fr--

IMHO you can tell the people who really haven't had to deal with weight issues on a long term basis. i swear i was born fat. i've been struggling with it my entire life. and yes i try to eat well, and exercise, and whatnot. i'm also on meds that affect my metabolism. the 'you're just lazy' argument, seems to me, to be just as lazy. it's easy to say oh well there must be something wrong with that person so i'm okay with pitying them or making fun of them or patronizing them in an attemp to 'help' them realize 'their problem'.

honestly the thing that makes me laugh are these people who go GEEZ FLUFFY DO YOU REALLY NEED THAT DOUGHNUT YOU CAN STAND TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS. naw really? it's not like i've yet to encounter a mirror. i never noticed. sometimes i turn around and go you know it's funny you could stand to keep your mouth shut every once in awhile and mind your business.

that being said, i'm actually at my heaviest now and am actually happier now than i ever was when i was 'average'. this is my base weight--this is where i plateu when i stop dieting or exercising and i've pretty much stayed here, plus or minus a few pounds. i'm getting much more attention from both men and women and am much more confident. someone told me it's because i look like an amazon and act like a bitch, and it scares some and enthralls others. shrug.

i think though that it works both ways which is something that we do tend to overlook. my best friend is a size zero, and about once a week she tells me that she would much rather be an 18 like me because i at least look like an adult. she hates her body and wishes she was heavier because people notice her for anything other than her weight.

Popeye, i wonder if it's ever occured to You that people are not doing these things in front of You because You are, in fact, a judgmental jackass....i mean seriously, i understand these are Your beliefs and nothing i say or do is going to change them, but it might just be time to get a clue...

When I go to the Chinese all you can eat buffet I always see fat people.
Maybe they go down to the beach and jog it off unbeknownst to me.
One thing though, should you really be at an all you can eat buffet if you're overweight by that much?

No....No...You are right, we shouldn't....In fact, i appoint You the all holy great grand puba of measurements to determine who is and is not appropriate to do what.....

It's like seeing an alcoholic in a bar room.
And they'll argue with you all night long that they're not alcoholic. ("Filler up Joe")
And, I wasn't making a "judgement" about fat people I was just making an *observation* about when I go walking or bike riding or to the gym, all places where the odds of seeing fat people are much less than the Chinese all you can eat buffet.
If you're overweight you're not a "victim." You need to make some choices and decisions like an alcoholic does. "But I have a "medical condition"; so do alcoholics, deal with it.
You continue that behaviour of drinking (or eating) and you'll die sooner than you should.
I don't see a lot of drunks out walking biking or at the gym either.
But if I were to go into the dew drop in I know I would.
Just an observation, I'm not judging them either.

i might not be a victim, but at the same time if this is the attitude by 'non judgemental' individuals why do i want to go someplace where i might have to deal with 'judgemental' individuals?

i think i find your analagy more than slightly problematic for a variety of reasons but that's a whole other thread.

Whip?  Did someone say whip??

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 6:44:29 PM)

There are things a person can do to keep from getting worse in the mean time. I do not believe someone should throw up their hands and say shit I give up let me get even MORE heavier than I am already. It don't serve any purpose, except to make the work THAT much HARDER once you do have money to do something about it.

So instead of giving up an throwing your hands in the air, how about focusing on being healthy, and making right descions, so you're happy. So you don't gain any more weight and compound a problem.

I would advise anyone in this situation not to even worry about their weight until they have thousands of dollars to get all the excess skin removed.

