Sanity -> Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:01:21 PM)

I've heard a lot of people mention Republican names in the context of their being too religious to vote for... but what about Obama. He said the following in Boise today:

quote:

Obama stopped in Idaho, where caucuses offer a mere 18 delegates on Tuesday, and he worked to reassure Westerners on two fronts.
"I've been going to the same church for more than 20 years, praising Jesus," he told an audience in Boise, warning his listeners not to believe e-mails that falsely say he is a Muslim.

Praising Jesus for 20 years... so now, are all the Christian-hating Bush bashers going to begin spitting on Barack? Or is that different, since Barack is a Democrat.

Hard to say.  My distaste for one's beliefs typically depend on how much they actually believe in it.. how much it affects them.

I typically like this guy, but I still have research to do on views before election day.  It's his non-aggressiveness and lack of ties to the normal dirty aspects of politics (so far as I can tell) that I like about 'em.

Of course, I may still have to vote against him if his actual views aren't something I find as agreeable as his demeanor.

There is a world of difference between religion and religiosity

He's a politician campaigning for the office of the presidency in a state with a high concentration of fundamentalist Christians (Mormons, to name one sect).  So, of course he's going to play the Jesus card.

DomKen -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:17:04 PM)

Nevber once have I heard him say Jesus or god or any other mythical entity spoke to him and told him what course of action to pursue. That includes the many times I talked to him at events in Hyde Park sinc he first got elected my state senator back in 1996. That of course is not the case for Bush and the othe rreligious whack jobs the GOP has trotted out over the last decade. Bush said god told him to invade Iraq. Rovertson routinely comes out with his prophecies for the coming year based on what god has told him.

Sanity you're not very good at mudslinging. It may be because you're just parroting what you here from Hannity or Limbaugh or it may be that you simply aren't very good at it. In either case I suggest trying another hobby.

Sanity -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:17:04 PM)

I have to disagree - he's looking for delegates among the party faithful (so to speak) at this point, in the general election he'll never carry Idaho. So among Democrats there is no reason for him to pander for religious votes really.

So even though he just praised Jebus in front of God and everybody, you don't believe he really means hethat he believes. Is that about right?

You think he's lying here?

Or is it okay, since he's an avowed Liberal. They can praise Jesus all day long, and that's okay with you...

DomKen -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:26:02 PM)

No, did I say anywhere in that post that he was lying? Read it carefully or maybe find someone to read and explain it to you. I have no problem with someone being religious. I know very few people who do. I have a problem with people who claim to personally have the ear of god or who claim god speaks to them or similiar BS.

You're still not doing a very good job though. To twist my words you shouldn't have actually quoted them. Then a lazy reader might have read your post without going back to mine to compare what I wrote to what you claimed I wrote. I really don't think you have the knack for mudslinging. I really do think you would be better served with some other hobby.

Sanity -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:29:19 PM)

I'm not mudslinging, I'm trying to pick your brain. I'm trying to pin you down on this, see where you really stand. Anyone who's truly religious, as Barack claimed today that he is, thinks they have the ear of god, or that god talks to them. Else they're lying about their faith. Don't you think?

DesFIP -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:30:25 PM)

The difference here is that he doesn't bring up his religious convictions all the time. It was relevant since people were attempting to smear him as being a terrorist because he is Muslim. So he addressed the smear directly.

Sanity -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:34:43 PM)

So what makes it okay for Liberals to thump Bibles is that they only do it occasionally, in order to prove that they're not terrorists. That makes sense... I get it now. Thanks for clearing that up!

So, it is okay for Barack - but for Bush, it's horrible.

Does he claim to have spoken with god ,like the POTUS has?

depends on your definition of nut.

Sanity -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:39:25 PM)

He claims he's been praising Jesus for twenty years, so that really sounds like Obama thinks that Jesus is real, alive, can hear him, give him signs, guide him, and so on.

That or BO is a liar...

Is Idaho a split electorate state?  No matter, he needs the primary votes.  Gotta have good numbers even if you can't drag it into the egg basket.

I guess that's ultimately what I'm getting at. How can  Huckabee or Romney possibly be "religious nuts" if Obama isn't, especially after the speech Barack Obama gave in Boise today?

mnottertail -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:49:35 PM)

Have they been accused somewhere as religious nuts?  Lets have a cite or two on that.

I am not sure I will buy into the premise of your last post, Sanity.

i guess personally someone saying they go to church regularly doesn't make them a nut. but then i'm pagan so none of their views on religion are going to be particularly relevant to me right now anyway, unless it has to do with limiting my rights to pratice.

Sanity -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:52:42 PM)

Do you need those cites on tiger hide, and written in virgin blood, Ron?  Or what exactly would be acceptable proof to you that Republicans are oft referred to as "religious nuts".

Phin -> RE: Obama Too Much Of A Religious Nut? (2/2/2008 2:54:49 PM)

I dont see that comment as "bible thumping"

as I see it bible thumping is every speach, every time someone speeks, they bring up religion. Mentioning it for the first time in his campaign that has lasted months, not a big deal. Bush tries to shove god and sonny jesus down our throats. and dont get me started on huckabee... that man SCARES me.
