pahunkboy -> - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/16/2008 2:33:14 PM)

I am in disbeleif over the comments made about California.   Unbeleivable.  I find the people of California to be dynamic and enthused- interesting.  America with out California sure would be bleak. I visitted 4ish times- a few friends had moved
from Chicago to CA.  I would live there- but realisitcally I know it is costly- I live where I can have the best quality of life.

The state is beautiful.  Tho gridlock and population abound.
Sprawal is all around us.
I love the power to dream. If one doesnt have dreams- new inventions never happen.

I was packed and ready to move to LA when I was 20. I ended up not moving there. The pilot I was set to move in with -was an alcaholic and abit of a con.

Groing up in Chicago- just about any big city has cons, curruption. I do think- the cons in LA are more stylish.

Much of the nation is provincial and stale.  Now what are you personally going to do about that?

The dare to dream- that put America on the map, has become akin to soiled laundry.  All the talk of the American century being over- well; as stale as much of the US is- Ild say- yeah- America is over.

Provincialism is like a mundane re-run we seen 99 times.

Get over it.

I find it very hard to be sympathetic to California when it comes to region/state bashing.  You want to hear some bullshit; tell people that you are from Arkansas.  I have to hear the toothless, inbred, hillbilly jokes all the time.  Since I have a pretty thick accent, I have to hear it every time I talk to someone.  I know people think it's funny, and that's fine.  I can take a joke, and I don't take it personally.  But don't tell me to not make the same jokes.  When Californians bitch about their reputation, I don't want to hear it.

People who live in New Hampshire call their neighbors to the South who live in Massachusetts, "Massholes."

ownedgirlie -> RE: - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/16/2008 3:15:14 PM)

I live in California.  I find state bashing to be rather silly, actually.  I've traveled to 20 different states in this country and found each enjoyable in its own way.  And yes, without Silicon Valley, in California, we'd be without a LOT.

It's kind of like football teams, though.  We pick a team we like and then pick on the other teams.  There's a sense of loyalty to our home state and enjoy flinging criticisms at others.  Whatever!  I guess it's fun to hate.  [8D]

Griswold -> RE: - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/16/2008 5:18:12 PM)

People that bash other states are simply people who were too stupid to move to Seattle.

(Where all good things, I might add....come from).

Preach it, slaveboy[:D].  I hear ya.  I also live in Arkansas but only after having been born and raised in WV - double whammy as far as ignorant people's stereotypical assumptions.  That's fine.  Let 'em stupidly assume what they will.  That leaves the beauty of our state(s) for us to enjoy.  If they ever really found out how beautiful the mountains are, it would be like another Denver - flooded with newcomers who move in and take over.  No thanks.............luci

Oh yeah? Ever been to Massachusetts?

what I realy cant stand is people that move in of their own accord, then bash the hell out place that they just moved to. North Carolina catches it all the time... the yankees move in, and give us shit... that is why we have a town called C.A.R.Y.

As someone who has been taken the piss out of all her life for being from the wrong place, I find these regionalism amusing. People always talk crap about one another. It's part of the 'us and them' way of thinking. It's quite pathetic, but oh! So much fun!

Yes I have!!  I had lunch in Portsmouth, and hung out in Boston for a few days.  The people there were cool, the shopping was fun, and the clam chowder and Boston Cream Pie were delicious!  And the Museum of Fine Art was beautiful.  Plus the gorgeous man in a corner park who asked me to listen to his rap CD was quite cool.  Harvard was beautiful, North Side had great cannolis and the subway was easy to get around on.

And I had a Bostonian accent down pat.  Mr. Wonderful laughed when I left him a voicemail in one.  [:D]

Edited to add - Actually, of all the states I visited, it was Connecticut that I didn't like.

Hence why I moved south to Lee County. [:D] Now that in itself has alot of joke potential but it is probably true. So we like our guns and alcohol here in Lee County. [;)]

I have to say I have met a lot of assholes from Massachusetts - but I've met a few cool ones too.Every one of them liked to get into fights though, they were all like that character in Good Will Hunting, fight at the drop of a hat for any reason - no reason - weird.

Yeah right, coming from a hillbilly...

At least they know you're an American: tell people you're from New Mexico and they're all suprised you speak English.

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/16/2008 8:03:47 PM)

I have lived in several states:

Born in Michigan (yep, I'm a Michigander)
lived in and around Boston a total of 7 years
lived in San Francisco and the East Bay
lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for 4 years
lived in the Fort Lauderdale area for 3 years
lived in Arkansas for a year
and now I live in southern California

Each state or area has wonderful people and beautiful sights. There are people of culture and refinement in each place. There are also ugly things and nasty people in each state. I've learned a lot in each area I've lived in. I've also learned that I like where I live now, even if it is expensive. I was going to move back to Michigan as soon as I qualified for Medicare, but they have snow and it gets cold.

i moved to a small, rural town in South Carolina with a hearse, a whole bunch of piercings, and a four-foot-tall concrete gargoyle in the driveway. i'd do a lot more if i didn't have to work for a living [&:]

The problem with California is that it tends to germinate a lot of totalitarian Nanny State ideas that eventually spread to the rest of the country like a fungus. However, having just spent most of last week in the LA area (admittedly the wealthier areas), i have to admit it's a lot nicer than i expected. Love those mountain roads! [8D]

I think you are over reacting a bit. ownedgirlie hit the nail on the head. Pride in your State/Region is a lot like rooting for your favorite football team – part of the fun is poking fun at the other guys. Granted that, just like the drunken bozo fan at the game, some people can take it too far but if you can’t take a few jabs in the ribs well, all I got to say is lighten up a little people. And ownedgirlie also hit the nail on the head as for why we should lighten up – it’s fun to hate. This is a result of our evolution and if we try to completely suppress our evolutionary instincts we run the risk of doing ourselves serious mental damage. We need to indulge our darker side a little (what the hell is BDSM if not a joy ride into some of our darker instincts). A little humorous give and take (and the take is just as important as the give) is good for us.

Well, if y’all weren’t a bunch of toothless, inbred, hillbillies you wouldn’t have this problem now, would you?

Oh Yeah. Grunge. That was real good. Thank you ever so much for that.

Bingo! Now if people would just realize that, they could lighten up a little. After all, I’m a twenty minute (okay, twenty five in the winter) drive from Niagara Falls. I’m also a twenty minute drive from Love Canal. Go ahead people... start with the mutation jokes... I can take them.

Suzykeu -> RE: - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/16/2008 9:53:56 PM)

i lived in Florida for a while and we didn't really have any state enemies there, everybody dumped on us and we said "No, it's all those North Cubans/South Georgians that give us the problems." Meanwhile we all knew it was those yankee retirees coming down and ruining the state. When i moved up to Northern Virginia it's the same thing. Northern Virginia doesn't want to be associated with the South and the South thinks we've turned into Yankees.

But we can all unite against West Virginia. Splitters.

hermione83 -> RE: - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/16/2008 9:56:41 PM)

In Kentucky, they make fun of people from Tenn. In Southern Indiana, they heavily make fun of kentucky (and northern indiana). In northern indiana, they spend all their time making fun of people from southern indiana.

at least its not Johnston County, the moonshine capitol of the world...

ravennfyre -> RE: - dissing other states or regions. Why ? (1/17/2008 6:26:12 AM)

I've lived in Michigan all my life and I routinely bash my own state. It's like watching a trainwreck happen in your own backyard. EVERY other state looks good to me...
