Have you ever pondered the serious nature of being 'property"

I've pondered the nature of owning someone as property and what that means to me personally.

quote:

I am seeing more and more descriptions by submissives that describe themselves as property of_____. Does the mindset of being property truely hit with a high level of conscienceness or it it a growing fashion on the path be refer to the relationship as property?

In all honesty.... I really don't give a damn.  I'm not being snarky at all in that remark, I'm serious... I just don't care.  I have no doubts some are throwing it around because it sounds cool, or because they have overly romanticized notions, or just a deep craving and need to "belong".  We've all got our motivations for what we do... whatever that is.  Maybe I'm just mellowing with age, or maybe its that I've got so much on my plate these days... but I find I really just don't care anymore whether what others are doing in this "lifestyle" is a fad, real, fake, or whatever... it doesn't affect me and it doesn't matter to me.

What matters to me is doing what works for me, which I am.  Also, finding those who share that... and that's the tricky bit.  But so far as sitting here wondering if Master Bob and slave Jane are living a "owner / owned" lifestyle as I personally define it... or even as anyone else defines it... I really just don't give a damn.  I wish'em happiness and I wish they'd keep their nose out of my business... but beyond that, nope, just don't care.

Probably not the sort of reply anyone was looking for, and might even surprise a few to hear it coming from me.  2007 was a year of change for me... I suppose this is one of the effects.

Padriag, I agree with you. At the end of the day it matters not if anyone else thinks I'm owned....What matters is, if my Master and I believe I am owned.

I am SO glad to see some who don't take this crap so seriously.  I have found that those who worry most about "who is and isn't property" and or whine about "gee, bdsm isn't what it was yesterday when I started" tend to be the ones with the shallowest relationships or are people I wouldn't want to associate with.

The ones who worry least about what the next person is doing and instead spend their time and attention on their partner often have the deepest and most fulfilling relationships.

Funny this should be a thread tonight as I came to my office to write about how I see "property"...and the gloves come off!

DesFIP -> RE: The Characteristics of being "property" (1/28/2008 4:40:57 AM)

It's oneupmanship. Part of that I'm a slave not a sub or master not dom, therefore I'm more twue than you. After all, how can you oneup someone who has a 'slavebelly' except by saying you're beyond being a slave, you're more twue because you're property.

The ones who claim they are property, yet don't even live together, have known each other for a matter of months ldr only, proclaim it so loud and often that you have to think "the lady(gent) doth profess". Saying you're something doesn't make it so. It just makes you look like a twit.

About owning a daog. People often make that mistake that gaining a dog's attention is easy. Dogs frequently have affectionate natures, but only show them to people they like. No dog comes to someone it doesn't like for affection.

The beauty of BDSM is it's ability to be created and recreated by those practicing it. Everyone has their own definitions of their roles, their kinks, their lifestyles, and it can all be classified as BDSM. i have issues with people who are all balls-to-the-wall "My definition is the ONLY definition", but to each his own. As long as the defintions work for you and yours, that's the only thing that matters.

It's pointless to let others try and define you - you have to do that for yourself. If you find something that works, and it works for whomever your with, then you've found something wonderful that should be cherished.

You took the words out of my mouth Des, how did you know what I wanted to say? When I say things like this, I get accused of being too "snarky", or the traditionally used, "you are without a Master, so you must be jealous or not understand the twue meaning of being owned".

And when I read that, I hear the voice of Charlie Brown's teacher in background, wah wah wah wah....

But most often I hear the Shakespeare line you used. [:D]

I'd like to thank Padriag and everyone else with similiar opinions. Being completely new to this lifestyle is somewhat of a large undertaking in my life and my Master is very much as new as I am. I know I shouldn't concern myself with what other people think but I find myself trying to fit a mold just to avoid looking "fake" or "not real" instead of just doing what I feel is right for me and my Master. I've managed to get over that idealistic trend of what a good submissive looks like and have been moving toward what a good submissive is in terms of how my Master and I see it. The irony of it all is that while I was trying to fit in and be "real" I was becoming more and more "fake" to myself. I think, in the end, I'd rather be "fake" to a group of people and real to myself than real to a group of people and fake to myself. Which, coincidentally, is why I got out of that stuffy closet. I was almost to Narnia before I realized it.

-Brian.

I’ve noticed a group of wise posters… Doms, submissives and switches who realize we are only a cross section of the population who share an interest in BDSM. Trying to fit anyone or exclude anyone from anything is forged. There is no initiation or title required to join the common sense group.

That would make an awesome tag line!

Redoubt,

Good observation but the point is not how we or a third person would be describe but rather how they the individual describe themselves.
For my part I do not believe it exists beyound the spoken word.

MercTech -> RE: The Characteristics of being "property" (1/28/2008 8:06:09 AM)

Every time I hear somone describing themselves as "property" I remember being at the old swimmin hole at a motorcycle ralley.

On naked little nymph had a tatoo on the left cheek of her ass... "Owned and Operated by Tank, Renegades Motorcycle Club"

She was his to use, to be loaned out to brothers, and to service anyone he told her to.  She fetched beer, polished the bike, cooked his meals.  And waited patiently when he went off with someone else.  She was his property.
