Interesting question. And I do love the various points of view that I've seen thus far. As far me, it's very simple. It's all about respect. Since I'm military trained, "Sir" means respect. I was also raised in the South so Sir and Ma'am are naturals as well. Master / Mistress leaves no question at all in ones mind nor does Lord or Lady. Heck, I even believe that "Hey you" can be said respectfully enough if a bottom is trained to do so. :) So, in my book; All of them are valid terms for the Dominant. Sir/Ma'am means respect to someone, specially if you don't know who they are. Master/Mistress means in charge, owner if you will. Lord or Lady is also one in charge, but to me I get the Lord of a Manor picture or a Medieval Castle.
