ok really stupid question---we live in an area where there is a drought---and so mandatory water conservation is in effect --50 gallons per person per day ( go figure your daily usage)--so we have bricks in our already water saving toilets--here is the deal---not enough water to flush the heavy stuff and the need for plungers--oy *what do you do to keep your plunger, uhm sanitary as it sits there--use to use?*

umm- I once lived with no plumbing. Using grocery bags- one can double bag the crap. even today- i walk out and put meat grease down the street drain. oh that dry hand wash is decent. shower water can be ued to water plants. put out extremely grubby chothes b4 rain for prewash.

Spent 14 years in the sewer plant. LOL Yeah is a shitty job but someone had to do it. Anyway Sodium Hypochloride (bleach) is what we used for ordor control. It also is a good disinfectant usually 15 minutes contact time will kill just about anyting. I personally would go down and get industrail strength (12%) bleach but household will work.

oh regarding compost- meat will draw rats. human waste is a no no for compost.

when we lost our septic a few years ago i think we just bleached it down periodically and got a new one when the rubber started breakign down. you can try wiping it off with those wet wipe things just to keep it from getting well goopy for lack of a better word.

If you have Class A sludge, then it makes great potting soil. Just go down to the store and start reading the ingredients. If it says biowaste or sludge or something like that it is human waste solids. Yes they have been disenfected. But make great compost when mixed with green waste. It is the flies that will drive you crazy.

If its yellow, let it mellow. If its brown, flush it down. Keep waste water from washing, bathing etc for flushing. Lift the valve in the loo cistern to stop it filling up automatically and using drinking water from your allowance. Flush using your waste water. Human waste can be used for composting - but it cant be too pleasant I'd have thought. They do it at the Centre For Alternative Technology at Machynlleth in Wales. E

they use horse poo and cow poo back home as long as there is decent drainage...you might want to check and see your local regs though they might have something in there about biohazards and possible containmenation.

I just jam mine into the cupboard under the sink. Yes, I am classy:) (And also bitter that my guaranteed flush toilet is not so well, guaranteed).

Maybe a bucket with bleach water in it? Use that as the container for the plunger between plunges.However I do not know if bleach will degrade the material a plunger is made from.. ETA, I have two toilets from 1972 which means they are the heavy water usage ones. Never a need for more than one flush. Now that I'm selling my house (anyone interested??) I have to replace them because they are discolored from seriously hard water and I've decided to take them with me! Who cares if they are a pinky beige porcelen? (sp)I hate those water saver toilets, seems that everyone complains about having to flush-flush-flush every time.

Actually 50 Gallons of water per day per person is quite a bit of water. I just looked at my water bill and I am single and use way less than that, although that is the minimum amount I am billed for each month. Since I live in the desert, a lot of people have replumbed their homes so that they have sumps that their grey water (washing machine, sinks, etc) go to. Then they use it for watering their landscapes. It also can be diverted to your toilet as well.

It also can be diverted to your toilet as well. there's a thought--try collecting grey water. we use rain water sometimes at home but if you're in a drought zone that's probably not an option. but if you're just washing your teeth or something you can try to catch it. it's not going to be gallons a day but it's some to help you flush.

Im sure I use alot of water... cold water- I clear the tap. Also piping goes 110 feet to the faucet.

I've no idea how much water I use, but it is probably quite a bit. I'm on a private well that goes 175 feet deep. The water is terribly hard and mineralized but all I pay for is the electricity to run the sump pump and the water softner (which I don't think is working, but I don't know how to fix it) It would be interesting to see how much I do use.

Camille you could put a flow meter inline to find out. Not sure how much they cost. My sister and I went camping and survived a week on 30 gallons of water. Had plenty to drink, cook and do dishes with and we each took daily showers (I have a solar shower).

Thanks Ken, I might look into that. I didn't realise there was a thingie you could put on it to gauge the usage.. but it makes sense that there is. Speaking of flushing issues:http://glumbert.com/media/surelock This made me cringe and giggle all at the same time. [:D]
