"New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel"

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer

" WASHINGTON - Millions of air travelers may find going through airport security much more complicated this spring, as the Bush administration heads toward a showdown with state governments over post-Sept. 11 rules for new driver's licenses. By May, the dispute could leave millions of people unable to use their licenses to board planes, but privacy advocates called that a hollow threat by federal officials.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who was unveiling final details of the REAL ID Act's rules on Friday, said that if states want their licenses to remain valid for air travel after May 2008, those states must seek a waiver indicating they want more time to comply with the legislation.

The deadline is an effort to get states to begin phasing in the REAL ID program. Citizens born after Dec. 1, 1964, would have six years to get a new license; older Americans would have until 2017.

Chertoff said that for any state which doesn't seek such a waiver by May, residents of that state will have to use a passport or certain types of federal border-crossing cards if they want to avoid a vigorous secondary screening at airport security.

"The last thing I want to do is punish citizens of a state who would love to have a REAL ID license but can't get one," Chertoff said. "But in the end, the rule is the rule as passed by Congress."

The plan's chief critic, the American Civil Liberties Union, called Chertoff's deadline a bluff — and urged state governments to call him on it.

"Are they really prepared to shut those airports down? Which is what effectively would happen if the residents of those states are going to have to go through secondary scrutiny," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the ACLU's technology and liberty program. "This is a scare tactic."

So far, 17 states have passed legislation or resolutions objecting to the REAL ID Act's provisions, many due to concerns it will cost them too much to comply. The 17, according to the ACLU, are Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington.

Maine officials said Friday they were unsure if their own state law even allows them to ask for a waiver."

Awesome.  Our economy's not already suffering, let's bankrupt a few more airlines! Yay!  Oh great my state has objected it will now take me a full day at the airport instead of the just half a day I have to waste to take a flight.  Honestly, are we hurting terrorists or US this way?

There will always be phoney ID's, hell I had 2 SS cards from employee's copied them front and back upon hire, few months go by, sure nuff, here comes a letter from ssa fake's!!!  Biometrics have come so far, they already have my fingerprints anyway, why not just scan a print for ID, fast, accurate, (unless you have a pocket full of fingers) I know...they can be fooled too, (I've done it) but I'm playing with entry/mid level stuff.  The last thing I want to do is spend MORE time in the airport, bad enough it's a minimum 10 hours each way!

dincubus -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 2:33:23 AM)

Personally, this real id thing is a boatload of BS. i can understand the need for security, but come the hell on.. mandating a certain form of ID, confirming a person's identity. wtf ever... i personally will be moving to a state that will not follow the real id rules. and i am thankful for that. paranoia is one thing, but nazism is something totally different.. and the real id is coming cloe, in my opinion, nazism

PanthersMom -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 6:39:51 AM)

my dear departed grandfather used to tell me when i was a little girl that the day was coming when we would all have a barcode tattoo on our foreheads that would link us to information stored in a central computer with all our personal records, bank accounts, legal history and so on.  my dad used to say he was nuts.  i'm not so sure anymore.

Great, I'm now considered an older American thanks.

National ID.... be sure to look at the entire proposed law. There have been some interesting little tidbits that have been being pushed for this National ID program which was originated by Republicans (yep, those very ones that claim they are for rights and freedoms and less government intrusion) and has been in the works from my empirical knowledge, since back in 1994.

Something to watch for is the future prospects of enactment of an attachment that would actually make it a felony to leave your home without your National ID card. Many states do not allow anyone with any kind of felony conviction to vote. Hmmmm.

But it is for your own protection....

just like the Patriot Act... wherein if you read it closely, you will find that a couple of friends out in the woods with deer rifles hunting deer could actually be suspect of being terrorists.

But it's for your own protection...

So Americans continue to feed that same dog that keeps biting them over and over and over again.

But, it's for your own protection...

The patriot act is nothing more than a direct attack on the american people by the federal government and a power grab to circumvent the constitution.  Who ever said nazism was bang on target.

"Your papers please!"

I thought my licesne was "real" already. Seems real to me.

popeye1250 -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 8:04:48 AM)

I think mine's "real".
I had to show them my birth certificate and SS card and N.H. state D.L. when I moved here to S. Carolina.
But, if I fly I'll take my passport as well.

Its becoming easier to just stay at home and what a shame that is ... to discourage exploring this great world of ours ...

Owner59 -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 8:24:32 AM)

We have the new DL/IDs, here in Jersey. It`s no big deal.

It`s full of hi-tech shit that makes it almost impossible to duplicate.Holographic and watermarks, etc.,are embedded into the Driver`s license.

It`s not a national ID.It`s a national standard,which would make all state`s IDs ,like NJ`s.

If anyone thinks there isn`t already a data base, with all our info/data in it,wake up.'1984', was 24 years ago.

pahunkboy -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 9:00:44 AM)

This new world has made everyday life more red tapeish.  My legal PA DL which is a card, and a cardlet,  this due to change of address 2 are needed- yet the state then querries over why 2.... but that is what MVd furnished me with

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 10:29:55 AM)

Ive only flown twice and that was to halifax from toronto... never will fly again.
this was in the early 90s.  i prefer greyhound or train.  you can see more of the country and socialize much more as well.  it's much slower yes...but also far cheaper and if you do it during spring or summer the views are amazing.

popeye1250 -> RE: "New ID Rules May Complicate Air Travel" (1/16/2008 10:37:11 AM)

It's funny, they're worried about I.D.s but the borders aren't secure.

Greetings

i really dont discuss religion that often because its like politics, nobody ever agrees.
However, for the Christians out there or whose who read the Holy Bible, it was said that everyone would have to wear the mark of the beast in order to by things or sell things or even have a normal life.  this real ID thing, is indeed, the mark of the beast we know as America. well not all of America, just the buttholes that are doing this.

The Patriot Act, started it...when you couldnt express your dislike for any form of the government without being label a terrorist. i have seen information on this real id thing long ago, but people made of the one's that were making the comments. hmmm....i wonder how they feel now.

i welcome you to this New World Order. this sucks yes...it really does.

well wishes to All and all.

Was that to get a South Carolina driver's liscense?

But, if I fly I'll take my passport as well.

A passport is probably best at the airport.

Not to sound odd or anything, but REAL republicans are all about the gov't staying out of people's lives.

What one sees in Washington DC is not necessarily an acurate representation of the core values and tenents of either party...

(Real republicans tend to be closer to libertarians... which is depressing!)

Whatever happened to the good old days of Federalists and anti-Federalists! (I'm ~250 years and a gender away from being able to get involved in that sort of debate.)

I guess you haven`t heard of the neo-cons...

Don`t get me going.....

So does this mean they won't let blind people board planes if they don't have one of these 'Real' driver's licenses?   [:D]
