Like I've said before, when I go out for a walk or bike riding or to the gym I rarely see fat people walking, biking or gyming.

Popeye, i wonder if it's ever occured to You that people are not doing these things in front of You because You are, in fact, a judgmental jackass....i mean seriously, i understand these are Your beliefs and nothing i say or do is going to change them, but it might just be time to get a clue...

When I go to the Chinese all you can eat buffet I always see fat people.
Maybe they go down to the beach and jog it off unbeknownst to me.
One thing though, should you really be at an all you can eat buffet if you're overweight by that much?

No....No...You are right, we shouldn't....In fact, i appoint You the all holy great grand puba of measurements to determine who is and is not appropriate to do what.....

Obesity is a very big problem in the United States, and if we stop talking about it because it may hurt some peoples feelings, it will continue to be. Only you know for sure if you have a true medical condition that causes you to be overweight or not, only you can do something if you are overweight, and only you can make people feel sorry for you and prevent the problem from being addressed. If any of this trikes a chord, then you should ask yourself why.

"Obesity, however, has many causes. The reasons for the imbalance between calorie intake and consumption vary by individual. Your age, sex, and genes, psychological makeup, and environmental factors all may contribute. "

"
ScienceDaily (May 1, 2006) — The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. states has been greatly underestimated. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) analyzed data from health surveys, which are used to estimate obesity levels in states. Because people tend to provide incorrect information about their weight and height, especially in telephone surveys, the researchers concluded that estimates of obesity in individual states have been too low, by more than 50%. Their study, which corrects for misreporting in those surveys, appears in the May 2006 issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. :

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/fit.nation/obesity.map/

"Adult obesity is becoming more common in 31 states in the USA, according to a report "F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America, 2007 report from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH)". According to the report, not one single state was able to report a fall in obesity rates for the year 2006 - twenty two states experienced a second consecutive year increase. "

May I suggest email among a select group and not a public forum then.

Orion,
i believe i have stated on this thread, repeatedly, and elsewhere that my weight is in fact a direct result of the doctor's lack of acting in my best interest by not placing me on a medication to correct the fact that they had removed my thyroid.... i'm offended by the accusation that it's simply a matter of gluttony or laziness on my part... Mostly because yes, in addition to not having a thyroid i also have a metabolic disorder...Which means, that despite the fact that i eat half (if even that) what my room mate does (who's a size 2) and work out twice as much as she does i don't lose any weight....
Furthermore, i don't believe i asked for an "honest opinion" of Your assesment of my values or worth as a human being...i believe my question was more about why are we as a society obsessed with weight......
Kali

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 5:16:00 PM)

Then the short answer is "Because Obesity is an epidemic that is costing more than 200,000 lives a year."

This confuses me.  I thought if you weren't put on medication after thyroid removal that you are tired all of the time?  Did your doctor not notice this was going on with you?  Not to mention the weight issues.

Orion, in theory i agree with You...Perhaps if just once one of these "coversations" were of  a constructive nature, instead of bashing people because of a number on a scale.. i guess i fail to see how making bullshit comments about how people who are fat shouldn't go to ______ (fill in the blank) places... The beach, a restaruant, a buffet, etc. etc. etc.

Only you know for sure if you have a true medical condition that causes you to be overweight or not, only you can do something if you are overweight, and only you can make people feel sorry for you and prevent the problem from being addressed.

hmmm...Let me see? yep, i do know for sure what i take into my body in a day, i know what activity i put out in a day, and i know what my medical conditions are and aren't.... i don't think i've ever ONCE asked, hinted, or manipulated anyone into feeling sorry for me. And frankly i resent the implication that i've done anything in my life but address this problem.  Reality is Your just a pixel on a screen to me...Nothing more...Nothing less...However, i will tell You that i have one friend who posts on these boards who has seen what i've consumed in an average week...

If any of this trikes a chord, then you should ask yourself why.

Nope, actually what it strikes is far from a cord.

Katy, yeah You are right.... Tiredness, hairloss, lack of energy are all signs of hypothyroidism...However after what my body had been through during the hyperthyroidism they thought it was just a reaction...Then they decided i was depressed..It wasn't until i saw a psychiatrist who called my doctor and 'suggested' he put me on a replacement hormone that this was addressed.

KatyLied -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 5:27:55 PM)

I have to tell you that I am surprised a doctor would remove your thyroid and not prepare you for what would happen and put you on medication.  Whoa.

