i also grew up to call older men 'sir' and i work in retail so all male customers get called 'sir' without thought. It's just being polite, you know?

However, when i use that word to address my Master, it is "Sir" not 'sir'. i like that i can call Him that on the phone or in public and people will chalk it up to joking or politeness or whatever.

i call Him 'my Master' not just 'Master' as well. "Good Morning, my Master!" for example. i rarely use His name -- in fact it is hard for me to do without using the word Master in front of it.  And i had once thought i'd never be able to call anyone that with a straight face! i'm still not sure i could keep a straight face when using 'Lord'.

But to me, it isn't about the title, it is about the respect in the voice when you use it, the respect implied. When i do use His name, it is like a title to me. The respect is still there, it has to be.

I called my former dominant master and sir both. Then when I got together with my Daddy, he outlined what I would call him. I would never want to be with someone that I called sir, master, or lord. They seem distant to me, Daddy is a term of endearment that specifies a certain sort of relationship predicated on affection, even if I give him authority over me.

The above is just my opinion

She calls me Daddy for the most part, and responds to me with "Yes, Sir".  Or uses my given name.  No offense, Asher, but I just don't think I could hear her call me"Lord(insert name here)" and maintain a straight face.  But whatever works for you.

I chose "Lady" for the same reason.  Do you share those cookies?

So, I dont like the word SIR, It bugs me, and I think I know why...
I was mainly raised by my grandpa, he (until he retired) was a USMC Drill Sgt. Whenever anyone called him Sir, be it at the store or anywhere else, he would always give the same stock reply (Don't call me Sir, I work for a livin) To me, Sir implies someone who is given respect, Master implies someone who demands it, and Lord implies someone who constantly strives for it... Now, I'm not sayin that If you are called SIR or Master you havent earned respect, not by any stretch.. Im just saying, that of the 3, I prefer Lord... Because it makes me think of someone who is constantly taking care of *his* people... And I like that image.... What are your thoughts?

i honestly prefer sir, but then i was raised in a military household where it was you can say anything if you stick sir or ma'am on the end. i'm not allowed to call Him master due to His wishes, She wants me to refer to Him as master but will respect his wishes. She does not want me to call Her any title whatsoever. i really don't like the word lord, it makes me want to giggle. when i'm topping/domming i prefer ma'am or even sir but again i think that may be the military thing kicking in.

On a daily basis, I call Him "Sir"; I refer to Him as "Master" to those in the know, as "Michael" to those that aren't. But I find, no matter how hard I try, I cannot call Him "Michael" to His face- it feels disrespectful. When He took me to meet His mother, He coached me for weeks, but I ended up just calling Him "baby" or "honey" on that trip. I would break out in giggles if I had to call Him by name.

In private, in those certain times, I have called Him many things- "Master", "Daddy", "Lord and Master" and yes, "my God" (whom I shall worship with all my soul forever...).

But, in general, "Sir" works for us.

I have called M all three. Sir is my common, everyday term for him, Master is used when we are on a more formal footing or higher protocol....m'Lord is a term used when is in a particular mindset, more animalistic, feral.

And I definitely agree about the tone of voice mattering more than how often a term is used in everyday life. I grew up with Sir and Ma'am, and I prefer Sir and Ma'am as forms of address but expect them to be used with respect.

the only person i address as "sir" would be retired-SGT Major (my dad)

other than that - i use neither words with my 2 dominants. i like calling one Daddy and the other Taurus or by his real name.

I choose to be called "Lady" .  Mistress has a connotation of " the other woman" for me .. and in a social gathering, if a submissive says Mistress a dozen heads turn to see who is being addressed.

I think of myself as a lady always and as I worked in Renaissance Faires for many years the title is natural for me.

I chuckle to myself online when I am addressed as Goddess ..and if addressed that way in person Im sure I would have a laughing fit and have to excuse myself to go perform the very unladylike task of changing my very um er .. pee infested panties. <EG>

The next time you speak to your Dad, make sure you tell him that I salute him for his service.  Having spend 5 years in the regular army as an MP and 6 years in the National Guard, I know what the deal is.

The guy who gives you your #1 combo meal from McDonald's is a "sir".

Yes I am, and don't you forget it! :-p

In the South, just about every stranger is sir or maam...

Back to topic, even though it's a little focused towards one gender...  I thought I'd give the outlook from my Owner and I...  We don't use titles at all.  She's "Insert DVs real name here" to me.  I don't respect her any less because she doesn't have a title, it's just the fact that all titles sound mechanical to me.
