Status: offline 		When I went to Holland, I spent a day wandering around, and had the joy of going to the Rijksmuseum..wow.  SO many paintings I had seen in photos,,but the impact of seeing them in person was AMAZING.

A side note:  Modern art encompasses any genre or creation since about the mid 1600s until the present time, and therefore would include surrealism or any other movement.  Anything being created now  (or recently) would be considered Contemporary.

I majored in art history and worked in a gallery for years.  One thing I gleaned from that experience was any attempt to define what art is was an exercise in futility.  The most common response from people witnessing something new or a piece that did not appeal to them was, "Wow, I could have made that!  You call that 'art'?". 

We strive to define what art is, but in the end, we can only define what it means to ourselves.  Labels since the dawn of time, i.e. Surrealism, Art Nouveau, Medieval, etc, help us put words on something that is totally subjective and help satisfy our need for a common definition and succinct communication.

Status: offline 		I'm with you, there, though the queues are off-putting.  When you're next there, check out the Stejdelijk, which is the Dutch equivalent of our Tate or your MOMI.  They have quite a bit on Carl Andre - yeah, the "bricks" guy!  Give it a chance, conceptual art is not quite as portayed. aha. ahaha. ahahahah.

I used to study photography and saw examples of what people had done playing with the open shutter. Certain double exposures can raise an eyebrow as well.

At work there is a replica of a sailboat made of beer cans.

In some of those highly coveted old houses there is finely detailed wood trim, the kind that people strip all the paint off and restore.

Are these actually art ?

This topic does come with the extra large can of worms. Say you have a tatoo of a riverbed with a beautiful Woman and a dog. Perhaps a rolling waterfall in the background. Or you can have a tatoo that simply says "Rosie".

A country's currency can be considered art. All it has to say on it is "Dis here's a dollar", yet they go to great lengths. Of course make it hard to copy, but they do have aesthetics in mind.

And then we have computers. I plan to go into business, in Harvard Graphics I made a nice little logo for the company. The program yielded me a seven sided polygram which I used in another program to draw a seven sided star that is nearly geometrically perfect. The company name is printed circularly around the logo, like on a coin.

So where does that stand as art ? It is indeed designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but it is for the purpose of giving a positive impression of the company to increase sales. So is it art or not ?

Can anyone say ?

I guess the computer is your paintbrush, your chisel....and I don't know if the reason you created it -- company logo --  matters.  The fact remains, it's your creation.  And IMO, that's enough for it to be considered a work of art. YMMV

of course, I'm not an art 'scholar' so I could be wrong.

Everything about Dali defied containment by labels, but both he and surrealism are very much part of Modern Art.

Yeah thats why I said some surealism.... him I like. I used to spend quality hours staring at (and protecting) his art work. About 14 years ago when I last lived up here I had a side gig as one of the "upscale guards" that stand behind the ropes and keep people from being stuipid. It was a niffy job.

How many folks know he did jewlery pieces unless you go to the museum...

I wish I had the chance to go to Dali in Focus while it was running. *sighs* that looked interesting.

Sure Greedy.. Let's pick a weekend and go. We can do lunch first.. and then go to the museum. Art is always better on a full stomach. Give me a call or e-mail me. *smiles*

I want to spend a whole day in La Louvre... maybe 2... none of this in and out business... that is why tour groups suck.. but at least you dont get lost on the Metro... *winks at Greedy*

All art by it's own turn is "honest" in it's own fashion... but I think that Photojournalism is an up to date and even moment by moment expression of what we see around us that can not hide it's honesty. It makes you stop and think.. or if you can not.. it makes you look away. But at least you are painfuly aware of what is going on. For the good or for the bad.

What do you guys think?
