{begin rant}

This is related to the terrible, terrible tragedy in the Southeast US.

Myself and one of my co-workers and friends want to do something to help, so we were going to make trips from our home here in Austin, TX to either the Astrodome in Houston, or maybe as far as to Louisiana to help people get to shelters. We called a local van rental company here (perhaps I shouldn't say the name) and here is the conversation that followed.

Us: "We're trying to help the refugees and we were wondering if you might donate a couple of passenger vans so we can help people get to shelter."

Ass: "Well I'm not donating anything, but I'll give you 3% off the price of the rental."

Us: "We're not asking for free gas, we just want a break on the rental, we'll pay the gas out of our pockets."

Ass (with great contempt): "Well sorry, I have to make my money."

Me: "Fuck you." {click}

This was likely the owner of the company or someone close to the owner (he certainly presented himself as someone higher up in this establishment), as it's a fairly small one.

Mind you, I don't know a single person in Lousiana or Mississippi, and neither does my friend. I am not personally affected by this tragedy. I'm sitting in my nice quiet suburban house, listening to my kids argue over someone touching their stuff, and thinking about turning up the AC because it's hot in my office. There are people that have nothing except clothes that they found floating in feces laden floodwater, desperate for just water and food, and this "business owner" couldn't spare a couple of rentals for a day or two to help these folks find shelter and dignity, two guys that actually possess some compassion for people in a time of need, because he needs to "make his money."

That level of contempt is mind blowing.

{end rant}

Yep, I agree. I wasn't surprised, just disappointed. Well at least there are still people that care.

I don't think your response was warranted. The hurricane and the ensuing mess aren't this guy's fault. And he DID offer you a break on the rental. If you had been polite to him, you might have been able to talk him into more of a discount.

All in all, I think you acted like more of an ass than he did.

Are you saying that you could not afford the rental rate, and that's why you asked him to donate?

Am I wrong to assume with the above statement that you have a credit card you could have used to rent said vans and pay for it yourself?
I would love it if everyone was pitching in, but this particular man doesn't owe it to contribute $100s out of his pocket if he doesn't feel like it. M

The guy offers you a discount on the rental and then you tell him you're not asking for free gas, you just want a break on the rental? Umm...he offered you what you said you wanted - a break on th rental. What's with the comment about free gas? Or when you said "break" did you mean FREE? He's under no obligation to give you a free van just because you ask and for all you know he may already be contributing to the relief efforts in some way. There's definitely an "Ass of the Day" but I'm not sure he was on the other end of the phone.

hmmmm...lessee here

A guy gets a phone call asking him to "donate" a couple vehicles for a humanitarian cause. Could be legit or could be a scamster taking advantage of the misfortune of others. The guy being solicited responds with caution to this voice on the phone and is rewarded with an obscenity, thus reinforcing his suspicion that the caller was insincere.

I hope this was a learning experience for you.

It has been said on every news broadcast i have heard in regards to people wanting to help... go with a reputable organization as a volunteer.

Red Cross..... they will transport you and use your services rather than you trying to find the bet way to help...besides how do you know how best to help?

i agree with others and esp DesertRat...you sort of made an ass of yourself...... i learned long ago, persistence, politeness, perspective, and alot of kindness works wonders..esp in person.

Not to mention if he's local, he likely has a far less ability to take risks and lose money.

Say hi to my sweetie in Austin :)

He did you a huge favor. I live on the NC coast and have been involved with relief efforts. As soon as you got to the first check point you would have been turned around and sent back to where you came from. The last thing they need right now is a bunch of suburban do-gooders clogging the highway.

I think humanitarian aid is best left to professionals who don't respond with "fuck you" to what the prospective donor has to offer. Any discount is a gift, and should be accepted or rejected with gratitude. Please reserve your contempt for the government.

Small businesses and middle-class taxpayers shoulder the brunt of the tax burden. Even if you think it's part of a big chain, you have to consider that the person you are talking to may be only a franchise holder.

No reason to beat yourself up.... at least you had good intentions. You just went about it the wrong way.

If I didn't get what wanted after the first try, I'd always keep the negotiations open and never burn any bridges.

The other thing I would tell you, is with a lot of these Van/truck rental centers, the ''owner'' per se is nothing more than just a leasing agent who works off a commission. He doesn't actually ''own'' the equipment or vehicles.

Most of the newer rental vehicles all have transponders that work off a GPS system, so the leasing agent is kept honest and held accountable for all the vehicle's movements. Unless he moved through corporate channels, he'd probably have to pay for it out of his own pocket.

I was also going to suggest the American Red Cross. They will put you through training. I think there is a committment of 2 or 3 weeks though. I'm not sure on that and I don't know if those requirements change during times of emergency, when they are recruiting many people to help them.

Good luck.

In follow-up to KatyLied

You can volunteer for your local red cross and work what ever hours you are available, answering phones, putting together care packages...etc.

If you wish to travel to the devestated areas, you will go through a training period and then have to commit to three weeks at the site!

I visited the Red Cross and asked these same questions a few days ago.

Also, the only person I know from this site who lives in New Orleans is "Feline", I hope she is alright and if anyone here knows, can they post something to let me know?
I'm worried about her.

Do not beat yourself up over what is said. You have posted with honesty and from the heart. You expressed your feelings as they came to you and were honest in your opinion. Who has the right to come down on you for doing that? For being honest? Just because what you have said does not settle well with others, it is highly likely most people would have reacted in the same way and if everyone was as honest and open as yourself, they would understand your reaction, IMO.

I wonder how many people who look down on your attempt to do something you felt you had to do have bothered to volunteer? How many people have every felt the urge to 'do' something, yet never had the strength?

Ok, so maybe what you did might have faired better if you had tried differently - but maybe not. That scenario we will never know. But You have been true to yourself, you have been selfless and you have given. I don't think much else could have been asked of you. I for one, am blessed just by hearing of the endeavours of people like yourself - thank you.

No mistakes, only lessons learnt.

Peace and Much Love

As I read your dialogue, the first thing I see is the word "donate". That usually means "freebie". You were offered a discount. I was wondering why you changed that offer of a discount into a statement about free gas. That kind of came out of the blue, to Me.
But, as DesertRat said, unfortunately, in times such as this, a lot of scam artists come out of the woodwork who will try to take advantage of a situation. I know your heart was in the right place, but even as we advise people they should only donate through accredited organizations, the same types of advisements are in place for the many businesses, both big and small, who are being tapped now for any and all possible resources.
I see you are in Texas. Big state. Are you anywhere close to the several evacuee locations? Helping hands, as well as supplies, might be very welcome there.

I am in Austin, which is planned to be host to 5,000 evacuees. I actually work a mile or so from the main site for the relocated folks. The scene is somewhat surreal. My family has been gathering up anything that we can spare to donate, and i'll be dropping that stuff off tomorrow. I'm somewhat encouraged, I have contacted many of the volunteer organizations here in town, and they are overwhelmed with volunteers at the moment, so these poor people will be getting some help. but they will probably need volunteers for months, so I'm sure I will get my opportunity to help.

I appreciate the words of support from those that agreed with me, and also appreciate the words of dissent from those that didn't agree with my approach, as there were several points that were brought up that I had not thought about. In hindsight, I perhaps could have approached the situation more postively, but the images of people dying in the streets, and crawling through infected waters to save their lives and the lives of their children motivated me to the point of anger when that person displayed the impression that he just didn't care. But i'm a fiery individual, prone to fits of emotional outburst when dealing with a situation that I genuinely care about. So i'll do what I can to help those in need, and try not to curse anybody else out......but I an't makin any promises
