I'm finally recovering from a damn flu.  The worst symptom, in my opinion, would have to be the overwhelming, dehabilitating exhaustion.  It effects me in many ways, all the way from difficultly moving to difficulty thinking; movements I would consider as effortless are taxing, and things I would typically consider trivial feel like mental aerobatics.

"This is all the sickness; I'll be better when it passes," I reasoned to myself as I swaggered along the sidewalk to class.  I mostly felt determination, but also a good bit of self-pity.  I then felt shamed the latter as I observed an old man on a cane walking by at a pace even slower than mine.  So then I just started thinking about it.

With age, isn't it the mitochondria that lose effectiveness and die, yielding the loss of strength?  That can't feel too differently from what I'm going through.  The tiredness people speak of with age, their slower pace, difficulty lifting heavier objects..

..is this what I have to look forward to in old age?  Will the exhaustion be similar?

Even I'll be old someday.  In a way, I'll have to live another time span equal to everything I've ever experienced before I even really begin to get there.  In another, one day, I'll be there; it'll have all seemed as though it were in the blink of an eye.

Better to know what's coming, right?

My ex-father-in-law (a World War II Veteran ) jogged for miles and miles every day, well into his nineties. He worked on his rentals, he drove his Ford every day, his mind was sharp, and he remained extremely healthy and active like that until just last year when he fell ill at the age of almost 100.

He never drank or smoked, and he never chased women except the one he was married to, so I would say in answer to your question, not necessarily. A lot depends on you.

Actually, no. It's not better to know what's coming. Better to prepare to meet WHATEVER is coming in the best shape you can be in. Some people are fit, active, and healthy into their 70's (I have a friend who is a virtual Energizer Bunny at 71). Some are afflicted with various injuries and diseases in their earlier years. If the latter happens to you, you will be better able to handle it if you're fit and healthy to begin with.

It is good to see what others go through and empathize with them, though, so you can treat them with compassion. Because if that should happen to you, you sure as heck are gonna want a boat-load of compassion coming your way.

Besides, I'll always want to stick around to see the next great invention

Well I am 59.   I used to run 6 miles a day. was physically fit   I could even sshove 1200 pounds around the floor without much problem(no it wasn't on wheels either).   Then I got diabetie, and found out I have chronic bronchitis since I was a kid.  My kidneys aren't doing as well as they should be.   I am sick right now and have to stop and take a break when I walk across the house to chatch my breathe.   I had to retire at 55 cause I couldn't breathe.

But you know what.   I am not old.   Old is a state of mind.   The physical body is sometimes beyond the control of the mind.   What really pisses me off, is when some of those that are younger equate overweight (I am) with lazyness.   They take no consideration of medical issues like thyroid problems (not me) or can't do things like they can.   Keep that in mind as you go thru life.   It isn't all diet and exercise.

You are learning your lesson now.   I hope you remember it when the guy with the cane goes by again and you give him a hand doing whatever he needs.

No, old people dont feel that way, that is the typical feeling when you are intoxicated, in your case by the virus action producing a  reaction of high oxidation in your tissues and blood. All your body energies are into fighting against it, so litle reamains for the usual things of your day, even your apetite is low, because there is no a prioritie in feed but in eliminate...detox. How?
Taking a lot of liquids (fresh juices) and antioxidants, the best among them, the vitamin c. Take one gram every hour, till you feel better or feel a litle movment in your bowels (or gas) that is the signal you have arrised the saturation of vitamin c in your body. No harm at all for this.
good luck!!

No it is not all we have to look forward to but we have to stay active mentally, physically, emotionally and maintain an active role in our healthcare.

I can tell you at My age, I can run rings around most people younger with My energy and activities, I often wear out My UM---its all how you arrive--and how you want to exit.

And the reason that the body acts thay way when you are sick, is to make you rest--ahem.
