The reason california has an energy crisis is because they havnt built a power plant in that state in decades, yet the state has grown like crazy. The power grid is now obsolete. And the environmentalists would rather people sit in the dark than build another power plant.

Call me crazy, but this whole energy thing worked so much better before the Republicans and Libertarians pushed through their agenda to deregulate it in order to save everybody money.

Sinergy

p.s.  I paid 15 dollars a month for electricity that always ran before deregulation, now I pay 60 dollars a month for energy I cannot rely on now that the conservatives did their pavlov's dog impression at the behest of the corporate raider deregulationists.

p.p.s.  [sarcasm]  Thanks [/sarcasm]

p.p.p.s.  Perhaps in my next incarnation I will end up on a planet that has intelligent life forms on it.

For those playing the home game, California can only build power plants when they are in control of building power plants.  When the Republicans say it will all work better deregulated, and turn it over to corporate interests, this means that the control of building new plants is not under the control of the state.

Sinergy

p.s.  For those playing the home game, deregulation means that you have taken away your government's ability to "regulate" it or control it.  Taking control away and blaming them for not doing anything raises the definition of obtuse to a whole new level.

p.p.s.  I hope these concepts are working for all you reactionary, anti-government control, libertarian types.

For those that think this sort of thing won't happen, go take a look at toilets and shower heads.  You can't buy either item in this country legally that isn't low flow.  Thanks to politicians out west, we all are forced to take showers with no water pressure, and sometimes flush the toilet 2 or 3 times to get it empty.

Hate to say this, but in California we use low flow shower and toilets because we have limited water in our state, and a significant amount of the water we do have (that could otherwise be used to flush our crap) is used to grow food for the rest of you people.

Your state is using them is because the foreign companies who run things like Wal-Mart and Home Depot dont want to import two different items from Indonesia or China for different states, so they import the lowest common denominator that can be sold in the US and sell it everywhere.

Blaming this on something California did is profoundly obtuse.

Sinergy

p.s.  ok, that was mean.  I apologize on the part of the state of California for having to use a large amount of our water to feed the rest of you people, forcing you all to use low flow toilets.  I am more than happy to stop feeding you in order for you to use 4 gallons to flush your shit instead of 1.5.

Well Sinergy, you're wrong.  It's a federal law that mandates it, and that law was introduced by western congressmen because of your water shortages.  If you don't believe me, try driving across the Canadian or Mexican border with a "regular" toilet or shower head.  We have plenty of water here, and we have never needed to go to extrordinary lengths to conserve it.  We don't have to do that, because we don't build huge cities or farms in the middle of deserts.

By the way, California does not feed the entire country.  The overwhelming majority of the food grown in the U.S. is grown in the Midwest.  It won't really hurt my feelings if I don't get to eat avocados again.  Those of us in the middle of the country are more than happy to allow you to have pristine coast lines.  We will keep fueling your cars and your power at exorbitant rates.  Y'all can keep expanding your cities without a thought in the world towards public transportation.

All I know is that it gets pretty damn cold in the winter around here and if I want to ram the thermostat up to seventy or even seventy two then God damn it I will. I’m paying for it, so what fuck?

And now, just for fun, a little nose tweaking...

As for you Sinergy, waving your bear flag around, all I’ve got to say is this....

California sucks!

Your cheese sucks!

Your wine sucks!

Even your cabbage sucks!

We got Niagara Falls (well, half of it) while you got stuck with the San Andreas Fault. Good pick there. Enjoy your trip into the Pacific ocean. We were here before you so from New York.

Thanks, I was in a crabby mood and needed to grouse at somebody.

This shows your extreme ignorance of plate tectonics and how they work. California is on a strike/slip fault... it isn't falling off into anything...

Please don’t negate me by labeling me as extremely ignorant (to hoist you on your own petard – heh, heh, heh). Sheesh, can’t a person grouse around a little, play with stereotypes and common mis-perceptions (i.e. joke around) without having their intelligence being questioned? Nobody knows everything, so everyone is extremely ignorant of something. Not me in this case, however. I’m well aware that California isn’t going to fall into the sea (I got hushed in a movie theater for pointing that out at the beginning of Escape from L.A.) but rather is heading toward Alaska (better pick out your igloo – get ‘em while their cheap). Actually, we here in Western New York are sitting on our own large fault line – it’s just stable (relatively speaking). If it ever becomes unstable we are up the creek without a paddle because nothing here is built to withstand earthquakes (not even the earthquake research center at the University of Buffalo).

Oh yeah, California’s strawberries suck!

Does it feel good to be hateful?

Right after my Daddy and I got together we were at a Restaurant that was on a pier between San Diego and LA. It was mid summer, yet there was a slight chill in the air, but there were outdoors heaters so one could look out at the ocean and the waves crashing on to the shore. It was near sunset, the light was just right, and one could see a few surfers  doing there thing... a truly Golden California day. I said to him "How could anyone hate this state?" His response, "The reason they hate us is all around you, we have access to all of this." He gestured to the beach and the ocean... I knew he was right. You hate us because you are jealous. The reason people move here in droves (moreso than any other state mind you) is because they want a piece of the California dream.

I grew up near Yosemite National Park. I grew up near the redwoods and the Giant Sequoias. I loved my childhood, I love this state, and I have been to over a dozen others. There are things that I long to see other places... like the Fall in New England, but I have no desire to live in any other state. I have lived in two others... Oregon and Wyoming.... they just did not have what California offers.

I am a 4th generation Californian. My family homesteaded in what is now Yosemite. I have distinct pride in this state, and I think all people have pride in their homes. Why you and others insist on bashing us could only be because you hate your home and secretly long to live here, or you are just hateful... don't care which

And if your hateful comments are meant to be funny, someone needs to teach you about humor.