Yes, the fat asses, as one poster has called all fat people, tend to have a quite spankable butt. and hey it's hard to miss, so none of this swatting an hitting a hip bone or something you didn't intend to hit:P

LilMinxy1 -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 6:53:26 PM)

I personally have begun to wonder what the psychology is behind those who just cant seem to loose or keep the weight off.  I mean, past the comfort food issue.
Ive spent my whole life battling my weight.  Ive fought, and still fight bulemia (a daily battle for the rest of my life) and still I cant maintain weight.  Im always gaining, which means I have to switch in to over drive to loose.  I work out every day, I eat pretty healthy.  The most unhealthy part of my meals is when I skip them.  I dont eat a lot of fried or fatty foods, stay away from too many carbs (not that I support a full on high protien low or almost no carb diet).
Because I do have an eating disorder (which is a disease like alcoholism) I have to be careful because its very easy to fall back in to jamming my finger down my throat.  Seems easy to do, except I really dont like loosing all my teeth and dont want to end up looking like I got MethMouth.

So, if I work out daily, and eat healthy, what could it be?  Is it my mind?  I mean I know Im derranged but damn!

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Why are we obsessed with weight? (2/7/2008 7:10:42 PM)

Excess skin is why it still looks like I have a slight roll. The stretch marks are still there. I can hike, exercise and do alot more now. I am at less risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc. I eat in moderation until I am no longer hungry (occasionally until full if it is a great meal). I drink plenty of water. I stay away from the sodas. I eat more fruits and veggies (though I could stand to eat more).

Your advice to not lose weight until you can do something about the cosmetics, shows that you only look at it from a cosmetic point. I am talking about being as healthy as you can be, and moderation. It seems that you just want to ignore a problem as a solution, and if you want you can, but to advise others to is dangerous.

You can come up with many reasons to not succeed, but the question is, how many reasons can you come up with to succeed?

Facts are facts, and when I was overweight I had to face them as well.

And did you have to face any other issues besides your weight like stretched skin hanging off your body? No amount of exercise and dieting can get rid of that and the person often looks worse after losing the weight. If someone has a medical condition that causes the weight gain, sometimes they have gained weight to the point where they will have excess skin by the time the problem is corrected, if it can be. What about women that end up with alot of amniotic fluid during pregnancy (which isn't even related to gluttony) or women that were pregnant with twins? I would advise anyone in this situation not to even worry about their weight until they have thousands of dollars to get all the excess skin removed.

Orion,
i've given Your post a great deal of thought.. Despite the antagonistic approach i do get what You are saying...One time last year i watched Oprah...i was so freaking livid afterwards, because here were all these 400 -600 pound people (previously) on there who would indulge in behaviors such as buying a whole wedding cake and eating it, etc. etc. etc. The thing that i must confess pissed me off the most  was the fact that once they stopped eating this way, they lost weight...And then they began to work out some... Some!!! WTF!!!??  It was at that point that He and i agreed i needed to get rid of the scale completly.....
Honestly Orion, i can not come up with any freaking reasons not to succeed...But, i can come up with plenty to succeed...However, here's the deal for me...What's Your definition of success? Because mine (currently...subject to change moment by moment) is to feel okay inside my own skin... To be able to walk a couple miles without losing my breath and to be able to have a respectful (not fearful) relationship with food...
Could just be me though

Popeye, correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the goal of most alcoholics some kind of abstinence? (Be it sobriety, recovery, not drinking, etc?) Can You explain to me in Your infinite wisdom how the hell that would even work with food? Because i'll tell ya the truth...Those 12 days that i didn't eat anything i was working out...i walked two and a half miles every evening and i worked out for two hours in the morning at the gym...The end of those 12 days? i gained 10 or 15 pounds..

That sounds pretty damn successful to me:)

Check this Scientific American article out, it has a lot of data about the impact of obesity:

Really?

"Overweight is a serious health concern for children and adolescents. Data from two NHANES surveys (1976–1980 and 2003–2004) show that the prevalence of overweight is increasing: for children aged 2–5 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 13.9%; for those aged 6–11 years, prevalence increased from 6.5% to 18.8%; and for those aged 12–19 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 17.4%. However, since we, as a country have collectively gotten progressively lazier and more fast-food inclined, the number of larger people is growing astromically.

The so-called "obesity epidemic" leveled off in 2000.  Too bad so few have looked at the stats in the last 7 years or so.
