Forgive me if this is a rather provocative subject but I've been curious about it. I've recently been giving some very serious thought to Judaism after being raised in a very strict and conservative Christian family. I'm currently trying to reconcile my lifestyle choices with my personal beliefs. This is a more curious note than one of troubled discontent. I don't feel that you can't be both a good Jew/Christian/Buddhist/Etc and live the lifestyle, as a point of interest I think you can live both in harmony. My question is more of a curiousity to see if anyone out here practices any established religion and how they fit the two pieces of themselves together in harmony. Personally I do not see a problem with being a Jewish man and a submissive to my Master. Though I think it does help that he's Jewish as well, and we're both exploring that new aspect of our lives together. I should probably note that this is Reform Judaism which is a much more accepting and inclusive sect than Orthodox Judaism, Roman Catholic, or Concervative Christianity. The only possible discord I could foresee is that my Master will be submissive in a way to Yahweh, but the way I see it he submits to Yahweh and I submit to my Master and he helps guide me in our exploration of faith. I'd just like to hear opinions from any practicing members of any religion, if any. Don't take that to mean that I believe the lot of you are all godless heathans, since I don't judge anyone on the basis of what religion they feel is right for them if any at all. A disclaimer of sorts: I do not intend for this thread to be a debate about the validity of any religion so any "God sucks and does not exist" statements can be witheld, please.

I'm a Reconstructionist Jew. He is nonreligious, raised Baptist and very against any strict doctrine. What I can tell you about myself is that I have no problems reconciling my religion and my relationship. In Torah study a couple of years ago we discussed a passage about unnatural behavior. The Rabbi discussed it in relation to homosexuality and explained that Reconstructionists interpret the phrase as it being wrong to behave in a way that does not match your innate self. Therefore a homosexual who stays in the closet is being unnatural to him or herself. I consider that not being in a D/s relationship would be unnatural to me. Not sufficiently knowledgable on Reform to know how they feel about it. However I can't recommend enough looking for a Reconstructionist synagogue.

all depends on your view point - most faiths (not religions thats different kettle of fish) believe "treat others with respect" or "do to others as you would want done to do" etc... remeber BDSM is about consent - its not anything taken by force or abuse ie rape or domentic violence - BDSM is about a relationship firstly and the kink second. This has been very helpful to see. For the replies so far I give my thanks, as well as the links suggested. I've not heard of Reconstructionist before so I am definitely looking into that further.

My Master and I are both Christian, and we do not see any conflict with WIITWD and being a Christian.

This need not be a cause for discord. Even kings serve. Whether one looks to Yahweh, Yeshua, Allah, or any other Deity, serving humbly and walking a spiritual path does not detract from your Master's rule over you.

I wouldn't think so either, so very good point. I shouldn't let others dictate my own status as much as I sometimes do. I suppose being new to this scene and seeing all the...prodoms, if that is the term I am thinking of...who act very militant and strict makes me feel a little out of sorts. My Master is quite a humble man, but he isn't soft or unable to punish me when I deserve it, I guess I'm just a little concerned for him being downtrodden by those that would see him as too meek to be a Dominant. Then again he isn't one to conform to other's oppinion so this is probably pointless worry. -Brian.

Brian - my Master is one of the most laid back, soft spoken people I know or that any of our circle knows. and yet he knows how to control my world as he needs. To be honest, if he was the militant kind, I could not be submissive to him - thats just my nature. I am submissive to Him becuase of who He is as a person and what he is capable of making me do. I agree...if Jack ever became too domineering I think I wouldn't feel the same way I do about him now. He doesn't have to crack the whip to gain my respect and obedience. Of course we sometimes play where I disobey him teasingly and he gets to punish me a bit, but I don't think he ever needs to enforce my obedience through violence ever. Maybe my perception of the scene is a little skewed, after all I come from a family where being out of the norm is a sin punishable by hell fire. I can't wait until they find out I've become a collared gay Jew. I do believe my grandmother would stroke out.

in most Jewish households the woman runs the family and the man usually defers to her. So between the Jewish guilt and the domineering wife. BDSM has been a stable in Jewish life for years.

You can take any belief system and adopt it to fit what you want it to. (BDSM included.) You can interpret anything to fit your desires. You can make "God" have whatever values you do. You can edit it any way you want. You can ignore any part you want. You can add any part you want. If you want a religion, just make the one you want. You can believe whatever you like. If you want to be a Christian into BDSM, just make it so God has values that are more compatiable with BDSM and ignore things that are against it. You want God to be female? Bam! She's having holy periods of wrath on sinners every fourth week of the month. You want to be special? Bam! God listens to you when you talk to her and you can interpret little things in life to be what she's saying back to you, or listen to her as a voice in your head; just look out on that fourth week! Most people tend to start from a template, typically their notion of a "mainstream religion", then editting it to suit them.

I am pagan..I was raised Southern Baptist, Catholic...and Pagan...depending on which side of the family I was with. I went to different Montessori middle schools and two different high schools (one Christian and one an all girls Catholic school) I have never found that anything said, written or taught goes against most BDsM lifestyles.... I was raised exposed to both Jewish and Catholic religions. I choose to believe in God not a formatted religious sect per se. I call myself a recovering Catholic. Master is Pagan and has his own belief system. However both of us see a need for a healthy spiritual life and we can accept that while its all the same entity , its just different paths of getting there. So Mazel tov!