JEALOUS?

And you claim that Marc is "ignorant"?

Well, if "ignorant" fits some postings here, then "provincial" certainly fit others.

I don't think the NIMBY mentality regarding power plants or energy exploration is restricted to one party or philosophical bent. Coming from either agenda you can use the issue as  propaganda against the other and naive folks will believe it; especially those who only read from the bible supporting the side they're on.

In the case of Californian energy government didn't work, Enron didn't work. Since you can't use Californian's largest asset, 'undocumented workers', to generate power it will be an ongoing problem.

A voting plurality in California is compromised of a low income individuals needing a nanny to care for them, employees of the bureaucracy set up as the nanny, and a top 1% income level group feeling guilty for their wealth and assets who get to feel good about themselves by supporting wealth redistribution programs which would have little impact on them. But they do know how to exploit the media and get out the propaganda. And it sure does work. How else can people like Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi be seen as 'heroes' while they jet across the US in private jets.

Hey now Marc, you're talking about beth's home turf. Driving to her neck of the woods and I passed hundreds of miles of strawberries. They may suck by they time they get to the east coast - but getting them fresh here they can't be beat. Oh yeah - and I can get them today, picked by "undocumented workers", ripe and sweet! The strawberries NOT the workers, but, so inclined, I can get them too at the local Home Depot parking lot.

However if your comment was directed to Californian 'strawberry blonds'; I'd agree based upon personal experience - but that's a negative comment?

You misread what I posted.

If China wants to sell a low flow in the United States, they are not going to make a different one for California, a different one for Vancouver, Washington, a different one for Florida, and a different one for Iowa.

Sinergy

p.s. What is the federal code number you are referring to that mandates shower heads and low flow toilets?  I would like to look it up and see which congressmen voted for it.

p.p.s.  I am curious about your statistics about food production in Iowa and food production in California.  It doesnt really matter, if you sawed off California from the rest of the United States you would end up with the 7th largest economy on the planet.  I doubt the same could be said for Iowa.

p.p.p.s.  I am also curious why you would promote wasting water.  Seems to me that there were all sorts of problems with people wasting fossil fuels until somebody realized it was a limited resource.

Sinergy, don't ask me for the "federal code number."  The information is easily found, if you want to look it up.  It's covered under the Federal Energy Policy of 1992.  Here is an article from 2 years ago that discusses the issue:  http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1556933/posts?page=53

You may note from the article that the Chinese are not the only people that make shower heads and toilets.  So, you're wrong about that too.  It may surprise you, but not all of us here in the middle of the country do the entirety of our shopping at Wal-Mart.

Iowa is not the only state in the Midwest or in the South.  I don't need to show you statistics.  Everyone knows where most of the nation's food comes from.  The Midwest and southern states produce most of the staples, ie grain.  My own state is the largest producer of rice in the country, and we are only one state.  California can't feed it's entire population by itself, and you know it.  It is ludicrous to make that tired old claim about California having the 7th largest economy.

California could not maintain that economy if it broke off from the rest of the nation.  If you want to know what pisses the rest of us off about California, I will tell you.  I don't hate California, nor am I jealous.  I think it's a beautiful state.  But y'all want to maintain your lifestyles without chipping in.  Y'all use more gasoline than then the rest of us, but you refuse to allow off shore drilling.  Y'all use more water than most of us, and you take water from other states.  But, you try to ram your water conservation down the rest of our throats.

I am not promoting the wasting of water.  I simply want to take a shower that I used to be able to take.  Do you remember those old showers?  I want to own a toilet that functions effectively; there is nothing effective or efficient about having to flush a toilet 2 or 3 times.

If you really want to take a shower that bad without a low flow aerator, let me know what you want and I'll mail you one.  Every single hardware store around here has the higher flow ones.

I really do believe it is the state in which you live in.  California has more restrictions because there is a whole lot more people there.  Restrictions on everything you can imagine and then some.
In California your vehicle must pass a smog check in order to get a regsistraion.  Year's ago in Oklahoma all I had to do was show them my lights worked.  Now, here in Nebraska they can care less how much polution your car puts out...all you need here is the title matching the vin number.
Why is that?  Because we have less people so someone must assume we pollute less.

The list goes on and on.  The energy in Calfornia hasn't been stable in year's.  I don't even know what I was called when I said it was probably a good idea...didn't bother.  The people who called me the name didn't much mean anything to me.
However, sometimes you just need to do what you can do in order to make things work.  I'm not for taking away ones rights.  Yet I do understand it.
When I lived there, putting the device on my thermostat saved me 400 a month in power costs.
Never once did the electric company utilize it.
Tell someone in the midwest you pay one thousand a month for electricity and they wouldn't know what to say....nor would they believe it.  Yet, it happens.

Most rural states are Republican and receive FAR more in government welfare than they pay in taxes.  It is blue states that fund them.

You are paying for energy, you can pay trillions to keep troops in Iraq or save energy, your choice.

California would do a LOT better if we split off from the US, we could have a sane immigration policy, a sane drug policy, a sane energy program and since our universities are among the best in the world and we are a leader in technology, the fence we would have to build would be to keep people from Idaho and Kentucky from sneaking across our borders looking for the welfare handouts we used to send them.

I don’t doubt that they are fantastic but here’s what I don’t get – why people around here will buy week old California strawberries in the grocery store when they need only drive a quarter mile down the road to get them fresh at a road side farm stand. Then again, this state elected Hillary Clinton – who isn’t even from here – to the Senate, which doesn’t speak much to the cognitive abilities of my fellow New Yorkers.

Actualy, I’ve been to California several times (I have friends out there), and it is a beautiful state but it can never be home. By the way, did you know that your flag is the result of a mistake? At least according to Snopes it is – http://www.snopes.com/lost/bearflag.asp
