ottRopesandKnots -> RE: Thread Hijacking (2/3/2008 9:34:39 AM)

See, now here's a great example of a thread starting to get filled up with incessant off topic noise and chatter.

Everyone gets busy firing little one liners at each other, singing songs, and arranging bake sales and the ratio of topic relevant posts to crap drops to the point of uselessness.  While some may feel the thread has wound its course and is done, I feel the need to point out that the thread is only 2 days old.  I missed a day of posting and suddenly the relevant discussion in the thread has almost disappeared and is drowned out by crud.

It isn't that some of the individual off topic posts aren't amusing and entertaining, just that their VOLUME starts to make the thread unworkable.  Yes, I understand that you've all had your fill of the thread and you feel it is time to move on to playful antics, but perhaps others of us would like to continue discussion and find our ability hampered by the noise.

Termyn8or -> RE: Thread Hijacking (2/3/2008 9:36:34 AM)

C'mon Mod11, I think they're just doing it to be cool. To hijack a thread about hijacking threads. I think I kinda asked for it, I mean a place like this and all. What did I think was going to happen ?

Nice to see you here. My main question still begs an answer, how do you determine what is a malicious hijack rather than a tertiary remark ? Even n "aside" or a sidebar so to speak ? Is that not to be allowed ? I think that would be too confining.

So we are talking a great deal of discretion here and a judgement call on almost every post. I wonder if you might find that you have bitten off more than you can chew.

As much as it might bite me in the ass once in a while, I do appreciate your efforts here, you keep this forum from slipping down into a morass of petty bullshit as seen on some blogs. I will not express a positive or negative view of this new standard for posting, because sometimes I get a bit annoyed by hijacks, but I am very curious as to just how this will be applied.

The application of any corrective measures should be used judiciously. Like a friend of mine says, it only takes a few people to fuck it up for everybody. One of the times he said it was talking about DUI laws. Because some people got rip roaring drunk, drove around like an idiot and hurt people, now I can't even stop at the bar on the way home from work for fear of getting a DUI. This is the typical government knee jerk reaction. The law has gotten to the point that everybody is guilty. If a cop asks you to do a field sobriety test you are getting a DUI. Just refuse it and do not let them have that tape of you. If they ask, you are busted. You might as well just say "Hell I can't even do that sober". I am serious.

Now was the previous paragraph
-A hijack
-A related comment
-A pertinent though tertiary point

Don't get me wrong, I am against drunk driving, but in this country we have bars. You drink at bars. You must go home. If a gang of folks go to the bar, the soberest person should drive home, or the one who can hold their liquor the best. We don't want problems, but the law has gotten to the point that sometimes it is cheaper to have the car towed home and call a cab even after one beer.

So now I am getting back to the base point, so what does the preceding constitute ?

I am learning the finer points of the rules here. Certain words are unnacceptable no matter how they're used, and "Hows about if I get my......." can be construed as a threat. Understood.

I hope everyone here understands, like I do, that this forum is searchable to a search engune and is totally public. While only members can post, anyone in the world can read. As such there emerges an image factor. We are kinksters and already carry just a bit of stigma with some factions of the public. The management does not want us to appear to be knuckle dragging freakazoids who rape babies and smear shit all over the place. They want us to appear as the productive intelligent Citizens that we are.

But like anywhere rules are made to be broken, and they have and it has slid. I remember reading "No mention of illegal activity", well that rule is certainly moderated. It has to be. If I posted about when I got robbed and shot (I am an Urban, you pretty much can't rob me without shooting me) that would not violate TOS. Pot is mentioned here and ther and is illegal in many places, but it is legal or at least decriminalized in some places.

So much for that right now. Since I have your attention, I think a good thing would be to eliminate the quote function. This might be a nice fell swoop. I see threads get into as many pages as this and foing through you see box after box of quote. Goddammit I already read that ! STOP ! Make the people mark the text, use Ctrl+C and the CTRL+V. Put in their own quotation marks. Then maybe we will see less of a thousand line quote with a respondent who writes one fucking line.

Geez, you quote the post that is right there precedent to yours, it is right there. When it appears you are right after it.

And these monster quoters with the one liners are killing this forum. What to do about it ? Can't tellya. I would have to think on that a bit. We are dealing with people here and that is always in a state of flux of course.

There is one possibility, somehow Google has it, in their management of Usenet newsgroups, sometimes it says "show quoted text". If the quote function would actually just do that instead of actually displaying it we might get somewhere.

Hijacking is one thing, but 100 replies that each quote everything and add one line does not hijack. It runs it straight into the ground. Let me ask all of you, who the fuck wants to read the same thing 100 fucking times ?

