C'mon Mod11, I think they're just doing it to be cool. To hijack a thread about hijacking threads. I think I kinda asked for it, I mean a place like this and all. What did I think was going to happen ?
Nice to see you here. My main question still begs an answer, how do you determine what is a malicious hijack rather than a tertiary remark ? Even n "aside" or a sidebar so to speak ? Is that not to be allowed ? I think that would be too confining.
So we are talking a great deal of discretion here and a judgement call on almost every post. I wonder if you might find that you have bitten off more than you can chew.
As much as it might bite me in the ass once in a while, I do appreciate your efforts here, you keep this forum from slipping down into a morass of petty bullshit as seen on some blogs. I will not express a positive or negative view of this new standard for posting, because sometimes I get a bit annoyed by hijacks, but I am very curious as to just how this will be applied.
The application of any corrective measures should be used judiciously. Like a friend of mine says, it only takes a few people to fuck it up for everybody. One of the times he said it was talking about DUI laws. Because some people got rip roaring drunk, drove around like an idiot and hurt people, now I can't even stop at the bar on the way home from work for fear of getting a DUI. This is the typical government knee jerk reaction. The law has gotten to the point that everybody is guilty. If a cop asks you to do a field sobriety test you are getting a DUI. Just refuse it and do not let them have that tape of you. If they ask, you are busted. You might as well just say "Hell I can't even do that sober". I am serious.
Now was the previous paragraph
-A hijack
-A related comment
-A pertinent though tertiary point
Don't get me wrong, I am against drunk driving, but in this country we have bars. You drink at bars. You must go home. If a gang of folks go to the bar, the soberest person should drive home, or the one who can hold their liquor the best. We don't want problems, but the law has gotten to the point that sometimes it is cheaper to have the car towed home and call a cab even after one beer.
So now I am getting back to the base point, so what does the preceding constitute ?
I am learning the finer points of the rules here. Certain words are unnacceptable no matter how they're used, and "Hows about if I get my......." can be construed as a threat. Understood.
I hope everyone here understands, like I do, that this forum is searchable to a search engune and is totally public. While only members can post, anyone in the world can read. As such there emerges an image factor. We are kinksters and already carry just a bit of stigma with some factions of the public. The management does not want us to appear to be knuckle dragging freakazoids who rape babies and smear shit all over the place. They want us to appear as the productive intelligent Citizens that we are.
But like anywhere rules are made to be broken, and they have and it has slid. I remember reading "No mention of illegal activity", well that rule is certainly moderated. It has to be. If I posted about when I got robbed and shot (I am an Urban, you pretty much can't rob me without shooting me) that would not violate TOS. Pot is mentioned here and ther and is illegal in many places, but it is legal or at least decriminalized in some places.
So much for that right now. Since I have your attention, I think a good thing would be to eliminate the quote function. This might be a nice fell swoop. I see threads get into as many pages as this and foing through you see box after box of quote. Goddammit I already read that ! STOP ! Make the people mark the text, use Ctrl+C and the CTRL+V. Put in their own quotation marks. Then maybe we will see less of a thousand line quote with a respondent who writes one fucking line.
Geez, you quote the post that is right there precedent to yours, it is right there. When it appears you are right after it.
And these monster quoters with the one liners are killing this forum. What to do about it ? Can't tellya. I would have to think on that a bit. We are dealing with people here and that is always in a state of flux of course.
There is one possibility, somehow Google has it, in their management of Usenet newsgroups, sometimes it says "show quoted text". If the quote function would actually just do that instead of actually displaying it we might get somewhere.
Hijacking is one thing, but 100 replies that each quote everything and add one line does not hijack. It runs it straight into the ground. Let me ask all of you, who the fuck wants to read the same thing 100 fucking times ?
Suffice it to say that there is no perfect solution. Good luck.
