Yeah, it's crazy, but so is Heaven, Hell, God, angels, spirits, souls, ghosts, demons, the devil, voices in someone's head, talking to one's self (praying), thinking invisible things are watching you, etc.  It's all very crazy.  He just happened to take more stock in it.

Unlike the majority of non-practicing, bovine pseudochristians -- frozen-burrito devouring, Wal-Mart shopping, unreflective, thirty minutes or less, instant-gratification seeking hypocrites -- this brave man broke through the barrier of lukewarm American life and made a REAL CHOICE..................the choice to avoid sin and live according to the dictates of his conscience.

Kudos to this fellow.

Exactly!

Come on guys, this isn't choice, devotion or bravery. It is mental illness.

How do you think I feel when I see people talking to themselves, claiming that magical invisible beings are listening to them?

..and would you be so admiring if, instead of a self harming delusion, this man had considered his neighbour to have the 'mark of the beast' and had hacked him up instead? In such a case he would be living 'according to the dictates of his conscience' after all.......

CuriousLord -> RE: Man cuts off, microwaves own hand (1/10/2008 10:32:28 PM)

And what if he was right?  What if there was really a God, what if there was really a mark of the beast, and what if he just saved his neighbor's soul?

MissMagnolia -> RE: Man cuts off, microwaves own hand (1/10/2008 10:34:37 PM)

It depends on whether the neighbour is a decent one, or one of those who plays loud music till 3 am.

And those voices in my head ARE real.[sm=mrpuffy.gif]

Now there, in a nutshell, is the history of the tyranny of the Abrahamic religions and the belief that the afterlifeis more important than this one (assuming there is an afterlife, of course). Two millennia of misery and mayhem.

Wherever belief in the hereafter reigns, terror ensues.

CuriousLord -> RE: Man cuts off, microwaves own hand (1/10/2008 10:41:23 PM)

I just hope no belief comes to reign.  No more religions, no more madness.

Owner59 -> RE: Man cuts off, microwaves own hand (1/10/2008 11:02:32 PM)

It`s one thing to cut the damm thing off.wowfft!

But what`s up with the microwaving?

And did it have a spining platter?

What a sight! oh my god..

CuriousLord -> RE: Man cuts off, microwaves own hand (1/10/2008 11:20:11 PM)

I'm guessing he saw the hand as evil, so he was trying to utterly destroy it.

Yeah, must've been a pretty freaky sight.  I'm wondering how he dressed the mutilated arm.. the sight must've been pretty messed up already.. all that blood all over.

Yeah, but...who's laughing now?!

bipolarber -> RE: Man cuts off, microwaves own hand (1/11/2008 5:19:02 AM)

What did it smell like? Cooking pork, I imagine. (There's a reason the East Islanders used to refer to white people as "long pig.") Yeah I can imagine it cooking... little popping noises coming from it as the skin bursts, the fingers looking like hot dogs that were split and puffy at the ends...

Thanks Stephen King!

It could be that more people commit more crimes, more hideous crimes, because they don't fear any god in an afterlife. I don't see where you can claim this as a victory when it's just one case out of billions and billions.

George Bush, claims he hears god talking to him.

Does that mean he`s crazy?

Impossible.

If this fine, dedicated fellow's resolve led him to emulate the life lessons of Christ, he CERTAINLY wouldn't have murdered anybody.  Call me a lazy reader, but  I can't really recall a part of the NEW TESTAMENT that included the Prince of Peace hacking up any Pharisees "Jason Vorhees" style with a chainsaw.  Maybe I skipped over a chapter or two.
