Dodge brings back another of their former muscle cars.

quote:

Back in 1974, amid new safety regulations and the dawn of unleaded fuel in the U.S., Dodge ended production of its V8-powered Challenger. Thirty-four years later, here in Chicago, Dodge has brought back the Challenger with a vehicle worthy of the name.

Jim Press, vice chairman and president of Chrysler LLC, introduced the Challenger by pointing out that the original 1970 Challenger sold for about $3,000 – these models are going for $100,000 at auction 38 years later. Based on that, Press surmised that this new Challenger should be worth about $20 million in 40 years. We’ll have to wait and see on that claim.

With little change from the concept car introduced in Detroit two years ago, the new Challenger SRT8 carries through many of the styling cues found on that original 1970s model. And just like that original, the new Challenger SRT8 boasts V8 power and rear-wheel drive.

The 1974 Challenger’s V8 produced 245 horsepower; in comparison the 2009 Challenger SRT8 touts a 6.1-liter V8 that commands 425 horses. This big V8 has the highest output of any normally aspirated V8 engine ever offered by Chrysler. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission.

I'm not usually a big fan of car companies trying to bring back a classic, nor am I a fan of car companies trying to add a modern flair to past designs.  The most recent failure, to me, was the newly designed Mustang.  To me, those things are ugly as shit.

The Challenger, however, looks really wicked!  I love it and I'm not even a fan of the Dodge line.  It managed to keep a lot of the classic lines without too much intrusion from modern influence.  With a whopping 425 HP under the hood, I wonder if it managed to keep that mean, muscle car rumble, too.

I wonder if Chevy is ever going to bring back the Chevelle.  Just curious.

2 Wheels too many, Although having too much torque and not enough traction in a RWD car can be really fun on the track and street.

agreed!

I had a couple of them 71's that is the prettiest one they made and i also had 1 71 cuda.

there was about a 4 year span where the nicest looking muscle cars they ever made came out.

popeye1250 -> RE: 2009 Dodge Challenger (2/8/2008 4:55:35 PM)

Nice! I had a '74 Plymouth "Sebring" with a 318 c.i. engine that went pretty good after I got out of the Navy.

Aneirin -> RE: 2009 Dodge Challenger (2/8/2008 5:08:57 PM)

Hey, I have always loved American cars from the 60's and 70's, my first metallic love was a Camarro, a lovely design. I never got one as fuel consumption was a moot point here in Britain and I was skint. I did however manage a Mk 3 Cortina, which I believe was loosely based upon an American muscle car in body shape.Then came the Mk 1 Toyota Celica 1600 ST. All cars to me that are art to the eye.

You have to remember, ' Yank Tanks' are relatively rare in the UK, but there were a few that to me were the opitome of beauty in mobile practical art. These include 60's Corvette, Camarro, Charger and the good ole Trans Am , made famous my the film ' Smokey and the Bandit'.I was an engineer, and the V8  was of interest, such power from such a compact unit.

Neither of them practical for the tiny Uk and it's Tiny roads and now anything near two litre capacity and one is regarded as a gas guzzler. You in the US have the wide open spaces, the long roads and significantly  cheaper fuel than us, at times I was jealous of you.

Sometimes, all you have to do, is drive.  (and I miss it, currently carless, after I sold my focus)

we had those around here too, one R only; please.

The old torpedo back Jag-u-ars? I bet you have them in graveyards like the debt. Here is a no go. Mercedes 230-280SL............cum, cum, cum.

That shit is the bomb.

Same here, I never cared a great deal for the Mopars, I've always loved GM product, but the Challenger, it's nice. Very nice.

I don't know if we'll ever see another Chevelle, but I do believe they'll roll out a new Camaro in the next 3 years..... they seem to be leaning towards a retro 1969 look.

Aneirin -> RE: 2009 Dodge Challenger (2/8/2008 5:24:21 PM)

Rx-7'S were good for a small car, and if we are talking Mazda, their engines were a break through. The Wankel design, based upon an aero engine was in theory, more power to fuel ratio, but in reality, were a maintenance nightmare, it's savings in fuel were offset by it's time in the shop for maintenance.

I was just thinking about the reintroduction of the ' Dodge Challenger', it being a former muscle car, how long will it be before a manufacturer will offer for sale something which is totally enviromentally unfriendly.

What's that in Robocop, a , something SUX ?

No, but I would like to, I know it has a Dodge in it [X(]

popeye1250 -> RE: 2009 Dodge Challenger (2/8/2008 11:46:41 PM)

Dodge always made very nice cars!
And their styling was ahead of the curve too.
Growing up I knew a guy who had a 1958 Dodge "Coronet"  "Monarch" maybe, not sure about the model but it had a 392 Hemi in it and was a big 4 door "boat" probably weighed 5,000 pounds but when he buryied the pedal that sucker would absolutely smoke the back tires and went like a raped ape engine screaming!
It must have had 400 horse power. It would beat most cars around then.
It would easily seat 6 people.

Politesub53 -> RE: 2009 Dodge Challenger (2/9/2008 3:52:41 AM)

I could never make my mind whether i prefered the Charger over the Challenger. Like Aneirin i loved the Camaro Z 28s, and was lucky enough to own a mk1 Celica. There were a few decent British cars about at that time, such as the Cortina Lotus, and later the Mk 11 Cortina savage, built at Crayford Cortinas with a 3000 V6 engine. As well as this we had the Rover V8s and the slab sided Humberhawk.

Fast reply

I have a 07 SRT8 Charger and I have a deposit on a 09 Challenger.
