sexyred1 -> I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 3:24:31 PM)

...but I really need one. I am talking about a group hug, a word of sympathy, a sweet whisper, a distraction, even some good advice or even some funny sarcasm and I promise I will never ask again, but this is a biggie:

Today I lost my new job that I had for 2 weeks. I was perfect for the market and this company was the most oppressive, hostile work environment I have had the displeasure of being in, plus it was a total boy's club (no offense, since I love boys, but not this neanderthal crew).

I was downsized back in October but cool because that was a private equity takeover and had severance, so no pain, no problem.

I took my time, weighed 3 different offers and took this job and today, after being treated like crap for two weeks and STILL making strong sales, I was told that I was late too many times. I had had oral surgery 3 weeks ago, which they knew about and had to have many, many doctor's visits as follow ups. I had some in the mornings (which my boss approved), most during my lunch hour and now they threw that in my face and said since they were an "at will" company, they felt I was taking advantage of them.

Oh, and I stayed late at work to make up for any lateness, but that was not noted. Of course.

Oh, and I did not get along with one of the guys on my team who was supposed to train me (ironic, train me, get it?) He was so stupid, he could barely speak.

Anyway, no severance, nothing.  [:(]

Please just kill me now since I have to start interviewing again. Just do it painlessly.[&o][:o]

*hugs* red....  hope things turn around for you soonest.  The situation sucks (been there)...

and as trite as this may sound, I truly believe that everything happens FOR a reason, and IN THE TIME it is meant to... so hopefully this is the open door to something fantastic!

Tell them to "make note of it" or you'll sue them.

Awwww sorry red. It is an awful thing to go through. And I know it is easy to say - but you are going to feel so much better when you are working somewhere where you are appreciated as you should be. I predict, that when you look back on this, you will see it as a blessing:)

LadyEllen -> RE: I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 3:35:07 PM)

Red - having been through the same thing myself I offer you my sympathies - and more positively the assurance that whatever new job you get it will be far and away better. After all, having endured crap with this bunch of SOBs, anything's going to be better!

May I ask? What is it that youre so good at selling, and is this something specialist or are your skills transferable to selling anything?

domahpet -> RE: I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 3:35:58 PM)

i feel you Red, same thing happened to me last summer. my boss was the biggest B**** ever, and wasnt even holding a certification for the position she works (I have one)
at will means if we dont like you we can fuck you off At Will
suck it up, i know interviewing sucks, but now you know what to look out for!
ask to go out on the floor and meet some of you potential
co-workers next time, then youll have a heads up if youre offered the postition.
you can do it, ive got total confidance in you!
ps, heres a hug (((((((((((((((((((((((((Red)))))))))))))))))))))))

good luck!!!!

I am in advertising sales; I primarily sell advertising in print pubications and online and have done so in various industries and for very high level accounts.

I believe my skills are transferable to sell anything, but unfortunately, companies are averse to "risk", meaning they want your background to be in exactly what their industry is. For example, if I want to sell Pharmaceutical products, of course I could. But the pharm companies would not hire me because they see all media on my background, despite the fact that among the industries I sold advertising and marketing solutions to, was Pharma.

It is ludicrous, but as in housing, it is a buyers market when it comes to employers.

That is why I never use headhunters because they get narrow parameters for candidates. I always sell myself and my skillset much better and always get jobs on my own effort.

But I am becoming very disenchanted with the way my media business has evolved over the years, these companies are all owned or are being bought by private equity and holding companies that use metrics instead of recognizing the individual art of sales.

I am a very free spirit when it comes to sales and not into the corporate crap.

I am so sorry to hear that.  I was in a similar situation not too long ago, and I agree...everything happens for a reason.  The same thing happening to me (including my supposed "trainer" being a real ass hat) was what prompted me to go back to school.  Best of luck with your interviews!

LadyEllen -> RE: I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 3:47:04 PM)

Thanks Red. I think where youre maybe going wrong is in not sucking up all that corporate crap - seems to be a requirement these days. Not sure what employers think the benefit is - it just means more pissed off employees.

And I really identify with the "box and label" thing - I would have loved to get out of this industry, but its just not possible. They see transport and logistics and thats what I am, forever and ever. So, I did them all over and started my own company in the industry where I dont have to suck up the corporate crap or put up with asshole bosses!

I was wondering whether you couldnt freelance? Given the "global sales environment" I wondered about selling adverts in third party publications as an agent, to companies overseas wanting to break the US market?

big warm hugs to you red!!  Being the annoying optimistic type, i have no doubt that you will only move on to a job that is a better fit, and will appreciate you!

I do understand what you are saying Lady Ellen and I have learned to play the corporate game way better than I used to. I got away with it for all these years because I sell literally millions of dollar worth of media.

I have considered going solo as a independent rep and that is also problematic, you need clients and a good base of them and that is usually commission only. I always work with a good base salary, plus commission and benefits.

So, I have some thinking to do. But you agree that you get pigeon-holed. I call it the "golden handcuffs". You get to a certain level in your chosen field, command a certain amount of money and then if you try to move, even in an ancillary way, they don't want to pay you what you are worth. Even in comparable jobs now, I am told I am too high priced.

Damn, I'm so sorry to hear that, Red.  You've certainly got a lot going for you and to offer - your communication skills and intelligence and confidence (so important in sales) will get you another offer soon.  Hopefully this bump in the road leads to a fantastic position for you.

Not sure how it works in your industry - I guess what made it easier for me was that clients tend to be personally loyal in our sector, even if the company is actually who's billing them. When I moved company, clients wanted to continue to deal with me so switched company too.

Anyway, like I said you'll be fine and within a short time will be looking back at all this with humour. Honest.

Thanks, everyone. You know I am usually breezy and funny on the boards, but today...I just needed a HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

ThinkingKitten -> RE: I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 4:05:58 PM)

Clearly you were just too good for them (too efficient, too effective, too successful), and the guys knew it, and figured they'd better get rid of you before you showed them up. But really, although you turned down the other offers for these assholes, you only invested a short period of time (which isn't much in the grand scale of things), so you should have yourself a small celebration and thank the powers that be for delivering you from them quickly!

If the other places wanted you.... they may still want you, so it might not hurt to make a subtle enquiry or two.

Chin up. Start your own company, be the boss and set your own price. If you're good, it'll work.

mstrj69 -> RE: I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 4:28:00 PM)

I will give you an online hug red as I am not close enough for a real hug.
I know what you mean when you say you are too expensive.  I was an accountant and when I was asked to leave after 15 years, nobody else wanted to take a chance on me because of my experience, abilities and the salary I wanted.  I finally turned it around and instead of working for an accounting firm, I took a lower salary and went to work for a company as their accountant.  I had already realized that the benefits were worth way more than the actual salary.
Instead of selling, could you get into the buying side as you already know what the sellers want and will give up to get your business ?  Just an idea that might work.

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: I Think You Can Only Ask for This Once a Year on Collarme.... (1/25/2008 4:33:50 PM)

HUGS red, hugs her again, you are probably too damm good for them anyhow, take a nice long hot bath, a glass of wine and kick back tomorrow will be a better day...I promise.
