OmegaG - dont get me wrong, Bush has the right to say who he'd prefer and why. Its the part about using the power of the presidency in doing so which concerned me. Yes, he's president but the presidency and the president are two distinct (though obviously related) things surely? Its not quite, but it has the taste of an abuse of position for him to use the office to comment, rather than him to comment and happen to be the president.

Ellen, perhaps it would help if you looked at the "star" vs. the "star power".  Many well known people (particularly our hollywood set) stand on platforms all the time, both political, social and economical.  What is the difference between Bush encouraging "republicans" to vote for the chosen candidate,  Oprah touting Barak or Teddy publically (along with Caroline) endorsing Hillary?  Being President, Bush would, as has always been in either party, endorse the next party nominee.  He cannot tell people how to vote, he probably doesn't have all that much influence with many right now, and I do think that he should probably keep his mouth shut as it could work against the candidate.
I may well have voted for John McCain in 2000.  But I cannot and will not now.  The last 8 years have shown a real shift in his leanings and I do not like what he has represented and who has has chosen to buddy up with.   I do not consider him (or Bush) a conservative in the original sense of the word.  Republican means nothing to Me anymore.
I wondered at the sudden downfall of McCain in the 2000 primary run.  To this day I am not sure that a quiet deal was not made, i.e.:   "Bush in 2000 and the party will give it over to McCain in 2008".  I remember several months ago when McCain was lagging so badly, he had no money and was flying commerical on Southwest.  Suddenly he is the man of the hour.
Almost 2 years ago I said My worst nightmare would be a Clinton/McCain ticket.  My nightmare is coming true.

Mr. Bush’s remarks, delivered in an early morning speech to the Conservative Political Action Committee, presaged the role his aides said he would play all year: using the power of the presidency to shape the agenda and attack his Democratic critics.

OK. Its nothing to do with me - but I find that a bit disturbing that he's going to use the power of the presidency to interfere with the election of his successor.

And anyway, I'd have thought he had much else to occupy his time and efforts

Presidents have been doing that since George Washington. It is part and parcel of our political process.

well bush isn't doing any more than bill clinton is doing, is he?  throwing his endorsement behind a candidate of his political party?  the real question is if the influence of either man will work for or against their chosen candidates.
