The National ID card has been coming for a long time, because, frankly, the USA is one of the few countries that doesn't have one.

When I was living in Asia, I had to have an Alien ID card on my person at all times. Any cop or train conductor or gov't official had the right to demand it from me at any time to prove who I said I was. And it happened more than once.

A symbol of totalitarianism? Probably. Officious? You bet! Necessary? Who can say? But in the age of computer printers, scanners, fingerprint readers, cell phones, interceptors, radar scramblers, and who knows what else, how can we really prove we are who we say we are?

I don't want to carry an ID card in my own country, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens in the next five years.

So does this mean they won't let blind people board planes if they don't have one of these 'Real' driver's licenses?

That's a very good point: how will those who don't OWN a driver's license board an internal flight? If a driver's license is an absolute requirement to board a (non-international) flight, then it's no longer just a driver's license.

my dear departed grandfather used to tell me when i was a little girl that the day was coming when we would all have a barcode tattoo on our foreheads that would link us to information stored in a central computer with all our personal records, bank accounts, legal history and so on.  my dad used to say he was nuts.  i'm not so sure anymore.

That's the sort of thing my mom would tell me when the supermarket scanners came into play...just another step closer to Armageddon...
Any card that I have that has a magnetic strip on it gets wrecked so it won't scan...I have no idea if it has any effect on it, but it's worth a try...I'm all for screwing the government...

I am not sure how I feel about this yet.  However, calling them drivers liscences is short hand, because the vast majority of MAericans have Drivers liscences.  And just like now the DMV will issue state "real" ID cards for people who don't drive.  The problem would seem to come with large 15 year olds who don't have a legal ID yet, but look like adults.
