The latest Big Brother idea to come out of the People's Republic of California.

California now plans to mandate all new homes to have installed a thermostat that can be controlled by remote control by state officials. The state will have the ability to change the temperature of your home in order to lower energy costs and promote conservation.

Thank god I dont live in that state...This environmental crap is just getting stupid at this point.

Sanity -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 5:04:53 AM)

Californians are polluting Idaho more and more every day. They're moving here so fast that we can't possibly keep up with the growth and, if you want to know what the meaning of the word "excitment" is, try sharing an icy freeway with someone who just came to Boise from Los Angelas for the first time. Either they try doing 80 on it, or it's 2 - 3 mph with nothing in between

TheHeretic -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 6:10:24 AM)

Californians' inability to drive on anything but dry pavement under clear skies is the least of your worries, Sanity.  Ask an Oregon logger what happens when they get concerned about protecting the environment.  It fucked up the economy so badly, I had to move here.

TheHeretic -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 6:43:32 AM)

The thermostat thing isn't new.  The technology has been voluntary (for a reduced electric bill) for some time.

Like most socialist theories about centralized control, it will only make the problem worse, as individuals turn up their less efficient window mounted a/c.

A far better plan would be to encourage the installation of more efficient secondary systems like I have.  The a/c on my house doesn't need to kick in until the temp outside exceeds 110.

FirmhandKY -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 6:47:49 AM)

From the article:
Somsel, in an interview on Thursday, said he had done further research and was concerned that the radio signal - or the Internet instructions that would be sent, in an emergency, from utilities' central control stations to the broadcasters sending the FM signal - could be hacked into. That is not possible, said Nicole Tam, a spokeswoman for PG&E who works with the pilot program in Stockton. Radio pages "are encrypted and encoded," Tam said.

If they did that here , I would be mounting a fan or heater by my thermostat in order to screw up the readings .  I like to be comfortable in my home, I don't want to in the winter be wearing a lot of restrictive clothing to keep myself from feeling achy plus I find the floors get too cold if the thermostat is turned down, so I keep the thermostat set for my individual comfort level which is a lot warmer than most enjoy or want, and I am willing to pay extra for that, and as it was I upgraded my furnace to a high efficiency one inorder  to do my part in reducing consumption, I feel there are other ways to conserve energy use with have something as stupid as government controlled thermostats

juliaoceania -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 8:01:34 AM)

I always wonder why when we do something in this state, so many people in other states freak out... like we have control over how you live your life. This is why I am so happy that states have some control and I am an advocate of state's rights. I really do want the Feds (and the rest of you by extention) out of my life. I would be more than happy if California left the Union all together and we did not have to pay Fed taxes anymore.

You know... there is a huge mountain range called the Sierra Nevadas that gets lots and lots of snow, with treacherous winding roads, people from all over the USA and the world for that matter come here and attempt to drive on them, without chains, and cause all sorts of problems. There might be some Californians that never drive these roads from the South Land, but I can tell you from the license plates I have seen, driving like a stupid asshole is not a "Californian" thing, it is a "people" thing.

sub4hire -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 9:22:38 AM)

In other words you will get a reduced bill if you participate in the program.  Sounds like a good idea to me.
I had one of those installed on my house when I was living in California.  I got a discounted rate..for me it was well worth it.
I had a sick person living with me who needed a specific temperature range to survive so my electricity bill was around a grand a month.  I did whatever it took to get it down.
Nobody in this country who lives in a single family house should be paying a grand a month for electricity.
We're in the midwest now complete with hot tub, sauna and greenhouse.  Twice the size of the house we had in California and pay around 200 a month.
If the government can help out fellow Californians I see no reason why they shouldn't.

Termyn8or -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 9:50:48 AM)

Here to prove again that I am a sociopath.

One place I worked had central AC, and one of those lockboxes over the thermostat. Well it wasn't cool enough so I just took my lighter and warmed it up a bit. You see the poor little thermostat gets cold and won't turn the juice on to the AC unit. So I help it warm up a bit then it is happy and I get my cool air.

Of course others saw this and learned the trick quite quickly. In one season the bottom of the lockbox was half melted. They couldn't do shit, they would've had to fire all of us.

Seriously, I'm all for individual rights.  Yet, I'm one of those tree hugging assholes who believe that global warming isn't just a fairy tale made up by people who have nothing better to do with government science grants (have you ever actually tried to get one of those things?)

