Why do so many people post a picture with no head showing? What is the motivation behind it? i can think of negative reasons, but does anyone know the good reasons? Thanks

Honsoku -> RE: Proflie pictures (1/17/2008 4:20:29 PM)

The only good reasons (that I know of);

They are worried about being identified.

Or,

They are showcasing their best asset.

RCdc -> RE: Proflie pictures (1/17/2008 4:24:27 PM)

To provide a visual representation whilst protecting ones anonymity.

i have found that the majority of  people who post the most revealing pictures are the ones that complain the most that their not getting serious replies and don't know why.

RCdc -> RE: Proflie pictures (1/17/2008 4:34:07 PM)

I don't know so much about revealing -  I haven't seen that so much as a trend myself.
Some of our photography can be deemed as revealing at different times but we haven't received anything negative about them from others here or elsewhere... had a couple refused but then posted again when resubmitted.
But that depends on the reviewer.

A lot of folks don't have the liberty of being able to show their faces on a site such as CollarMe, whether it is due to job issues or just a general worry of having their world change over a photo.I had my face up for a long time then had a bout of paranoia and pulled my pics down lol and I don't even work! I can only imagine how hard it would be to have a career where you have to keep things so compartmentalized and hidden, that is a lot of stress and work IMO. I'm not sure if that would be considered a negative reason for keeping the face out, but it is a very valid reason for many.

i mean revealing by where all that's in the picture is almost bare breasts or some  very provacative sexual pose. Then they complain that the only responses that they get are from creeps and from people who just want sex.

If you don't want to be identified (which i can understand) put it in your profile that you will send a picture upon request. That's what i did in the begining Then i just put it up.

RCdc -> RE: Proflie pictures (1/17/2008 4:59:50 PM)

I do believe it isn't down to the people who post.  I can go to a persons profile and see an explicit photograph.  Does not mean I automatically assume the person is looking for only sexual contacts.  So I don't believe it is the photography or image that is the problem, it is the person viewing it that makes that false assumption without contacting and finding out first.  A photograph is one thing, what a person sees is another.  I will openly admit we have males contact us because they see my photography and think I am a dominant.  But then I have that happen at events and munches also.  I don't see why people should hide their sexuality or their preference to exhibit as long as it is within TOS.  Otherwise you start going along the lines of - if you don't want to get raped, don't be a woman in a short skirt on your own in a pub.

I did'nt put up a pic for ages when I first joined, then I put up something vague and now well, on advice from a very dear friend above, I have pics and lots of them, but pics chosen by that other, as in her oppinion they were the better ones. I would sooner defer to another I trust as to what is best.

I too find the pics with a head cut off rather disjointed and un appealing. My initial reticence about posting a pic was overcome by doing a pic with me in the distance. I know the quality of these pics here is such that if one should want to enlarge the picture to say confirm a suspicion, the picture will pixelate to give an ill defined image.

But now, I am cool about my image being posted here, I am being true to myself, open and honest.

well, my first thought would be to remain anonymous...i don't think that is necessarily negative....i would think people post pictures that they are comfortable showing to others and if it doesn't include a head, then that is for them to decide.  i'm just saying that it doesnt' have to mean something negative.

Because they can and it falls within their comfort zone of what they want to reveal.

Well, as others have noted, some people work in sensitive positions and fear association with BDSM could cost them promotions or pay raises; others are not yet comfortable with being openly associated with this site or all that it entails. But there are other reasons not yet cited.

In his excellent book, The Psychology of Cyberspace, John Suler wrote that "It's well known that people say and do things in cyberspace that they wouldn't ordinarily say or do in the face-to-face world. They loosen up, feel more uninhibited, express themselves more openly. Researchers call this the "disinhibition effect." It's a double-edged sword. Sometimes people share very personal things about themselves. They reveal secret emotions, fears, wishes. Or they show unusual acts of kindness and generosity. We may call this benign disinhibition.

"On the other hand, the disinhibition effect may not be so benign. Out spills rude language and harsh criticisms, anger, hatred, even threats. Or people explore the dark underworld of the internet....places they would never visit in the real world. We might call this toxic disinhibition."
Suler goes on to explain that because of the removal of personal risk through the Internet, the user employs anonymity as an additional tool to remove further dangers, thus heightening the experience. An elementary safety factor, of course, but an effective one.

One of the telling points that Suler makes regarding Cyberspace anonymity is this: "When people have the opportunity to separate their actions from their real world and identity, they feel less vulnerable about opening up. Whatever they say or do can't be directly linked to the rest of their lives. They don't have to own their behavior by acknowledging it within the full context of who they 'really' are. When acting out hostile feelings, the person doesn't have to take responsibility for those actions. In fact, people might even convince themselves that those behaviors "aren't me at all." In psychology this is called 'dissociation'."

I don't know, but the answer seems obvious... they don't want their face identified [;)]  For what reason?  It could be for a number of reasons... maybe they are under the witness protection program [:D]

As for people placing photos of their body or "provocative" photos... that doesn't mean that they're looking for a playmate... I have a pic on my profile that might be considered provocative, but where else would I show the picture?  Why wouldn't I want to show a "naughty" picuture as I would call it.... specially the one I put up, it shows my Sirs big hand on my ass [:D]
