Status: offline 		Well, I am in two minds over microsofts new baby; Vista, it is a whole lot better than my previous system, win 98, but a bit dissapointed.

Dissapointed in that the initial OS backup did'nt work, got two thirds of the way through then found errors, so the OS is not backed up yet.I did try again today, but no go.

Then, I was happily transferring my photos to cd, got three discs done then problems, it would not work again.

So,the pc has been online briefly via wifi, but not since, so seeing problems I thought to run the security programs.Running EMSI A squared and it found a trojan downloader in my WLAN settings.

Honestly, I had fewer problems with my old slow win 98 celeron than my new dual core vista. I do hope this is just teething problems, and not more aggravation to come.

Has anyone else found vista to be not what it is cracked up to be?

The only good thing about Vista is that us techs can charge for a migration to Vista after advising against it, then charge for a migration back to 2000, 2003 or XP a few days later.

Status: offline 		After trying for four hours to get simple hardware to work, and getting a real live blue screen of death (haven't seen one of them in YEARS), I am so ready to switch back to XP.

Status: offline 		I too just bought a new computer..but do you think im dumb enough to put vista on it?? hell no.... xp... vista is wayy too much of a headache.  it is also very useless for gaming so i am told...and i need to play my world of warcraft  cleanly!

Status: offline 		I wanted XP, try as I may, I could find no vendor who would supply an XP loaded machine, and after paying what I did for a reasonable pc, I no longer have the funds to go backwards, or is it forwards to XP.

I did think cynically that M$ brings out a new OS to stimulate magazine sales telling people how to fix or understand the blasted thing.Just when people were getting to grips with XP, out comes a new bag of worms.

I will give it a little longer, get it online, update what needs updating then see. Much more trouble and I will be looking for a licensed copy of XP, at least most of the bugs are wriggled out of that.

I thought vista was meant to be more secure than XP, how then a trojan in my WLAN settings?

Status: offline 		Anyone using Vista has my undying sympathy.  I got a new laptop last spring under the assumption I could still get it with XP.  No such luck - I was stuck with Vista Home Premium.  Two days later I was praying for death.  I never did get the buggy bastard to work right, and I eventually ended up taking it back to Best Buy and demanding a computer that actually worked.  To get a computer still loaded with XP I had to enroll as a "Small Business" and buy a laptop configured for the workplace.  It cost me an additional $400 for my "Downgrade Upgrade" and I've never been so thankful to part with the cash.  My new XP works like a charm and I couldn't be happier.

Status: offline 		Ya just wait till you have the money and suffer with vista until that happens... XP is only about $100 for the home version.... add $100 (most tech are 50 per hour around here anyway) for a tech to instal it on your computer.  most tech's will even buy the xp for you so you dont have to go to a store to get it.  it will be worth the $ in the long run.  just make sure you get the origional cd from them.

Status: offline 		The going rule of thumb right now is if you get a new computer with the right specs...go ahead and get Vista. If you have XP and you dont have any problems with it, dont upgrade, it's just not worth it.

I got vista running on two of my computers. One came with it with the laptop I bought and the other I upgraded from a windows 2000 machine and found it was actually cheaper to go to Vista than to go to XP.

My opinion on it is that it's so-so. It's got some eye candy. But there is a few things I dont like about it and it's just not that big of an upgrade to go crazy over.

Status: offline 		A couple of months ago, my Dell 4700 tower went out. I took it to a computer store in my town that sells business machines. They said it was the motherboard and I needed a new tower. When I told them I didn't want Vista because I heard it was a nightmare, they said all of their towers came with XP unless the customer specified otherwise. The new tower cost me around $500, plus since it's technically a business machine, I get American tech support. My advice to anyone buying a new computer is to go to a business store. It's easy to get an operating system that works and any time you need help, you can talk to someone that speaks clear English.

Status: offline 		Where I got mine, was a business store. I avoided the cheap sale computers over xmas, and got a HP 530, something I can expand upto 4GB ram if I need it.I do photos and sometimes video, so dual core and loads of ram is a good idea, and I need to be mobile.

I enquired at the business store about XP, and was told firstly, it would cost me more to get XP and the machine is built for vista, so a downgrade/upgrade might be fraught with problems.

Status: offline 		To tell the truth, I have had no problems with Vista other than the learning curve of a new software bundle. I just bought a new HP loaded with it recently and so far the only problem has been with a bad memory stick that came from the factory and was replaced free of charge. I have a working network that is a combination of WIFI and hard wired, the Vista machine being WIFI'd in with no issues. It also has had no problems with network file sharing between machines and working the 3 networked printers. There are 3 WIN XP machines on the network and 1 WIN 98SE. All are communicating with each other just fine. The Vista machine is dual core and has a 4 Gig of RAM as well as an SSD drive and is faster than I expected after reading a lot of reviews on Vista. I think the key to making it work is lots of RAM. Vista is a real space hog to be sure. I pity anyone trying to make it work on a machine that was designed for XP as they are just going to run out of memory and processor speed fast with Vista. If you have a machine working fine with XP don't upgrade to Vista. If you are buying a new Vista machine then put as much RAM into it as you can afford. To be honest I like it but so far I am only just beginning to learn how to optimize it for the best performance. I think a lot of the problems with Vista most people are having is that they are trying to run it as though it was a faster version of XP. It is faster, I love the boot speed for example, but it's not XP and you kind of have to blank the XP learning out of your mind and be willing to start fresh in your learning process. In the room where I am currently sitting, aside from the aforementioned networked machines there are also 2 8080 machines running CP/M, an AT clone runing MS DOS 5.5 and an Apple //e runing DOS 3.3, Pro DOS, MS DOS 5.5 and CP/M. Having so many different operating systems forces me to be flexible when I move from machine to machine. I think that's why Vista has proved to be an easy adjustment so far. Not one blue screen that wasn't directly related to that bad memory stick.