I use a simplified analogy.  If I lived in the Los Angeles in 1750, I probably could have bought a square mile downtown, and tossed my trash out the back door every day. Skip to 2008; generations of my family tossing garbage out the back door would have created a mountain of trash, pollutants, lead, oil, you name it.  My family simply doesn't have the 'right' to put my neighbors at risk the way they did, by using our own back yard as a toxic waste dump.  At some point, the government needs to protect my neighbors, by instituting regulations and rules on how I am permitted to dispose of my garbage.

I don't believe anyone has the 'right' to 60 degree air conditioning when it's 110 outside.  Part love living in a crowded civilized means making certain personal sacrifices so that the whole of the group can thrive.  If there's only 10 homes in a 10 square mile radius, obviously you don't need the same kind of regulations as, say, 5000 homes.  Is that communism?  No.  But any approach that ignores the responsibilities that come with co-habitation is doomed to become a city planning nightmare.  Perhaps this is where an old redneck approach actually has some meaning:  "If you don't like it, you can get the hell out."

It has to do with personal freedom of choice. And the program is mandatory. You dont have a choice to participate or not.

I am so sick and tired of the left-wing wanting to force the government into my home, down my throat, and force me to change my life. You leftists are just as bad as religious nuts that try to tell me how to run my life. That is not what America is about. And this is one of the main reasons people end up voting for someone like Bush.

If California needs more power, build another power plant! This environmental stuff is being taken way, way too far.

Well said Cyberdude,
You know, people really do need to start learning how to say, "Go fuck yourself" to people who try to pull this crap.
What's next, the govt. tries to monitor what movies you watch on your tv set in your own home? "Look! He's watching Behind the Green Door again!"
I just wouldn't allow one of those thermostats in my home.
Let the lawsuits begin and I'd win.
I don't suppose it would occur to these Lefties to actually start enforcing the law and get the 6-9 million illegal aliens in their state deported back to their own home countries?
That alone would save a whole bunch of energy!

Isn't it funny that someone can be so up in arms about the government wanting to control the "heat" in your home...But as your personal freedoms are being cut and eroding away nary a peep. Is this one of the main reasons people end up voting for someone like Bush?

Obviously the problem we face regarding our energy costs and shortages can be dumped at the feet of illegal immigrants. lol. It's amazing how we can be so duped to buy into the next "fifteen minute" topic. This year the elctions will feature scaring whitey to death over the hoard of illegal immigrants...See them!!! They are to blame for all of your problems!....Four years ago it was the prospect of gay marriage...Where is that amendment, by the way?

Buy into it....Wave your flag! It will be interesting four years from now after little is accomplished to squelch the tide of illegal immigration what the next fear mongering technique will be?

It would be fun to guess.

I consider myself a lefty in some subjects (such as universal health care), but forced government regulation of thermostats is going way too far. My aunt's sweat glands don't work and she passes out when she overheats. Luckily she doesn't live in California. I wonder how many people with certain health conditions will be forced to sell their homes, quit their jobs, and move because of this. Finding and deporting illegal immigrants would be a great way to conserve energy in the United States plus it would create many job openings for Americans.

pahunkboy -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 12:59:06 PM)

the feds are suing Calif over the state stircker MpH rules. what a bummer.  at least Calif tries to be green!!!  more then i can say for the feds.

as to heat- on my visit to Chicago _ it must be nice to afford heat- any where form 72-75 was the temp indoors. im used to 60 day- 53 over night.  even at tha my heat bill is high!

capitalists must wake up!!!   what right would I have to enter your home and take a shtt in your living room?   well then - how is reckless pollution any diferent?

FangsNfeet -> RE: So now the kooks in Calif. want to control your thermostat (1/12/2008 1:06:17 PM)

Pregnant and Menopausal women are not going to stand for this. Leave the thermostat alone. Otherwise, I can see a population expansion in the goveners mansion.

This idea is worse than wanting to ban Fire Places to help stop the contribution to Global Warming.

If this is what the majority of Californians want, then fine. Otherwise, I hope the good people of Cali will decide not to vote for any one next election who supports this Energy Conservation bill.

Eastern PA has same thing- folks from New Jersey coming in. Consider this- they come for the quality of life- but once here- demand all teh conveniences they had in Jersey.  The thing is- who is gonna PAY for it?

We welcome newcomers- but if you plan to wreck the area- or change the town- do us all a favor- and go home.

We do that.  Our thermostat is in the hall that we don't heat.  After the bedroom is warm enough the furnace won't go off because it is still below 50 in the hall so we have to use a hair dryer on it, then turn the main switch on the furnace off so it doesn't come back on later.[:o]
