The government is proposing an $800 tax "rebate", what would you do with it? (Non-US folks, feel free to respond too).

KatyLied -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 4:01:12 PM)

Is this something that will turn against us next year at tax refund time (as in reduce our refund by the rebate amount)?  If so, I already don't like it.

petdave -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 4:02:57 PM)

Didn't get squat last time, probably wouldn't get anything this time, either. [:'(]

Good question, Katy; I'm not sure. I don't think so, but.......[:)]

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 4:04:41 PM)

I get the first vote! Woo-Hoo!

I probably won't get a rebate, because I didn't file or pay taxes last year (SS Disability is non-taxable). But if I got one, I would use it to get some new wheelchair tires, some new clothes, and lots of sugar-free candy.

Can't eat too much of the candy on any one day, though.

KatyLied -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 4:05:42 PM)

If this impacts my tax refund then I can't spend it.  I use my refunds for emergencies throughout the year.  Last year it paid for a new water heater and some expenses for my college-kid.

Aylee -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 4:45:35 PM)

I have always wanted a concubine.  I just hope that $800 will cover it.

sub4hire -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 4:50:55 PM)

We will more than likely save it.  Although I like your gold idea.  Been seriously looking into investing lately.
The US market is so depressed already.

Screw practical - do they make mancubines?

I'd buy a pig, in that case.  I always wanted a porkupine! [:D]  LOL

charmdpetKeira -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 5:16:41 PM)

Hmmmm… tough choices.

I was discussing this with a friend from work last night. My immediate thought to hearing the idea was “Sure, someone else wanting to throw peanuts at the clowns.” (My perception of their perception, not my own.)

But, since we are living in a country where it seems to be every man, woman, and unmentionable for themselves; I think I will bury mine in a mason jar somewhere out in the woods. It won’t really get me far right now, but in a few years, who knows.

pahunkboy -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 5:55:38 PM)

its a dumb idea.   how is it we each owe 30k per the national debt- but they can cut a check?  i dont think i want it.

If you don't someone else will.

I understand your point, but don't you think you could find good use for it, even if you don't spend it on yourself?

Hi Charm, certainly I would take it. It is sorta a booby prize- --i wont run to the mall with it tho. likely ild pay bills- like heat.

the feds kept the phone tax thing due to a student laon... well i have been making payments on that- so- such refund wouldnt be stopped.

charmdpetKeira -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 6:27:45 PM)

Hunkboy,

Yeah, that's how i feel about it too. I wouldn't bother if I thought it would be put to good use. Then again, if it were being put to good use, they wouldn't need to offer it.

Now that I think of it- Ild pay down some credit card debt. I hesitae- as some ccs take away credit out of fear of bad debts= ild like to take advantage of a 5.9% fixed for life of balance transfer.... but..../ right now i really dont know what i have where money wise.   i like a few extra $ in the checking-- i had sold some stock to pay the visa card- but.... who knows..

KatyLied -> RE: Tax rebate (1/20/2008 6:46:00 PM)

I'm guessing the only reason for this is to fire up the economy.  They want us to take that $800 and spend it immediately.  Am I wrong?

That's exactly it, from what I gather, the last thing they want us to do is save it.
