I'd pay for the message boards. I wouldn't pay for the other side, but would still like to be able to see profiles of people who post.

Mod 11 said it, and it's actually not that hard to figure out, since they do not charge members, and didnt even have banner ads till about a year ago and the member count was at 300,000.

I dont see anything on my home page that says anything about how many members there are and since I havent been on the site more than a year how am I supposed to 'figure out' that they are losing money.
I didnt get a notice from MOD11 saying anything... where did this MOD11 post this informaiton? I would like to read it .

beargonewild -> RE: Pay for CM? (1/25/2008 2:45:55 PM)

Chances are, I'd probably whine a bit and then quickly pay a yearly membership!

Maestro66babycak -> RE: Pay for CM? (1/25/2008 3:02:07 PM)

Well I did see that very short post fromMOD11 that said the banners do not pay the bills.
I do not want this site to become a pay site, I love that it is free and anyone can join. It is the only site that I dont feel left out on. I mean  for example on alt.com you cant see any profiles unless you are a paying member or buy a one time view with points. So me not being a paying member has made me feel left out. I dont think a persons inability to pay should keep them from enjoying all the full benefits of a site like this one.

Well ty for that info 11, is there in the future plans to make this a pay site or set up for voluntary contributions.

No, there are no plans to turn this into a pay site, no matter whose sweet buns you bet.

You see, rioting serves a purpose.

I've been a resident here for 12 months (ish), and in accordance with UK law I'm claiming squatter's rights; which means you can't charge me a penny, and, 'truth be told, under said law I own this place.

As the new owner, it will be a £25 charge from hereonin. Anyone caught using the following will be charged £100: "WIIWD", "sub space", "sharing deeply" and "UMs".

ModeratorEleven -> RE: Pat for CM? (1/25/2008 5:47:03 PM)

You can claim squatter's rights on British Telecom's ar9-pos7-0.manchester5.broadband.bt.net router interface.  While you're at it, tell them they have an internal routing loop that should be checked out.

I don't even know what this means, but it made me laugh...  [:D]

NorthernGent -> RE: Pat for CM? (1/25/2008 6:08:02 PM)

I told them. They said "fuck off". I said, "fair enough".

That's that, then.

TheHeretic -> RE: Pat for CM? (1/25/2008 6:50:00 PM)

I'd throw into the pot once a year to keep the privilege of fun conversation (and creating a little mayhem now and then) around here.

As for less moderation, once in a while it would be nice to just tell some blankety-blank-blank-blanking piece of blank to take his blanking blank blank blank and blank it blank in his blanking blank slow and sideways.  But it would probably cut down on the number of people willing to join the discussion.

lighthearted -> RE: Pat for CM? (1/25/2008 7:21:19 PM)

I'm still laughing about "sausage party"...

I might be willing to pay $10, only because I already know what CM is like.  but if it was an unknown to me, probably not.  I'd be afraid of it being like alt, which I'm not particularly fond of.  plus, being female, I'm not so keen on paying for the sausage party anyway.

petdave -> RE: Pat for CM? (1/25/2008 7:45:25 PM)

Thing is, i've been on a lot of forums over the years, and noticed a trend:
-Free site: modest size, decent signal-to-noise
-Free site: membership snowballs, starts attracting more noise, more bandwidth/moderation/general upkeep required
-Unobtrusive advertisements added to cover increased expenses
-More features added to offset advertisement noise <=== you are here
-Site solicits donations/voluntary supporters, usually identified by a banner; most "core" posters contribute the first time, far fewer the following year
-"Premium Membership" introduced to remove ads, more obtrusive ads phased in for "basic members", more features added, often in a diminishing-returns sort of way: Some quality members leave on "ain't payin' fer shit!" principle
-Basic membership reduced to view-only, or all-but-worthless level, and advertisements are added to "premium membership." "Platinum membership" sometimes introduced, like old "Premium membership", but more expensive
-Additional features/hacker activity drawn by income/poor coding bring down site for extended periods, repeatedly: most "core" posters leave
-Site either ambles on with poor signal-to-noise, as people pay to join only to find out that it's not worth joining, or shuts down because it's no longer profitable (even though it wasn't profitable in the first place)

Because i'm the jaded sort, i don't pay for discussions due to the above... seems like what you pay for usually ends up not being as good as what you were getting for free.

The "other side" is a non-issue either way for me... i check in once a day or so, see no messages, check the "who's on" list for interesting names, leave...

Does this broken internal routing loop explain why NG keeps regurgitating the same nonsense?

Concerned people want to know

Raechard -> RE: Pat for CM? (1/26/2008 4:37:38 AM)

I wouldn’t pay myself but I wouldn’t go elsewhere either. I think the site would do well as a paysite I just don’t think I can in good conscience spend money on internet searching when I don’t see it as a good way of getting results in general. I’ve never had much faith in the argument that quality improves if people are paying to seek. Whilst it is true some would take it more seriously if they paid there are also those that have plenty of time and financial resources to spend mucking people about as a hobby and a relief from their stressful lives. Specialised internet dating sites are flawed for the majority of people because whilst it’s true it brings like minds together the bodies of those minds are usually thousands of miles apart.

There is a reason for that I feel.[8|]

That was my cliché of the day.

That's what I thought; on the positive side, it took less than the usual four and a half hours to arrive at an agreement with them.

In their defence, they had a mud bath waiting for them to roll around in, so I quickly realised I was fighting a losing battle and chose to accept my fate.