Kalista07 -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 5:30:28 PM)

Katy,
See i still don't know exactly what happened....i was seeing an endocronologist who just "up and moved out of town" during my thyroidectomy....It's never sat really well with me frankly....The only reason i even know now, is because i called his office two weeks or something after my surgery and was told by someone else in his office.
And in his defense, things were getting pretty scarey at that point and i think he just wanted to make sure i lived through the surgery..

Yes. WE can be where ever we like, weather you think we should be there or not.

Facts are facts, and when I was overweight I had to face them as well.

And did you have to face any other issues besides your weight like stretched skin hanging off your body? No amount of exercise and dieting can get rid of that and the person often looks worse after losing the weight. If someone has a medical condition that causes the weight gain, sometimes they have gained weight to the point where they will have excess skin by the time the problem is corrected, if it can be. What about women that end up with alot of amniotic fluid during pregnancy (which isn't even related to gluttony) or women that were pregnant with twins? I would advise anyone in this situation not to even worry about their weight until they have thousands of dollars to get all the excess skin removed.

pineapplesub -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 5:45:51 PM)

All right.  This thread has dragged me in, so I simply must comment.

I'm fat.  Obese, zaftig, rubenesque, overweight, chubby, pleasantly plump, call it what you like.  I don't care.  It doesn't bother me for the most part. Sometimes it bothers me is when I can't keep up with the sports I'd like to play.  I'm not fat because I have a thyroid issue; just didn't have the knowledge to eat healthy until recently.  And I still don't do it 100% of the time.  But you can't tell me that all people who are "fit" and "thin" eat well.

Several people have mentioned that exercise is free, and you rarely see fat people taking advantage of walking/biking/etc.  But it's really hard when you are self conscious to exercise in front of people.  When I go to the gym I feel extremely uncomfortable, because I'm the only fat person there sometimes.  Makes a person feel very self-conscious.  At least (since I don't want to speak for anyone else), it makes this person very self-conscious.

Has anyone on here seen "A Fat Rant" by Joy Nash?  Wonderfully done.

Kalista07 -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 5:52:28 PM)

pineapplesub,
i understand exactly where You are coming from....i am not yet confident enough to go to a gym, although i am getting there....However, a couple of years ago a friend of mine recommended i get these leslie sansone walk to fitness videos and they rock!! Hell, i secretly think that's the reason i had not problem walking up this steep 40 foot ravine in the snow the other day when i crashed my car..heh.

cc79257 -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 5:53:47 PM)

pineapplesub -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 6:02:04 PM)

lol  Like I said... some people in the "healthy weight" range have all the luck, cc.

And I've heard a lot of good thing about the Leslie walking videos, but I walk all over campus.  Can't stomach the thought of walking even more INSIDE of my dorm room.  I like scenery too much.

MzMia -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 6:04:44 PM)

I love fat threads.
They always seem to go at least 15 pages,
this one might last a few more days.

Kalista07 -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 6:07:41 PM)

Daddysredhead -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 6:09:18 PM)

I'm a fat chick.  I'd like to be a bit smaller.  Wasn't always a chubby.  After I had Thing 2, I lost the weight I had gained, but within several weeks, gained it back and then some.  I went to the doctor and had a comprehensive physical, including the blood work that told them what was wrong.  I had developed post-partum hypothyroidism.  After having Thing 2, my thyroid just crashed.  I take synthroid now to keep me from crashing, but weight control will always be more of a chore than it ever was prior to Thing 2.

My doctor was stunned at how high my TSH was when I initially got tested.  Normal TSH should be between 0.4 and 5.5, I believe.  Mine was 170.1.  Everyone was shocked that I wasn't in a coma or something.  I said, "I didn't know anything was THAT wrong.  I just had a kid who doesn't sleep much, has the days and nights mixed up, have a toddler running around, and have company from overseas living with us for a few months.  I just thought I was tired."  [:o]

The good thing is that no matter what weight I have been, whether a twig or a "squishy mommy" (as the Things like to call me, lol), I have always had friends and family who love me, think I'm smart and funny, and try to make sure that I know that I have value.  The one person who used to torment me for my weight, well, there's a reason he's my EX-husband.  Nothing like being called a 'fat cow' everyday to make you want to kick them to the curb.  (esp, when he was a 'chubby hubby' - I always used to tell him that he was still handsome to me.)  Thank goodness for people like Daddy who enjoy a gal with a nice rack and a generously padded, spankable booty.  [:)]
