If obama wins, taking clinton on as vice president would be commiting political suicide.  Republicans and independents HATE that woman with a passion (including me, I'd vote for Huckabee before I voted for her).  He'd be better off taking edwards or finding someone else.

...I've always wanted to make a post like that, but I just can't do it without putting some sense into it. :-p

Oh, and I love the sound of it.  I'm going to be more realistic and get accustomed to the sound of "Vice President Huckabee"

You want a man so disconnected from reality that he believes in a literal 6 day creation a few thousand years ago anywhere near the reins of power? Haven't the last 7 years been bad enough?

Shawn1066 -> RE: Obama and Clinton making history (2/5/2008 10:18:00 PM)

Actually, Huckabee has said he doesn't know if God created the world in six days.  Which is a true statement.  He doesn't know.  Nobody does know what happened, scientfically or spiritually, beyond a shadow of a doubt.  He has faith that his God created the world in six days, but he doesn't know if that's literal or not.  He believes the only thing that's really important is that God created the world, in his view...

He's also said that whether he believes in evolution or not doesn't really have any bearing on how he'd be president.  This is also true.  It doesn't one bit.

I don't see anything wrong with this.  I admire his religious convictions, and he's perfectly allowed to have them and still be president.

Huckabee is a creationist.  He is not opposed to the teaching of evolution or similar theories.  He merely believes alternative theories should be taught as well.  In theory, I've always maintained that's not such a bad idea.

I think we live in a sad world where people are supposed to be shunned from office because of their religous beliefs.

Well, Hillary took Calif. so it looks as though she is unstopable now.
She gave a good speech earlier about how we need to start rebuilding the infra-structure in this country as well as clean up after Katrina. I agree!

CuriousLord -> RE: Obama and Clinton making history (2/5/2008 10:51:15 PM)

The irony here is that people think it's progressive to vote for someone based on their gender or race as long as it's not a tradiational form of racism/sexism.

It's like highschool, when all the teens are lining up to be nonconformists, but they end up conforming to their adolscent notions nonconformity.  Only, in this case, it's grown adults under the impression that reverse prejustices are progressive.

This is going to be like religion.  I'm going to be pissed at people for being stupid until I get over it and learn just to manipulate it to my advantage.  I somehow always knew I was going to end up in politics.

LOL, CL, Boy, I'm glad I'm not "progressive!"
I don't even know what "progressive" is!
I mean I've heard the term before but I just never bothered to learn what it was.
Don't they make a soup?

Yes, he said that but he also said:
"I think schools also ought to be fair to all views. Because, frankly, Darwinism is not an established scientific fact. It is a theory of evolution, that’s why it’s called the theory of evolution. And I think that what I’d be concerned with is that it should be taught as one of the views that’s held by people. But it’s not the only view that’s held. And any time you teach one thing as that it’s the only thing, then I think that has a real problem to it."
http://www.ncseweb.org/resources/rncse_content/vol25/8118_is_evolution_arkansas39s_h_12_30_1899.asp
Which is at best ignorant and at worst a knowing lie.

There is no scientific evidence for any form of creationism and everything brought forward by its proponents is either an outright hoax or intentionally misinterpreted. Anyone who carries water for liars of this sort has no business holding any public office but I'll settle for keeping him out of the white house. As to how would it affect his doing his job, The POTUS is a major driving force behind what sorts of research programs receive federal funds. We've basically lost the stem cell race and if some fool is in the white house who can't understand or care about the next emergent new industry we're all in for a very bleak future. Also the POTUS appoints federal judges which is the first line of defence against religious extremists inserting psuedoscience and religion into classrooms. The next Kitzmiller v Dover must not be heard by a federal judiciary filled with sympathetic ears.

As to whether or not we can know scientifically when the earth was created and how long it took, you're quite mistaken. Science deals in observations, facts, and theories, frameworks that explain facts. We have multi billion year old rocks formed initially by sedimentation, we know this, we have the rocks and can measure their age by a multitude of different tests. Therefore this line of evidence indicates the Earth is much older than 6000 years. There are many many other observations that show the age of the Earth. The exact age is unknown and our best theory is of course subject to further refinement but 6000 years is conclusively ruled out. We know that different species of organisms used to inhabit the Earth. We have found their remains. We have observed the gradual changes that occured over time to change those ancient organisms into those alive today. That is a fact, the fact of evolution. The theory of evolution is the explanatory framework we have developed to explain the observed facts. That theory is of course subject to refinement and change however it is conclusively ruled out that all living types of organisms were poofed into existence 6000 years ago. Those major advances in biochemistry that folks like GWB and Huckabee don't want to hear about have shown that all life on this planet shares a common basic chemistry but with clear signs of a random iterative process of change. That is a fact, it is utterly inescapable. We explain it with the theory of common descent which is of course as all science subject to further refinement but the sudden poofing into existence of all life on earth with no underlying relationship is only a possible competing theory by the most ludicrous of "God is testing your faith" BS.

