Trouble is you are asking a question as large and varied in individual answer as every family that lived in the '50s.
I could say; that we sat down at 6pm on the dot for supper and you better be there or it is your ass.
I can say my father was in charge, and my mother DEFERRED to his wishes.
I can say that children were to be seen and not heard.
I can say women were homemakers, only the rare one had a job.... and usually had each other over for coffee, cake, bridge and swapped beauty secrets, and quilted, and crafted....and so on
We didn't know about cholesterol and wouldnt have give a fiddlers fuck about it if we did. We ate simple fare, but ate like kings!!!!
I can say that in middle america, you didnt have divorce, nor did you have gangs.
I can say that were I to be down the basement at the workbench, making a pipe bomb, at some point in the black and white news with huntley/brinkley or the rattling of the newspaper, he would have yelled from his easy chair, what you doing son?
I would have said, building a pipe bomb to blow up school, dad.
He would say, come up here when you get done with that.
I would have and he would have beat the shit out of me with it, and said that he would have to kill me because I obviously wasn't right in the fucking head and had no social graces.

the good old days weren't always good;
and tomorrow's not as bright as it seems.
