Thanks. Now that everyone has access to the Internet that maybe this will help change some perceptions about BDSM in that the history might have a more female impact, no pun intended, than once thought. Lesbians, outside of porn depections, as a bdsm group might be more influential in the way the subculture is run and formed. I don't think that women who come on here only looking for women partners is doing it for my entertainment. The question I had was were they always involved or is this a recent trend.

No it has always been there... in fact Sappho herself ( I have studied her history.. and I love the name Lesbian *because* of it ) could have been concidered the first well known Lesbian Domme.
She had a school for the arts, and taught young nubile girls... many of whom she had affairs with. Her students saw her as a strong powerful figure, and gave her much reverance.

At the time Male homosexuality was a matter of course. It was not looked apon as bad.. or hardly at all. You had your wife, who took care of your home.. and bore children. Then you had lovers male and sometimes female.
Even wives of the upper levels were known to have male lovers.. but female lovers were to be hush hush.

She broke that tradition and went from beloved artisan to reviled pervert. Her brother married a slave ( huge social no-no in upper mobile families ) and he didnt get 1/100th of the crap she did for loving women openly. She eventualy killed herself.

As with any sexual thing... just because of what's in your pants.. or who you love doesnt make it different for you necessarily. Human sexuality is so varried. SMBD has it's appeal to all facets of people.. nothing new.

I hope the brief history and explination helped explain.

Brain fade on the exact title (it's late) but "my life as a leather slave" or something like it, is a journaling of some 20 years + as a (lesbian) leather slave, african american too btw.

Well, i think that comes back to what Gwynvyd mentioned in her post (#10)... This may just be a way of separating the girls in "Lesbian Porn!"- impeccably made-up, surgically enhanced, breathy voices, boyfriends watching from off-stage, etc.- from the girls who are actually out there looking for other girls to move in with- crew cuts, flannel shirts, complaining about patriarchy, etc. It's simply a matter of reducing confusion.

Okay, it seems funny at 9 am, but somebody will probably flame the crap out of me for that Oh well.


As far as the OP goes, i've noticed that as well... i imagine you're looking at Dominant Women, right? i don't have an explanation for it, but i was really quite surprised by the numbers... Unless a bunch of them are actually men looking for a bit of girl-on-girl cyber roleplaying?

Status: offline 		I think lesbians on the whole tend to be alot more quiet about all things regarding their sexuality. I know I don't feel the need to run around advertising or slap any labels on my arse. For the most part I don't care who knows what, just don't need to run around waving any flags, demanding attention or special priviledges. Most of the people in my life know I am into women, kinda hard to miss that. Very few of them know any of the details of what we have done when we were alone together. No need for that.

As far as gayelle.......oh give me a BREAK! It sounds like some sort of hybrid gazelle or .........a dishsoap. Sheesh.

Status: offline 		What an interesting thread.  Esp when you first get up, lol.  Personally, as a lesbian, I have been aware of other lesbians into BDSM since I started some 13 years ago.  I guess if you are not one, then its harder to find us.  Its more of a cultural thing, in My eyes.  For example, here where I live, its a huge Italian population, in fact, I would say almost 80% if not more of My city are Italian.  But, someone coming here to visit a while, may not notice that, unless they could tell half the backyards have a Borella court, LOL.  Or, I know around here anyway, if you ask a striaght person what poppers are, they have a much different answer then gays.  Its all about which cultures you are part off, those are the ones you know.
 
As far as being called gayelle, that is the most stupid thing I have ever heard.  First of all, it will never happen, as far as that article states, its only one small group of girls.  I had never even heard of it until now.  Secondly as Gwyn already said, there is much history to the term lesbian.  Third off, there are better things that we should be fighting for, like the fact that we still can not even get married in most of the US. (Although that is no longer a problem here in Canada, Thank Sweet Jesus). And many other equal rights that we are not yet getting, but do deserve. 
 
I, for one, use the term dyke a lot.  Some dont like that, but I will use that one until I die, before I would ever use the term gayelle, cuz that term is, well, like My UM's say:
 
"Thats gay Mom, and not gay like you!"
