As much as I enjoyed "The Terminator", I just can't vote against "The Matrix".  Loads of martial arts, guns, violence, the special effects, a really cool storyline, and lots of fetish clothing...what could be better? [:D]

brainiacsub -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 4:55:57 PM)

Level, I had to go with Star Wars but it was a difficult decision. Six of the movies you listed are in my Top 25 favorites of all time.

christine1 -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 4:59:54 PM)

i chose the terminator...i love those movies and the whole idea behind them.  the alien movies are a close second....and let's not forget about "predator"

lauren0221 -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 5:10:33 PM)

I chose Terminator as well. I love that movie.

Lashra -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 5:57:52 PM)

I LOVE science fiction so it was hard for me to pick, I went with Star Wars but Aliens and Terminator kept calling to me too...

The last Matrix ruined it for me i can't watch it anymore after that.
But the Star Wars (original) are timeless.

A very tough choice as all of them are favorites thought still have to go with Star Wars.

what?  no "Dune"?

and here I thought you was sumpthin special, Level...*sniff*

TheHeretic -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 7:07:55 PM)

I'm most drawn to science fiction that explores the social developments (or regressions).  Martial arts and gunfights make it an action flick.  I went with Blade Runner in the poll, but I'd also add, Starship Troopers, Bicentennial Man, I Robot, and, without a spaceship to be seen, Children of Men.  If only someone could come up with a good treatment of Foundation.

Rocky Horror Picture Show! [8D]

Actually, my write-in is for Serenity

Awwww, Level, why the pale exhausted face? Been watching too many Sci Fi DVDs?

I voted for Blade Runner. It has everything a good science fiction film should have: beautiful photography, a BRILLIANT screenplay, captivating characters... and Harrison Ford. I can't wait to see the final cut (made by Ridley Scott, not by movie executives). I wonder why, though, most science fiction presents the future of humanity as dystopian. Any thought, anybody?

PS: while 2001 is listed as a Sci Fi movie, I never really considered it to be one. It's more an out of body experience than a movie (my mother took me to see it when I was 10, having convinced me it was 'just like Star Wars'. Hmmmm...). But now, having grown a little, I love it.

sweetwenchie -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 8:20:59 PM)

as an ex magenta.. i like petdave's response!   [;)]   Now how in the hell am i supposed to choose just one?  i went with Blade Runner... but that lovely piece of eye candy Keanu almost made me click Matrix.  Love the Alien series, but consider that more of a crossover into the Horror genre.

lilsubl -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 8:52:44 PM)

these are all much too recent...what about The Invisible Man, the original from 1933 with Claude Raines?  The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, from 1920?  those were really scary...& the one i saw in my neighborhood theater when it was first released, the original, The Blob!!!!

Marc2b -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 9:01:05 PM)

... Aliens, with an honorable mention to Logan’s Run. I loved the scenes in the deserted Washington but mostly I loved the idea of a society where you can turn a dial and have a half naked hot chick appear in your living room – you gotta love it! Granted there was a down side to that society (the whole dying when you turn thirty thing).

The people who made that movie deserve to be hung upside-down from their genitals and then beaten with barbed wire.  The book on the otherhand is the greatest sci-fi book ever.

I agree about Dune; the movie was a total waste but the book absolutly rocked.

As to the op...it's a toss up between two for me...

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
and
Planet of the Apes ( the original with Charleton Heston , not the remake [:'(] )

KnOcala -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 11:13:02 PM)

I had to vote for Star Wars taking in the effect it had world wide
and how cool I though it was back in the 70's

TheHeretic -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 11:25:43 PM)

The Sci-Fi channel did a Dune mini-series which is available on DVD.  The fx leave something to be desired, but the indoor sets, costumes and acting are quite good.  Worth a rainy Saturday/sick day marathon.