Status: offline 		I still have XP on mine, and am happy.  Why would I upgrade to a faster computer with a slower system?  I want to get shit done, not watch a dancing dog (Anyone use the search function?)

When I get my next one, I am going Apple, no looking back.  A bit more pricey than a cheap PC (I have a Toshiba, so not much more) but less fucking about with it and it does what you want.

Why take the risk?

Status: offline 		I'm on Vista and LOVE IT.   I have had it for about a year now.   My only two gripes are (1) why the heck did they need to move everything around in the control panels, etc. and (2) start up is slow as Christmas, it's quick once running but slow to boot up.   

My mother's machine is on Vista a well and I am basically her administrator, that is where it REALLY rocks.   It was a lot more difficult to keep her XP machine in tune.



All that said, we both bought these machines with Vista already on them.  The vast majority of problems I have heard have been from people upgrading older machines and trying to get the new drivers for older gear.

I don't know that I've ever loved a desktop OS before, but I've been using Vista since the RC1 beta and can't understand what peoples' issues with it are.  Granted, I've always had higher end systems because I need them for some of the work I do so meeting the hardware requirements was never an issue.  Aside from figuring out where they moved everything to, it's been great.

No trouble playing any games, old applications work and even old hardware I have works fine.  I know that people like to bash on anything connected with Microsoft, and I'm sure our #1 anti MS zealot will be along shortly to froth at the mouth and try to explain why we should all be using some *nix variant on our desktops, but I've been quite happy with Vista.

Status: offline 		As A tech, I absolutely love Vista.    As A Consumer, it could use some work

Ive worked on practically every OS including linux. Vista really isnt that bad, does it take a lot of resources? hell yeah, but then so does everything else. You want to talk about system requirements, look at a little game called Crysis. One of the best things about VIsta is that it knows when to get out of the damn way, for instance, when you are playing a game, its onyl taking up 1/4th as many resources, I play WoW exclusively on my Vista machine for that reason, a lot less lag. ( I have 2 Dell XPS 720s, fully loaded, one with XP and one with Vista) When I got my first system with XP, it was because of all the bad things I heard about Vista. But in all actuality, anyone remember what the WIndows 98 launch looked like? or how many service packs were needed to make ME at least a little bit stable? thought so. Hell XP was buggier than a 2 dollar whore when it first came out. no pre-loaded driver software, barely any plugnplay. Might as well have been SCSI only. Any system I can repair in less than 1/2 an hour, as long as it is a software problem works for me. and the actual software emulators, when used correctly, work a hell of a lot better than WINE could have ever wished to. Im not sayin there aren't downsides, my point is, when aren't there? Wanna go with Apple? sure its easy to use, lokks pretty, min $200 more, less functionality, locked out of half the system no matter what, need specialized tech that charge rates I could never ever get away with. Linux maybe then? Sure, you can fix anything that happens to it, and best yet, its free! Of course you'll need an emulator to get practically anything to work, oh and if you save the notepad wrong, the OS decides it must be a system file an incorporates it. Vista is quickly becoming the required OS for gaming. So you might as well get used to it now.

BTW I have yet to find a game that I cant play on the Vista system, even some of the first RTS and RPGs.

Edited to add: And as far as finding anything goes? use the search bar thats built into the start menu.

Status: offline 		I make my living writing software primarily for Windows PC's and Vista looks to be an utter and complete disaster as bad as or worse than Win ME. Get a brand new machine from a reputable manufacturer and you shouldn't have any trouble. Try and install Vista of any type on an older box well within its recommended specs and it is entirely a coin flip whether all your hardware is Vista compatible. Even if all the printers and stuff works you're going to have all sorts of problems with software that used to work but doesn't anymore and unless the maker has come out with a Vista version you're out of luck.

Back in the summer I got a new Vista box at work. Great machine dual core, 4 gigs, RAID. Picked up a Vista compatible 3D graphics card. As I work quite crazy hours, I'm at work now almost 1AM on Sat night, my bosses don't mind if I have a game or two on the box for relaxation. So I try and get City of Heroes running on this box which is totally OTT of its system specs No go. I spend hours of my own time trying to get this to work. At first its so I can blow a half hour or hour while I'm eating a meal or sitting through an automated QC test before checking in a project. But eventually it was just to because of the absurdity of not being able to get this program to run on this great box. Long story short I could never get it to work correctly.

So here I sit waiting to lock up while a couple of coders on my team race a monday deadline and all I can do is surf the web. Stupid Vista. Be glad to get home to my XP box.
