I think "The Day the Earth Stood Still" made some very good commiments on our Socitey.  As for 2001 I have trouble staying awake.

Why the "Andromeda Strain?" Well, it's because the movie is actually about the scientific method. As such, it's what I consider a science fiction film. They find an alien life form, the isolate it, and begin to systematically examine it. The theme of the film could probably be said to be: "The best laid plans..."

I love Bradbury as much as anyone. (The guy is from near my hometown in Illinois) And I've met Mr. Bradbury a couple of times. But I still think his brand of fiction is soft science fiction, while Andromeda Strain is an example of HARD science fiction.

In a way Rocky Horror pointed out the hilarities of life and the coincidences that may happen by fate or by some predestined whim (Dr. FrankNFurter). That playing God (Rocky Horror) has undetermined results that may not always work out for what you want but for another cause all while hitting high notes, heels, and lots of corsets :)

I'm kinda with bipolarber on this one- Star Wars is fantasy with sci-fi trappings.  Simple definition-if it's got magic- it's fantasy.  I wasn't real fond of any of the movies- liked the last one the best though.

I went with 2001- although I know that most film critics, being functionally illiterate, have no idea where its from.  Try reading Thus Spake Zarathustra by Nietzche- it's a modernized version on man's ascent to something else and for Nietzche, it's rather readable. A broad hint was the music- Also Sprach Zarathustra- Kubrick was no dummy- he chose things well.  Clarke's screenplay is useless, although his novel Childhood's End is actually on a similar theme.  However, it's really tough to put such a complex philosophical theme to film and I have to admit it's not necessarily all that accessible- should you have to read a book to understand a movie?  The first matrix movie is the old Bishop Barclay argument about a brain in a jar- shoulda quit while they were ahead- the rest of the series takes itself way too seriously.

I thought Lighthearted's comment about No Plan 9 was cute as well as some of the other snarky comments-and in that vein- what, no Damnation Alley?  Its got George Peppard, Jan Michael Vincent and swarming cockroaches and the wackiest cross country vehicle ever- what more could you want?  And Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce with Naked Space Aliens!  (actually, Mathilda May is both very attractive and a fine actor.)

For the folks that might want to do some more pondering-

Another of Kubricks masterpieces that didn't make the list-A Clockwork Orange.

In the horror vein- but absolutely sci-fi (based on John W. Campbell's Who Goes There) John Carpenter's remake of the Thing.  The first one gets comical- the second version is Carpenters pick for his scariest movie and having seen it in the theatre- it gets my vote as the scariest movie ever.  They Live has a great soundtrack, and Village of the Damned is rather underrated- hokey in spots, but nevertheless somewhat thought provoking.

Another good underrated horror flick- H.P. Lovecraft's Reanimator as is The Hidden.

In the time travel vein- how about Time after Time?  I've always like Nicholas Meyer- he's the guy that wrote the screenplay to Wrath of Khan and one of my favorite movies- the Seven Per Cent Solution- which in some ways, also counts as sci-fi- being an imagining of what happens when Sherlock Holmes meets Sigmund Freud.

Nobody's mentioned Harry Harrison's brilliant Soylent Green- guarantee you'll never eat a steak in the same way afterwards.

On the list...It is an easy choice. Blade Runner. It still holds up today...Great story, good acting. Rutger Hauer at his absolute best. Which actually probably isn't saying much...lol. A visually stunning film...Very compelling with great dialogue.

Perused the "other choices" ...I really enjoyed John Carpenter's rendition of "The Thing"...Might fall a little more on the horror side of the cinematic equation.

She is kinda pushy, isn't she? Breathtakingly beautiful, though.

Close Encounters used to be my number one. It has since been replaced by Contact with Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaghey. Love the tug-of-war between religion and science.

And The Abyss kinda stands out too.

I picked Star Wars because of this:

As the trailers were being shown on TV, I was saying to myself, "Darn! I really want to see this movie, but I bet I'll have to do it alone." My roommate didn't really like science fiction movies. She was in San Diego on her two-week Naval Reserve service, so I couldn't talk her into it.

She came back from active duty, and almost the first thing she said after putting her bags in her room was, "There's a movie coming out that I'd really like to see. You're not gonna believe this - it's a sci-fi movie."

So we saw the movie - from the second row. My neck hurt for almost a week afterwards from craning it to see the screen. The sound effects were absolutely stunning, and the visual effects - when they went into hyperspace the audience cheered and applauded. Hey, you gotta remember this stuff was all new. I've seen the movie since, and thought the effects looked rather cheesy - but endearing because they were ahead of other movies of its time.

Good memories, sounds like

The line running outside the theater to see Star Wars was the longest one I've ever stood in.

Phew, yeah, to the confessional with ye......

I guess we all have things like that we love. I was a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica, Space: 1999, and the Buck Rogers tv shows.....

OK- the new Battlestar Galactica is nothing to be embarassed about- the old one, well, that's another matter.  But Space 1999?  That was so awful it made Lost in Space seem  brilliant.  You should hang your head in shame.....but how could anyone not fall in love with Erin Gray? She had to be one of the most stunning women ever as either a blonde or a brunette.....

I liked RoboCop too- it was much better than Starship Troopers.  I keep hoping they're going to make a good Heinlein movie, although the Puppetmasters wasn't bad.  Had the same problem as the book- the pacing is off.

Just an afterthought... Alien (and sequels) was a very good flick, but it scared the bejeebers out of me as a kid.  Star Wars - I can watch over and over and never tire of them.

I chose Blade Runner -- but it's really a toss up for me.  The Island (2005)

Directed by Michael Bay, with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson was exceptional, too.