The biological sciences are poised to be the new industry of the first half of this century. We already benefit greatly from the early advances of this biological revolution and the possibilities are virtually limitless unless we are turned into a backward nation because our elected leaders think teaching genesis in biology class is a good idea.

I don't favor shunning anyone based on any belief. I do however look closely at any candidate for POTUS and one that believes that all of modern biology is incorrect based solely on religious belief is someone I think has no place in office.

double post

cyberdude611 -> RE: Obama and Clinton making history (2/6/2008 1:24:53 AM)

It doesnt matter. Either one will be out in 4 years.

This country is very divided on many fronts in both parties. Both are also weak leaders if you ask me. This is probably the weakest field on both the GOP and the Democrats side in modern American history.

Hillary is hated by an awful lot of people. And Obama is the best person I've seen that can talk and talk and talk for hours about absolutely nothing at all. His speeches have a lot of nice warm words but zero substance. It's amazing how many sheep are falling right in line to that crap.

And McCain? Dont even get me started on that fraud.

Yes it is truly amazing i wish both of these candidates luck, but im keeping my fingers crossed for Obama,as America needs change. As he's the man to impose that change, also it's about time America had a black president.

liketophoto -> RE: Obama and Clinton making history (2/6/2008 2:10:43 AM)

Change is fine, so many see things are bad . War, econime, Healthcare, Morgage crisis, etc. etc.. but complete change looses so much experience and the new person so soon gets lost in the qwagmire. There is something to say for experience also.

No one is realling saying this yet (other than the cigar thing) but, maybe it's time to start thinking of these two as Prez. and Vice Prez..

Contrast the clear statement of intent from Huckabee with the wishy washy things Obama says.
I want to make the world a safer place.

Yeah that must be why he said this before he ran for POTUS:
"I think that the state ought to give students exposure to all points of view. And I would hope that that would be all points of view and not only evolution. I think that they also should be given exposure to the theories not only of evolution but to the basis of those who believe in creationism ."

A Black man and a woman running for President of the United States, and one of them
may actually become President of the United States.
I know this is not the first time this has happened, but it IS the first time either
one of them had a real chance of winning.

Putting politics aside {lol}, did you EVER think you would live to see this day?

Do you see the winner between Obama and Clinton, picking the other for Vice President?
President Clinton, Vice President Obama

OR
President Obama, Vice President Clinton

perhaps the only thing that could get better is if he was a cross-dresser and she were a lesbian.

Oh, hell no, no way would they combine forces. She wins and she would have to give him a hell of alot more than a rocking chair. He can run again without compromise later.

He wins,  she might get chair of DNC.  Them folks aren't that forgiving.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Obama and Clinton making history (2/6/2008 10:01:30 AM)

DomKen:Exactly.
You said he was going to interfere in the biology curriculum.
He says only that he wants alternative viewpoints taught.

Creationism can be taught in a rigorous intellectual way and it should help to open minds to subtle truths about the human condition which Natural Selectioners, with their belief in a circular pseudo science, simply cant grasp.
Evolution at work: billions up billions of bacteria generations, they get better at spreading Clostridium Difficile. a life threatening intestinal infection. but stubbornly remain bacteria. lol

Back to the thread, I saw an Obama video responding to the State of the Union address where I must admit he was quite specific, about tax for example. Thought I would throw that in after my comment about him above.

Actually, I'm just hoping goes for status quo and ineffectual myself.  He's the least of of all the evils;  I doubt seriosuly he'll do any good, but I don't think he'll do much harm either.

Ironically, enough, after doing some serous searching on my non-mainstream news sources, he's actually drawing something of a blank in that regard, which I find suprising to say the least.  I can find dirt on almost any other candidate out there and a host of things that they have said which draws a big fat "No way in hell" from me.

Obama, though, de nada.  Even considering AIPAC influence in politics, hes been toeing thier line but not so much as putting a pinky toe over it.  Several of his pasts speechs and comments in regards to the Israel/Palestinian he either A) doesn't really give a damn about either of the sides (which works for me, even that much might force those two sides to actually deal with each other) or B) Might actually work to resolve this in a fair way and is carefully saying the correct things in order to get to the point he he can actually do something.

And thats it.  Even his gun control voting record has been acceptable to me, which is really strange. My only real miff has been his voting record on appropriations for the Iraq War, hes voted for all the appropriations for is so far.

If your curios what hes been doing as a Senator take a look at these two links.

http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=9490 List of all major bills in the 2005-2006 congress and his voting record.

If your curios as to all the other candidates, those same sites work for most all of them
