Lesbian BDSM - 1/29/2008 10:21:16 PM

Reading the ads from women placed on here, I noticed that every 3 or 4th one is for women looking only for women partners. I know from my reading of subculture histories and case studies that male gay culture has been influential in BDSM, but I have not heard of many lesbian influences. This makes me curious to know if BDSM has always been more popular among lesbian/bisexual women but underreported or is this reflecting a growing trend we are witnessing?

Did you know that their is a movement to ban the word lesbian, by the lesbians? They want to be called gayelle's. How do you feel about the title change? Does it mean anything to you?

Living in the United States, we are used to terms changing all the time. We are a nation that rebrands just about everything to suit someones purpose whether it is to sell cigarettes or to better identify a subset of a group. Personally, it does sound more euphonious, but the spelling might pose a problem. I wish them luck, but I don't think it will work without a big push from lesbians themselves.

Hmm I didnt get the memo.... Girls.. did you get the memo...

Fuck.. was I out that day?

Ahhhh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbian  If there is a more PC bunch of wankers the Auzzies.. I would hate to see it... no offence to my sane cousins from OZ.. but good freakin grief! These are the same dumb twats that wanted to ban the Store Santas from saying Ho ho ho at Christmas because it might offend some tart.

Do *not* make me come over there... I swear..

There is such a thing as too uptight and just plain stupid.

Sure, it was on the Logo channel that now has CBS news on it, that mainly just reports news involving gays

BDSM has been very popular in the Queer culture as a whole. Both with males and females. Since Leathermen usualy get a lot more press, and are out more in literature and magazines ( guys like porn.. what can I say.. hell even I like looking at the stuff they do) it seems to be a mainly gay male phenomenon.

Here is the thing.. lesbians ( I will be *damnned* if I will call us Gayelles.. *sighs*) are a very cliquish. We are generaly not "all out there"

With good reason... no need to be used as wank material for the masses. LOL

99.9 "lesbian porn" is made by guys for guys. Ya know what.. most lesbians unless they are seriously hard up do not watch the commercial stuff. The porn industry makes them to turn a buck.. not to depict realistic lesbian sex.

if i remember correctly i  think it was because gayelle was ore of a softer word and didn't sound as negative and also, because gayelle identified them more with being gay than the word lesbian does.

Did you really intend to ignore the OP's question and completely hijack this thread to something else??

OP:  I have a feeling, but no evidence to back it up, that it's simply been underreported.

right, no one answered you, OP. I am not gay, but have lesbian and bi friends and have done a ton of BDSM porn reading. I have read a lot of BDSM influences in lesbian/bi lit so I agree with Cali that it must be underreported. That is among my favorite BDSM stuff to read by the way.

Thanks. Now that everyone has access to the Internet that maybe this will help change some perceptions about BDSM in that the history might have a more female impact, no pun intended, than once thought. Lesbians, outside of porn depections, as a bdsm group might be more influential in the way the subculture is run and formed. I don't think that women who come on here only looking for women partners is doing it for my entertainment. The question I had was were they always involved or is this a recent trend.

I would suggests that if there's any underreported section of the population, it would be lesbians (strike one) who enjoy BDSM (strike two.)  Socially, you might as well be a Muslim named Saddam and a mustache.

(No offense intended to lesbians, Muslims, or folks named Saddam.)

I agree with this, but I think places like Collarme has raised their profile, which made me ask the question in the first place. There are all kinds of hidden histories that underreported, but at least now there is a means to address this.
