Channel 4 news (UK) just reported this - first I'd heard of it. Rebels believed to be backed by Sudan have pulled back from the capital of Chad which they entered earlier this week - ostensibly to allow civilians to leave before they make a final assault. Refugees from the Darfur conflict flooded into Chad, now they and the people of Chad are fleeing into Cameroon. Its thought that the assault on the capital has been ordered by Sudan to prevent the deployment of European peace keeping forces within Chad but aimed at Darfur, just over the border in Sudan. There are 1400 French soldiers in the capital, equipped with armoured cars and the like. The French president today broke with convention to advise the aggressors that unlike in previous similar situations, (we all recall I'm sure the frustrations of Bosnia), the French troops would intervene to help Chad to repel the attack. We'll see what happens. What's interesting is this sudden change of policy by this new French president, especially since his visit to his new best friend, one George Bush. It might just also go some way to explaining why France hasnt been too well represented in other theatres perhaps - they were anticipating this one. E
