there's no real alternative to riding cars and heating homes. Will biodiesel people have any better a conscience? M

If you want to save money on your hot water, of course you can start using less, but you can also use solar panels (around 5 square meters, depends on how much you use) that will save about half the energy. But the very first thing you should do is check the setting of your heater : Is the combustion complete, and how hot does it heat the water ? : no need to have water over 50°C, although it's very often set on 60°C. In France you get a tax reduction when you buy solar panels, so in a sense the government has started to take some "environment-friendly" measures, although of course the point is to reduce our energetic dependency. Same with double glazing, for example.

Concerning the car, some have reached 50 or 60 miles per gallon when many cars only make 25 or 30 miles per gallon. And 60 miles per gallon is a first step : http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/08/15/hybrid.tinkerers.ap/ .
Some people decided to do something to save money on their car spendings http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/24/pf/gas_gripes/.

Ideas to protest high gasoline prices

1) Hold breath until one turns blue
2) Repeal the law of gravity
3) Join the Flat Earth Society
4) Interview the Loch Ness Monster
5) Boycott all petroleum based products - oil, plastics, polymers
6) Email all your friends to boycott Wal-Mart, their municipal water
supply, and the local police.
7) Write your congressman to name Tyronosaurus Rex as an endangered
species.
8) Write the mayor of New York that we should return the Statue of
Liberty to the French.

9) Go biodiesel. Man that is just not catching on, now is it?

I did , I like the idea.
Am just wondering what would make biodiesel more affordable? If profit is the order of the day, is biodiesel going to be cheaper in the long run? Obviously, I'm all for it if it is overall better for the environment. M

Maybe sometime when you're in the neighborhood, you can show me what a solar panel looks like for one, and check if the combustion is complete on my water heater Frenchpet. M

no i don't think boycotting gasoline for one day will work all they will do is keep raising the price to make up for the loss.
it is legal to make your own sprits at home as long as you don't sell. i don't understand why people are not doing like they done in the 20s and 30s but this time making shine for fuel. that would be a big boycott it most of us made our own gas.

Actually something that some people do is getting their fuel for free : they just take used oil from fast-food restaurants, filter it and use it in their diesel engine. I know a website in french explaining how to filter the oil properly, and how to modify your engine so that you can use 100% oil (instead of a mix including 30% oil only), but I guess a little googling should bring the same information in english. You might want to use only a 30% mix (which will reduce the bill significantly !) if you dont know anything about mechanics or if the place where you live is too cold (especially in winter). You may want to check if it's legal to do that where you live (I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be legal but).
And then you're OK to have a deal with the local fast food restaurant (the manager will be happy to get rid of his oil for free !). The engine will be even cleaner... the smell will be kind of funny though.

Well, we have cut down a great deal in the last year.  My First servitor commuted to work daily. Now she works at home. That saves 70 miles a week. Next we will work on figuring out how to walk to and from the grocery store. Only problem is, the way home is up a very steep hill. Going to the store would be OK< but lugging home gorceries....  Shoving a fully loaded cart 3 miles, the last half mile uphill isn't going to be easy!

Still, if we figure out how to do that, we can cut automotive gas consumption to near zero! But then there are, as an earlier poster commented, more ways we use fuel and absorb fuel costs.  The price of *everything* is going to go up! Food, clothing, anything that is carried on trucks, planes, ships...

Another thing we as consumers could/should do is write our representative's in Washington and our states and ask for a repeal of the gas taxes (horrors!).  Personally, with the money i would SAVE i would SPEND it in my local economy, which in the long run yields more tax revenue.  What a concept!

Get those fingers tapping!
