Apparently he retired his licence back in 2006. There's something about that guy that doesn't sit right with me. While I do like a person that speaks frankly without sugarcoating issues, I find his self-aggrandisement sickening.

No license for Cali but that article did not say what state if any he is currently licensed for. Apparently his Cali one expired. It would really surprise me if people were genuinely shocked to learn that pop psychologists and the like that make their main focus television or radio are not properly trained or licensed. If someone is taken national as Dr Phil was then technically wouldn't he be illegally practicing in every state that has a listener? [8D]That said, I cannot stand him. I think he is condescending, sexist (not in the fun way either) and just not a nice man all around. One of the first times I caught him on television he was speaking to a young mother totally overwhelmed with her toddler UMs and stressed out because her husband did little to help. His advice was to have the UMs cleaned, fed and in bed before he got home so that the father would feel at ease and be happier therefore making the mother happier. That totally ticked me off & I've found no redeeming value in his advice since then.I thought it was creepy that he wanted to have Britneys therapy made public. Creepy, invasive and exploitative but then that kinda fits in with todays view towards a lot of things.

Dr Phil charging in on a white horse to save Britney! What great stuff for his ratings! It's a shame he had to do that on the back of someone else's misery and pretty much shows what the guy's about.

That is really fucking creepy. I'd want her completely OUT of the public eye during the difficult time of therapy, not under it. I can not even begin to imagine trying to go through therapy when the entire nation was judging and mocking me for every setback.

It IS creepy. It was an abuse of confidence - he shamefully abused their confidence in him. Hopefully his ratings will plummet and he's already stated he now wishes he hadn't given a public speech regarding her parents having asked him to personally go and speak with Britney.

It is doubly hard for any person in a position of emotional vulnerability having therapy to entrust those emotions in another person, but to then have the world scrutinising every tiny action... I can't even begin to know what that would be like. What irks me is that if the average 'joe public' were to behave in ways these photographers/journalists do to gain their pictures/stories, they would likely be incarcerated for their actions. Yet, it seems the paparazzi are given carte blanche to behave as they like. One paparazzi gets to sell his pictures of a naked actress after spying on her to get them... If it were joe public they'd be prosecuted and have to sign the sex offenders register!

It seems no one respects the man yet he has a seeminly popular tv showv .. has written books that people buy..... seemingly practices without a license .. yet .... suffers no consequences.  Does being on tv ..make you immune to the standard the rest of the world is held to. Or is he just the newest that the world loves to hate?

The sad fact is that many people love watching other people's 'fuck ups'. It detracts from their own issues.

There's a programme here in the UK hosted by Jeremy Kyle. It's a typical 'Two people have a personal grudge - Jeremy Kyle will sort it"... It's very popular, people love it b/c it has the 'Oh my god" factor about it. People love to watch others' misery.. Why? I'm not sure why that is but it's a popular pasttime. What is sickening about the Jeremy Kyle Show (as reported some months ago) is that many of those appearing on his show have an addiction to alcohol, so the producers ensure they get their 'fix' prior to going out on the stage. Apparently they are also 'baited' prior to going on so that the audience can be assured of a good show. It's vile, tacky, on Mondays to Fridays and very popular, and classic human behaviour... Reminiscent of Roman gladiatorial days.

Not to hijack the thread ... but sounds like good ole Jerry Springer who laughs all the way to the bank every week cause everyone is too sophisticated to watch his show !!

I know, that really pisses me off. It particularly gets my goat that they don't just go after the actors - they go after the families and, more importantly to me, the UMs! Leave the kids out of it unless they are at an event with their parents like a movie opening!

Ugh... I take an evil delight in watching the movie Paparazzi because of this. While death is too extreme (course in the movie they deserved it), I do wish they would go get some karma.

 I think there is a degree of immunity and as MissMorrigan says there is a huge pull towards things that expose and humiliate others on national tv for all to see. I don't get it and I don't like to watch it. I feel embarrassed for the people that end up looking like inbred uneducated idiots when in reality they're just messed up and could use help. For me it ties into a lot of things from the general decline in personal responsibility to the lack of basic manners. Maybe I'm just old and raphsodizing about the golden yesteryear but I don't think so, it really does seem that there has been a big slide in things. So many shows that thrive on shock value and showcasing the basest of humanity. It makes me sad.

I'll confess: Sometimes I watch Jerry. Most of the time I can't stomach it though. I prefer Judge Judy and the others like that. Montel's show has been ok, I liked it when he took a bunch of pre-teen girls who were trying to get pregnant and had them baby-sit infants (under supervision but no help) for an afternoon.

Miss Harlet, I think they're all operating on the same basis, except some, coughs at mentioning Jerry Springer, make no bones about it being purely for entertainment value and the world be damned, yet people like Dr Phil try and cover their excrement in copious lubricant in the hope it won't stick.

I admit I sometimes watch Dr Phil .....  and sometimes agree with him and sometimes not.... but always wonder .. why his guests choose to be there ... why they wish to expose all of that on tv .... altho I admit to having watched and enjoyed the shows about the young girl meeting someone from a foreign country online and the tangled web that became ... and also the one where the children were kidnapped by their father and taken out of the country into a religious community.   They made me think ....

Well said.

There is one doc that I think bucks the trend of sleaze-meister, at least his intent is good; Dr Drew Pinksy (of Love Line fame). He has a celebrity rehab show on VH-1, but I tend to think he genuinely tries to do good.

And unlike some "doctors", he is in active medical practice.

I heard somewhere that it was a writer's strike that helped spawn "reality" shows like Temptation Island. I don't know it's true or not. If it is... I really hope the strike gets called off soon before more are made!