Suffice it to say that there is no perfect solution. Good luck.

You just responded clearly, how did the "noise "inhibit you?.  are we to pander to the lowest common denominator? Should we all gear or responses to the least intellegent? Or should a topic, find it's own level?

no offense but this was an exceptionally heated debate for about a day and a half. there's something like 17 pages of comments on the f-er. i understand your reasoning but at the same time threads are destined to die. it happens. so post a direct question and someone will respond. like i am.  or start an offshoot thread. it happens all the time.

kittinSol -> RE: Thread Hijacking (2/3/2008 9:43:40 AM)

I think you're being unfair. I mostly staid on topic - give or take the occasional off tangent babble. You're correct however that the thread has acquired monstrous proportions as a result of its organic growth. Got any weed killer?

 Golly I guess I have to post here now that I've been told that I am one of the 'nasty mean followers'.[8|] Ironic because I've always been one to say please play nicely.

or does that make me a leader? damn it i don't have time to be a leader!!!

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Thread Hijacking (2/3/2008 9:58:47 AM)

I’m thinking back to bob and how it didn’t really matter what he wrote because no one would read it anyway, people would just turn up, I included, and attack him based on other posts he had made previously. It was hardly fair and I think that is the kind of thing this rule now tries to cover, it may fail but the alternative is new people not being given a chance and not feeling welcome. This does more often than not relate to new people versus an established group of friends. New blood is good we all get tired of the same old people with the same old opinions floating about.

Having said that I'll probably ignore everything I just wrote myself and fall into the same old habits. We must change though because when people leave this site feeling disgruntled by how they were treated here by others they spread the wrong impression of this community to those who have never been a part of it and so never will. Of coarse the people here know what this site is all about and so feel no need to defend it to others externally, so that doesn't do anything to rebalance the image created by those leaving with their bad experiences.

Shut up me.[:D]

domahpet -> RE: Thread Hijacking (2/3/2008 10:09:49 AM)

currently, on another thread, a 19yr old pregnant girl is being shredded by the very same one that started all this bs.

three pages and it hasnt been pulled yet, and it dosent seem that the shredder is being moderated.

now im more confused then ever, how can i try to moderate myself  (properly) with this for an example?

Certainly my ability to post wasn't impeded, but my ability to read through the thread and comment on other people's postings was and most semblance of an on topic discussion has been drowned out.

No offense taken, I don't actually offend easily.

Yes, there are 17 some odd pages (18 now) of comments in the thread, but how many of those pages are off topic noise?  I have no problem with threads dying, but a naturally dying thread is one in which people just stop posting, not where it gets filled with crap and becomes strangled to death and/or killed (which I believe is part of the point of the moderator's posting in Announcements).  A day and a half might seem like a natural thread life for the people who log in every hour because they have nothing else keeping them busy in their lives, but it seems awful short to me and the death seems more imposed than natural.

You are correct, "it happens all the time".  Sadly true, and usually by the same group of people.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Thread Hijacking (2/3/2008 10:32:47 AM)

That's a bit melodramatic[:D].

I too feel for these poor murdered threads you speak of, a thread should be treated with respect and brought back for future generations to learn what biscuits we all liked.

I think everybody is overreading into this.  But it seems to be time to keep the clam chowder recipies in the recipe thread and not in the what grease does mistress use on her dildo thread.  I would not look to invite the wrath of Khan upon myself for the next few weeks.

You pretty much know if you been naughty or nice, and if done with a good heart, you may be home free, but everyone takes the risk of having the boom lowered regardless of intentions.

Ron

Hey Ron,

Your posts have been quite enlightening and enjoyable as always. i think you are right on target here with the above. i did not get the impression the Mods were talking about "thread evolution" which often occurs and with excellent discussion as much as they were talking about the intentional and vicious derailing.

i know i have been guilty of being off topic in some of my responses to a thread but never an intential derailing. However even that has earned me a warning from Mod 11. The way i see it, i am playing in someone else's backyard. They are providing me with a source of entertainment...i can play by the rules.

Anyway, you dear Ron, have said what needed saying better than anyone and i am in full agreement~

Having been corrected twice for making this statement which implied that I believed people were more mature than that.  I will now retract it and state this instead.  I personally have no "side" and find the mentality to be ridiculous.  Any statement I ever make on this board is my own and not influenced by any clique.  I'm very happy to see that the side-takers are distancing themselves from me as I want nothing to do with it.

In a "politically correct" world, yes, we are all too sensitive to accept sarcasm.  Please refrain from using any terminology that can in any way be viewed as hurtful, harmful,  sarcastic, witty, facetious, or whimsical.*  It will not be tolerated!
