Okay, quick straw poll -

Regardless of our origin, how many of us have visited more than two foreign countries?

Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France (and drove through Belgium, but not counting that as visiting since we didnt stop).
And for the record, I've been to all the lower 48 states. (meaning I havent been to Alaska or Hawaii)

As an American who considers myself a patriot (yes, I was raised on the Pledge of Allegience, hand on heart, salute the flag), I think that this country, as a whole, has gotten a bit too big for our britches in many ways.  Call it hubris.  The fact that so many people were screaming "HOW DARE THEY" after 9/11, to me, only illustrates just how cocky we've (generic) gotten.
But what's GOOD about America?
Take a road trip...criss cross the country.  We have plains, mountains, deserts, tropical, tundra..name it, and we've got almost every kind of climate and landscape all wrapped up within our borders.
Visit the small towns. Where people still greet strangers with a hello and a smile (ok, you can find that in the big cities too, but I think it's mostly people who've moved there from the small towns that do it..LOL) and no ulterior motive.
I could go on, but I would like to see other Americans say what THEY think is good....

Andrea - Proud to be an American (which isn'tpreventing me from moving to the UK..LOL)

I quite agree with you. But that doesnt mean I like blanket statements that all americans are undereducated. There are undereducated people all over the world and educated ones
too.

Not all Americans are bible thumpers either, nor christian zealots.

edited to say: if it wasnt for your greedy tax the colonies up the yin-yang mentality, we'ldALL be Brits!!

The US is pretty much a bunch of under-educated people that are trained to wave the flag and self-righteously believe that God loves them more than the rest of the world.  The country has some of the highest obesity rates because of sugar, tobacco and junk food marketing. A country of sedentary yahoos glued to the TV.

Funny you say that. You wouldnt have the internet or the PC if it wasnt for those undereducated Americans. We are the creative innovators who dare to dream and try.

Except you didnt invent either, nor the railways or the telephone.

Actually, they did. Look it up. The Personal Computer was created by the 2 Steves. The founders of the Apple corporation. The first prototype of the World wide web was created by
Doug Engelbart who was born in Oregon in 1925 and created the mouse and the frist hypertext prototype. You can look that up too.

But surely you would want an educated butt to balance that popcorn on. Yes, Mistress?

Interesting.. I didn't know this was an American thing. (flag)
I didn't know other people thought this odd. I guess I just assumed that all countries loved their flag, and had a pledge too. Maybe I never really thought about it at all.
For me it is a symbol of our country. Standing together and reciting a pledge to that country is unifying in a land made up of immigrants from all over the world. It is a way to remember and respect those who died fighting for the freedom we came here for.
I have been to 2 other countries..Canada and Mexico...;) Never been to Europe, but would like to.
I worked with someone from England, and she said political cartoons there depict Americans with really big perfect teeth.. made me picture  Jimmy Carter .. here you might find crooked teeth on a drawing on someone from the UK
Maybe that's our gift to the world.. dental hygiene!

I'm fairly confident it's not exclusive to the United States. My point was/is that it's alien to us, for reasons that aren't important.

I've never seen such cartoons; I'd be amazed if they exist.

Though technically i'm Canadian, i do not deem it far that we generalize countries. As a joke it's one thing but when you really truly believe that an entire country's individuals are to blame for the actions of said country, to me it seems hypocritical.
In no way am i particularly proud of what America has been portrayed as, nor it's meddling, or a bunch of other things. But it's where i live. In no country will you not find someone excessively patriotic, excessively obese, excessively egotistical, or whatever other stereotype we have here.
And we aren't all "brainwashed" by the flag and the pledge.

I don't hate Americans, nor do I hate America as a whole. I dislike Americans who believe that America is the best country in the world in every possible faucet and all other countries are just jealous or copied them. I dislike the American government on the whole (not just Bush II I think what Roosevelt did in WWII was morally wrong, great politics but morally wrong). I like the American entertainment industry and I like that when an American fights for social change they normally get it done in the end.

Every country has its faults; personally I think that for a country with over 210,000,000 people they go alright.

Kitten,

I have to agree with you on the people should act on thier best behavior when outside of thier native country. 100% However I have seen people from just about every where acting like bastards or just sods. I live in Gods own shit box of the worlds Tourist trap.. second only to maybe Paris, and London... I live in Florida. *Gods help me*

Yes.. some Americans dress down.. esp. while on holiday. I can not blame them for that because they are on holiday relaxing.

However if you have ever been to parts of my dear country you would know not every one does that or lacks all fashion sense. In Naples Florida one does not walk out of the house to run to the store for a quart of milk with out full hair, make up, and matching ensemble. I know.. I just moved from there. One does not simply go about in T-shirts unless you are a laborer shipped in to work for the day. Needless to say, I got the fuck out of there. LOL

As far as Tourists here I have encountered I would say the Germans are the nicest, quietest bunch. They don't litter, they dont shout, or talk loudly on thier cell phones, they obey the traffic laws, and they are just *nice*

Gwyn

Me?
Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Finland, Tunisia, Morocco, India and Sri Lanka.

I don't  view that as being particularly well traveled actually - given the size of the planet that we inhabit - but a um slowed me down a lot.
I read somewhere that over 80% of Americans don't have a passport. If that IS true, then I'm a bit curious about the lack of desire/motivation to see the world outside.  No judgement, just not undertstanding of the mindset.

As for our past colonisation of other parts of the world, well I'm as embarrassed about it as anyone else (even though it was hundreds of years ago)- but you see of a lot the developed european nations at that time were at it - France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany to an extent. We just happened to be a lot better at it than a lot of them.

Most Americans dont feel that way and most of the country thinks Bush is the dumbest man whos ever been President. Most of us voted for Al Gore but somehow due to this crazy thing called the electoral college and something fishy in his brothers state (florida govenor), the dufas got in anyway and America still suffers.

Lived in 3 and visited over a dozen countries, something like 37 states (not the model but the mileage - eek!).

Oh, and two degrees ( not bad for a dummy).

Really LIVIN' in the southern bible belt (sadist in wonderland)

Still amazed that there are people that have never been out of a state in thier life, that bigotry, intolerance and racism still live.

With all the places I've been, all the things I've seen and done, the good and not so great considered, still - I chose to live here.   If we all liked the same things - damn, would the value of my real estate ever go up!

Yes, America plays big brother meddling and those driving it may or may not have ultruistic motives.  Yes the separation of church and state and personal rights and freedoms are being eroded here.  Yes we still have the death penalty while we hug trees and save the whales.  Yes, there may be better places in the world to live - if you went with lots of cash.  But no where in the world can you become what you are willing to work to become more so than in the USA. No, we aren't perfect.  Nothing of man is.

This is true. But then again, its become a pain in the arse as of late. Plus when you live in the US you can travel over 3,000 miles and still be in the US. I can also go to Puerto Rico, the US virgin Islands and hawaii and alaska without a passport. lets face it, at least here in winter, if I am spending the money, I travel the 1000 miles to balmy florida in february and spend less than 200 dollars on a round trip ticket. In Europe you need to have a passport to go to the neighboring state.

Yeah I know, I guess the fact i know is a testament to America's influence. The rest of the world watches the presidential race with baited breath any yet i would expect a large portion of Americans don't know or care who Australia's prime minister is (not that I would think less of them for it).

That has a lot to do with location and size. In Europe, you  can drive to many other countries.  These #'s have changed recently, now that you need a passport to go to Canada.
